Luggage Racks

I just got a new vehicle and it has a luggage rack on top. Technically, if I ever need to use it, I could probably just secure a suitcase or two up there, and then hope it doesn't rain all the way to where I'm going. So, probably the smarter thing would be to get one of those clamshell things that I see on top of vehicles all the time.

My questions are:

Where does on get those? How much do they cost? And do any of you just secure your luggage on top without one?

We have one that we bought at Sears many years ago - works out well. I think it's called an Escargo or something like that. I really don't remember what we paid for it, but I'm sure they're a lot more now. If you just put your luggage up there, you'll need to cover it snugly with some kind of tarp.

Cool. Maybe I'll call Sears in a little while and see if they carry those things. Not that I need one right now, since with only one child, we can just fold the other seats into the floor and have plenty of space in the van. But in the event we go on a trip with another couple or something, we may need to get one of those clamshell things.

They don't look like they really hold that much, though. Maybe they would look bigger if I stood right in front of one, but just driving by them on the interstate, it almost looks like you're doing good just to fit one suitcase in it. Do they really hold very much?

Ours holds quite a bit, and I know that my brother's family travels with luggage for 6 with plenty of room....Duffels work well with them!

Make sure the clamshell is attached properly and latched and locked or you'll lose all your stuff on the highway...seen it happen many times.

We thought about getting one for our upcoming trip. We decided we could get one of these instead

I think it will fit our needs better as well as it shouldn't lower our gas milage.
