Hey all, I was just wondering if anyone here has ever seen or participated in the daily flag retreat in Magic Kingdom. I've been there so many times but never seen it done.

I'm taking my boyfriend's parents over next Monday and his dad is a Vietnam vet and we were thinking of seeing if he wanted to do this. It would definately be a neat experience for him to take back home and tell everyone he was the veteran of the day at Disney! :)

We saw it once during our trip last December, and it was a very touching and memorable ceremony.

I put a few pics of the ceremony in the Photo Album section a month or so ago, here's the links:

Flag ceremony, facing flag-pole.

Flag ceremony, facing gathered cast-members.

Flag ceremony, child in audience.

It is a simple touching ceremony that too many people overlook.
When you enter the park, check either the daily events schedule or at City Hall for time.

There is also a guest that assists every day, so you may also want to check in City Hall as to how that person is selected or if possible you could nominate your boyfriends Dad.

Is there ever a live band for this, these days? I remember back probably 15 years ago there was a 20-or-so piece marching band that assembled in the square and played about a 15 minute program of period pieces and patriotic music before the actual flag retreat.

The last time I saw it was about a year or so ago and there was a small band maybe 10, don't recall exactly how many in the band.

I've seen it in the past -- the 1980s and 1990s -- when I was with my family. Back then I did not understand, but now that I am a long-time military member, it has meaning.

I have partipated/shown respect during numerous retreats and revelries in my day, and some day soon look forward to a retreat inside the Magic Kingdom.

It takes place at 5:00 every day. I've seen it probably hundereds of times. Most Main Street CMs are there along with any other CM in the area and everything around there kinda stops while it happens. Normally the Main Street Philharmonic is there to play for it but when they aren't there is a recording of them. It's a very nice ceremony that I tried to make sure I was always around for.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I called guest services and got his Dad confirmed for next Monday. I can't wait, I'm sure he'll just love it, now lets just hope that Wilma gets outta the way by Monday so the weather will be nice.

That's great to hear! :sohappy:

I'm surprised something like that doesn't book up faster, since you're less than a week out, and it only happens once each day!

Wow I need to check that out when my fiance and I go in Dec. My fiance just got back in March from Iraq maybe he can be the vet of the day? What number did you call?
