If they saw closing on April 10th does that mean the last day to ride is April 9th? I really hope not because I arrive April 10th and the teacups are one of my favorites :(

It will most likely be closed when you get there

Well that's not good. :( I don't get to go very often so its very hard for me to easily act like not going on a favorite isn't a big deal. Do you think there is any way that I would have a chance of going on it? Maybe a late start or something. Either way thanks for clearing it up for me I appreciate it.

Anybody else could do it in that time frame, but this is Disney we're talking about here ;)

All joking aside, I also wonder why they would be doing it again since it was just done in 2010. I do remember reading a rumor that the 2010 job was temporary, but that just seems odd to go through all of the work of stripping the roof down to the frame, putting on a temporary roof, just to redo the whole thing a few years later. Either way, if the rumor of the temporary roof is true, or if it was just a shoddy job, I have to agree with you. Why not just do it the first time?

Maybe someone else will be able to shed some more light on the subject.

At the time it was speculated that the 2010 work was an emergency patch job because it closed suddenly with no warning or pre-scheduled closure to have the roof stripped down and replaced. Theory was that some kind of refurbishment/redecoration of the roof was planned, but then they discovered something that had to be taken care of right then and they weren't ready to do the planned roof at that point. So, they did as minimal work as they could get away with to get them through to the full refurb.

My speculation has been that the roof we see now is the under-layer of the final roof, and that some kind of pre-fabricated roof will be brought in an installed on top of it. (That pre-fabricated roof will have to be sealed, hence the contractor hired with experience in roof sealing)

YES!

This ride needs it, badly!

Although, rumor has it that Fantasyland management wants the giant teapot in the center removed from the ride and Fastpass will be installed soon.

The Teacups are awesome! One of my must-do's. It may be a simple ride, but I've got so many, so very old, memories of it! No need to be ashamed - I too would consider it a big deal if I found them under refurbishment. :(

Thanks for the info, Rob! Two roof refurbs in such a short span of time seemed odd so I guess this makes sense.

Any speculation regarding the look of the final roof? I always thought the roof depicted in the New Fantasyland artwork looked nice but wondered if that was actually part of the final plan or just an artistic liberty.

It would help "old fantasyland" look new! :)

Agreed. they also could work on the chinsy looking fascia that is over through the area by IASW. That looks so cheap compared to the rest of FL, and especially bad next to New FL. Time to put the scrims up and go to work on that part!

Permit filled today for Mad Tea Party refurbishment. The contractor, Shield Coatings & Weatherproofing, Inc, does weatherproofing works especially for roofs. Also of note is the expiration date, 7/17/2013.

Section: 11 Township: 24 Range: 27 Mk Mad Tea Party -

The sub-contractor also does, "sealing and glazing of windows", seems like they might be the ones to call if they were thinking about a glass roof and protecting it from the element in Florida. If the roof required several coats of a sealer, they might have to come back weeks, or months, later to apply an additional coat.

I'm just hazarding a guess, but I remember looking at photos a while ago (I might be wrong), but it looked like they didn't remove the wood part of the roof, which may have had dry rot. If so, they might have been able to get away with just putting a "temporary" type covering over the wood. (I think this is what they did).

Could be a good sign for a glass roof as it makes sense to *not* replace the wood if the whole thing will be glass/metal in a couple years.

If they were going to replace the wood and be done with it, it would have been so much less expensive in the long run to simply remove the wood during the last refurb, put up some new wood, and put on the permanent roof. They could even have just a temp roof if they didn't want to go permanent, over the new wood.

Not a big deal $ wise for Disney, though I guess they look at every penny. Probably would just take a roofing crew a day or so, to install new wood rafters.

I think the double refurb is a result of indecision/plans for a glass roof. If they don't do a glass roof, then they are just doing what they should have done last time, IMHO.

They stripped the whole roof, and put new shingles on, which most have a 30 year warranty, so why waste the time and money just to redo it? It better be something amazing, not just throwing some thatch over the current roof. Know wonder prices have gone up. We keep going because we love the place, but dont raise prices just for your stupid planning and mistakes

Yes, they stripped the old roof but they never added shingles. It's just a big metal roof painted green.
