Love Bugs - When?

Hi everyone. We leave in 9 days to go to WDW and I want to know if I should be concerned about love bug swarms? I have never experienced these little buggers (no pun intended) before and I am hearing conflicting opinions as to when they swarm and what they do. Can someone fill me in? Thanks a bunch:D

May and September are the typical months that they swarm in Florida but they can appear almost anytime between April and October. The May swarm is typically not as bad as September. The good news is that they do not bite, they do not spread any type of disease, they are simply a nuisance.

EDIT: We have also had a fairly wet year so the swarms will be pretty bad.

Thanks for the link...just read the entire thread and I think it may be hit or miss for us... In any case we will deal with it; after all we are going to our favorite vacation destination:sohappy:

I LOVE the love bugs, lol...
my sons love them too, unfortunately we are a very animal/bug friendly house, and there are invariably people who squash them... sad. They are fun to watch though, when the tourists run yelling and swatting thinking they bite.:ROFLOL::lol:

May and Sept, that makes sense why I saw them the last 2 trips I went on. We went in Sept for the first time and we had never seen them before, they are annoying but only mildly so. Then I went again in May and they were there again, I thought they were there all the time. I thought it was some new bug that had found Florida and decided to make it there new home. Looks like I will see them again when we are there in Sept!

Yeah, I have been seeing single love bugs around for the last week or so. Today, I saw a few with their mates attached, so that means they are really close to swarming. So frustrating having to hose off the cars everyday!

While we don't live in Florida, we were told by a castmember that they arrive in May and September. We were there two years ago from 9/25-10/1 and were really annoyed by these pesky little bugs. The castmember overheard us and explained to us what they were and when they come every year. I remember walking in MGM and them being so thick, they were in just about everything that we had with us. I even found them in our bags when we got home, talk about a souvenire.

May and September are the months when the lovebugs typically come out. They don't bite or sting, they're just a pain in the butt to be around. There are literally swarms of them and they will cover every outdoor surface. I hate bugs and they freak me out, even though they don't bite or sting; just the idea of being surrounded by creepy crawlies (creepy flyers?) is icky.

We were at WDW at the end on Sept. in 2006 and the bugs were so bad there were lots of dead ones around our hotel door (POR) and also inside. Last year we were there at the same time and they were not bad at all.

I was in Tampa last week, by the canal, and there were quite a few. (Did you know that when they hit a screened tent, and die, they stain it blue? ugh )Since it's a bit warmer there than here, I expect to see them any day now. :lookaroun

We were told that they are attracted to white, and that sure seemed to be true.

Especially since we took our white camper in September.

I live in Orlando and I'm starting to see them now, no large swarms, but they are out and about and annoying the fool out of me when I try to lay out by the pool.
