Luggage Weight Limit?

Someone told me that airlines have a limit of only 2 check in and one carry on per person and the check in can only weigh less then 50lbs or it will cost $$$? Is this true, cause I never heard of such a thing?

MaXXimus, nice to meet you (you're from my neck of the woods - I work in New Castle).

Where are you flying out of - New Castle, BWI, Philly or AC? The reason I ask is because, like many others have said, it depends on the airport and the airline. For instance, Spirit (out of AC) is who I will be flying in October. They only allow one bag and it must be within the 50 lbs weight limit. Now, if you are flying out of New Castle, I am almost positive they will limit your baggage as the plane is a lot smaller than the ones that fly out of the major airports.

Just call ahead to your airline and ask their limitations, that should help you. Also, Rob, that's an excellent suggestion - I think that having a digital scale on luggage is a novel concept!

Baggage weight also factors into the baggage handlers' jobs. They have to lift and haul the bags around. It may be that American Airlines in Orlando has had a rash of workers' comp injuries, and has started getting strict about baggage weight limits. (Because who wants to throw their back out heaving that 85-pound behemoth suitcase into the cargo hold because it was averaged with its' accompanying 5-pound tote?)

Well considering they are willing to accept the bag if you pay the extra money I doubt its because they care about their workers safety. I suspect its just another way the airline has found to make more money. Like charging for food on the plane.

this is what i was worried about too! not so much going down to fl, but coming back, with all the stuff we always end up buying. cant help it, i like to shop :) anyway, our flight down is only 2 hours, so i was going to bring a duffel for a carry-on, put a change of clothes in it, leave it mostly empty. that way, on the way home, we can just throw our souveniers into it and not have to worry about luggage being overweight. 2 bags each though, at 50 lbs, i dont think i can pack 100 lbs of clothes!!! especially for august in fl, shorts and tanks. 90 degree weather doesnt require much clothing, nor does a honeymoon... :lookaroun

We have always lived by the 'pack an extra bag' rule. DH and I usually check one large suitcase packed with one carry on size bag, and we have a small 'suitcase' that fits within the carry-on rules. We carry that as well as a tote with us. Then, if need be, we can check both the large and small suitcases on the way home, and carry on the tote and the pre-packed bag. Also, since my dad hates to check luggage when he flies, he has his carry-on bag and still has a 'personal item'; even though he doesn't have a laptop, he has a laptop sized bag that he stows extra bits and pieces in.

I've flown SW the last 4 years. A few occassions I've had suitcases marked heavy or overweight, but I've never been charged for it. The strangest is my neice, on the way down it was fine. On the way back, it was taped overweight. But she had the same thing in it. No souvenirs.
