Magic Kingdom update 10.22.13

Thank you for the update! I think kids will love the new ride....I hope they have a way to make sure they keep their arms and legs inside. When I worked at BTM I once saw a tennager with their leg outside as the train came into the station...I swear if they had not lifted it back inside at the last moment, they would have lost the foot!!!!

Is Q1 2014 the 1stQ of the FY that started 10/1?

EDIT: Meaning Q2 of the Fiscal Year or Q2 of the calendar year?

Fiscal Q2, Jan-Mar 2014.

The reason it is scheduled to take so long to complete has nothing to do with them worried about "everything going smoothly" because they "rushed the project".
The reasons are:
Spaced out openings. This will be the ONLY new attraction opening in 2014 in all of WDW. If it were to open in 2013, they'd have nothing new to open for next year. They had Princess Fairytale Hall for 2013.
Budgets. By pushing it back to 2014, they're able spread out the costs over multiple years.
Costs. The longer a construction project timeline, the less it costs. Construction companies charge less if there isn't a push for a quick opening and the slower progress means fewer man hours.

The project was originally supposedly delayed because it was a late addition due to the swap from Cinderella's Chateau. They started construction only a few months after the rest of the FLE, so there's no reason to think plans weren't ready to go by then (meaning at most, it should have opened only 3-6 months after the rest of the FLE).

The last part is incorrect. The Mine Ride started construction 20 months after the rest of the expansion. Everything else start in February of 2010, there was no evidence of mine ride construction until October of 2011. The Mine Ride wasn't even announced until January of 2011.

20 months? I don't remember that, but I guess it's plausible. Refresh my memory. Did they clear the land and then just let it sit for almost two years? I really don't remember that being the case. It seemed like they cleared the land and then began with the foundation work about six months after beginning BATB and TLM.

So, I'm going back a little here and looking at the photo galleries:
http://www.wdwmagic.com/attractions/fantasyland/news.htm

From what I can tell.
The expansion was confirmed on 9/12/2009
6/14/2010 you can see them starting to clear out all the trees from the area
7/9/2010 shows foundation being poured for TLM
1/18/2011 is the news that confirms the mine train as part of the expansion
8/8/2011 they start digging holes in the general vicinity of the mine train
10/3/2011 the first foundation for the mine train is visible.

So it all depends on when you consider things starting in regards to the mine train. Between announcement and first work on it is about 7 months. I'ts a full 14 months or so from the beginning of the construction of FLE, and nearly 2 years from when the expansion was announced.

Construction walls went up in Feb of 2010.

Here is a picture from July 2011 showing that the area where the mine ride will be is just being used for parking and materials

Here is October, 2011 where you can just begin to see the excavation for the mine ride.

So though the time line is a snail's pace and everyone would like everything a little faster, bottom line is, as much as we dislike the slow pace, it's on schedule. Certainly the schedule is driven by financial motivators, budgets, quarterly financial statements et al, but on schedule none-the-less.

You know.. what happened to the rides always dumping you out into the tiny little shop? They don't seem to do it a lot anymore. Only if it was existing. Crazy

I can tell you that construction on dwaves is about 3 weeks ahead of schedule... There are 2 reason for that... Firstly, there were 2 weeks of extra time planned over the summer to compensate for weather events (There were no tropical impacts in Florida this season) and secondly, they are ahead of schedule by about a week..

All-in-all acceptance testing is expected in mid-December... Expect the first trains to travel the track under their own power within 3 weeks or so...

it took 13 months to build the Eiffel Tower....It took less time to build an entire DVC resort building from bare ground to open and receiving guests...The amount of time spent on this ride is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, but those things actually make MONEY...this is just an add-on to a ticket that you have already paid for!!! So for the Wall Street suits bunch that are at the reins...it is a totally different priority - namely LOW !!!

Oh yes, they are absolutely FLYING now! (that's sarcasm, btw)
They are actually lol, compare the photos in early october to where we are now the entire front being covered, them starting on cementing it as well, the back moving in quick succession most of the minor details are stating to show up everywhere. Everyone here knows this thing has been moving terribly slow, but in the past month it honestly has started to move much quicker.

DJKIDKAZ thanks so much for these updates. I really appreciate them as they cover a lot.

For those of us that can't get there very often these really satisfy the need to know everything going on at WDW.

The dolls they released this year, as well as the few stuffed animals, are pretty high quality. They're nearly like having a AA from the ride home with you. I nearly had a heart attack when I ran into the display at the Disney Store. The store displays even have a small blurb about Mary Blair. Quite well done. I know my kids love them

(and so do I, having a hard time not collecting all of them)
The dolls are adorable. Do you remember the cost?
