Huh? I guess you are falling for the myth that love bugs were created as an experiment at the U of F.
No, a "first world problem" is a phrase to mean something that only people in "first world" nations have to deal with. i.e. problems that really aren't true problems. A "first world problem" is like buying a cell phone and two weeks later a new model comes out whereas a "third world problem" is dying from malaria from a mosquito bite cause you can't afford netting.

Love bugs are literally harmless. They carry no disease, don't bite and the worst they do is potentially cause a bit of damage to your car's paint and can be hard to wash off. In other words, a first-world problem.

lol Florida isn't some kind of terrible jungle that when you walk out of your house insects descend upon you sharks feast when you enter the water right after gators bite you! I have lived here all my life and find it quite a nice place to be! Do we have all those things? Yes but only in the places where you would expect to find them. Don't wanna see snakes or gators? Don't live near the woods or out in a secluded area. Even then my friend lives in the woods she has yet to seen a snake. Its like moving to California and being afraid of rattle snakes everywhere you go! It aint gonna happen, unless of course you are in their territory! Sharks are numerous but attacks don't happen that frequently at all, there was only 1 fatal shark in the US attack last year and it was in California. Panthers again you don't see here at all unless you try to go to the secluded areas where they would reside. While we might not have terrain differences some cities have huge differences in the landscaping and what they offer that it offers people some pretty good variety.

Thank you for actually taking the time to explain things to me, rather than just bring up unattractive factors about California.

I've only seen a rattlesnake once, and it was during a hike in the mountains. Visiting California and seeing a lot of squirrels makes more sense.

I was reading an article about sharks in Florida and a picture was posted... It scared the crap out of me! They were so close to the shore.

Again, the Love Bugs have never damaged the paint on my car. I do not wash them off on a regular basis, either. I've heard that eons ago, they damaged paint on cars, but since the 80s, car paint has become a little sturdier. The Love Bugs are nothing but unattractive and annoying. They bring no harm to me or my cars. The worst things about them are keeping my sunroof closed and cleaning their guts off my windshield.

@raven24 - Florida is not as bad as you've been told. I have yet to see a gator/croc outside Disney or Gatorland. I haven't heard rumors about, much less seen panthers, lol. No poisonous snakes yet, either. I saw Jaws long before I saw an ocean and have an irrational fear of sharks, so I'm with you on that...but I'd be as scared in California as I am here. I do my swimming in pools!!

I'm not saying Florida is for everyone. But it isn't quite the danger-infested, wild place you may have heard it is. Really. (And I didn't say anything bad about California, either.)

Don't worry luv, I wasn't referring to you.:)

What creeps me out about the bugs is they're attached.

That's what people who are in love do, too! ;) It's sweet! Bug romance. :) <3 (Is that a heart? I was trying to make a heart.)

The first time I saw it, I took a picture. I thought it was a unique thing I was witnessing, lol. That was back when we used film. I still have it somewhere, I'm sure. :)

I still have a Polaroid! Sadly, no film. Too expensive.

I can see why people would find it really cool. It's definitely unique. It absolutely freaks me out, though haha.

OH must have been a mating day sometimes that happens and usually its nurse sharks!
images

supposedly they are timid, but a shark is a shark and I aint going in if I see em! lol
And of course! Yeah seeing gators is much like seeing a rattlesnake over there! Swimming in lakes just isn't a good idea here unless the locals are prone to hang out in that area! Ameba and gators and not something you wanna roll the dice in! But yeah overall florida is pretty timid! Although I am super jealous of California's weather :< its too humid here.

Exactly!!!! A shark is still a shark, there's no way I'm getting in water with even baby sharks!

I was also watching a a special about the snakes in Florida (I watch a lot of things haha) and that scared the holy crap out of me. Water moccasins.... Aaahhhh!

Glad Florida isn't as scary as some people make it out to be. It doesn't help when people refer to it as "The Swamps." Everytime I hear that, I get this image of a bayou/swamp with a whole bunch of alligators, poisonous snakes and other water creatures. Freaks me out! But you guys have eased my fear and now it won't be bad when I finally visit!

I honestly thought the Everglades were mountains (this was before I learned there are no mountains in Florida). I googled it and was surprised haha. It's a swamp, right?

I heard a story of an alligator in the MK parking lot, but that was only one time. I'm not afraid at all.:)

The everglades are like a HUGGGEE swamp jungle area where basically its a free for all for what you might see! But don't worry that's super south near miami. There are some gators near disney and some have even gotten inside close enough to the logs of splash mountain! BUT fear not they are usually little guys and someone is soon sent in to remove em.

THE horror. lol btw this is like a 1 in a trillion chance of ever happening again. Gators don't like boats

If I ever saw that, I'd faint, first. After coming to, I'd head straight for the exit of the park. Screw that, no flippin' way dude.

Ahaha I promise you they don't really like to bother people! Just the big ones you wanna stay clear of.

That one was big, though haha! It was big enough. You don't see alligators in LA. You'll see some squirrels, dogs and cats. As an Angeleno, seeing an alligator, even a baby one, would give me a heart attack.

It's not the alligators in Florida that you need to worry about.
The first perimeter of fences around Animal Kingdom? They weren't built to keep the animals in.
They're designed to keep these things out.
