Ride Design for Maelstrom was an Experiment.
The ride has a movie at the end.... unlike ANY other disney ride. Its the first and last time they made it that way.
People dont want to stay for i... and they have to let people walk through the theatre.

Also in the ride, there are garments from past cast members.... not many.. but a few.. You won't find them.. (they hid them) but.... its there....

The polar bear in Maelstrom is the most expensive object in the ride... and you only see it for a few seconds..... its used to be faster, and when the ride opened. Eisner supp. have siad..... (oh..my... i dont know if that was really worth it)

I think the movie at the end was an exception for World Showcase.

How did you find out about the kidden garments? Where are they?

I dont get what eisner said about the polar bear.

The attraction was also to have a real lightning effect but was scrapped. I don't think electricity, water a guests mix too well.

The ride is entirely too short of a ride, but a good concept. The rain/wind scenes are my favorite, I just wish the ride was immensely longer. That and El Rio leave a little more to be had.

Maelstrom Lightning

Maelstrom did (does) have a lightning effect. In the North sea as you splash down you first get the strobe fx, then there is lightning way up to the left of the oil rig. I read about the ride tech so decided to look for it on my 2001 DV tape, and there it is! Its not as bright as you would think from a van der graph generator (?) but I guess they didn`t want to illuminate the ceiling.

I've looked for it but never saw it. If it IS there, it looks nothing like what it was desined to look like. Take a look at a photo from the Imagineering book. The caption for the photo says:

"Above: A powerful Tesla coil being developed for the Maelstrom attraction in the Norway pavillion at World Showcase shoots giant bolts of electricity within a few feet of these very brave imagineering volunteers."

If this were the actual effect, I think I would have to change my pants!
