>>After a nine-year hiatus, a direct flight to Hawaii from Orange County is returning to John Wayne Airport.

Beginning Saturday, travelers can start booking summer flights from John Wayne Airport to Honolulu aboard a daily United Airlines flight.

The daily route, according to an announcement by the airline, begins Mary 6 and is scheduled to depart SNA daily at 8:30 a.m. and arrive in HNL at 11:30 a.m. The return flight leaves Honolulu at 12:50 p.m. Hawaii time and lands at 9:10 p.m. in Orange County.

United did not say specifically when those flights would begin. A search at united.com on Thursday showed routes from Orange County to Hawaii connecting through San Francisco.<<

>>Officials with JWA also announced on Friday a host of new routes and a new airline for the airport.

Allegiant Air has begun flying nonstop routes to Boise, Idaho, Grand Junction, Colorado, Medford, Oregon, Missoula, Montana, Provo, Utah, Las Vegas, Reno, and Spokane, Washington.

Sun Country Airlines is another airline coming to JWA, providing service to Dallas, and Minneapolis.

Southwest Airlines will restart its routes to Cabo San Lucas on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula in March. The airline also will depart for Puerto Vallarta as of March 11.<<

Good news in general! John Wayne is truly the best and easiest airport in SoCal to use.

Bad news is that the Hawaii flight is operated by crummy and grumpy United Airlines.

It's a shame that Hawaiian Airlines can't get a slot at John Wayne instead. Their revised cabins are fabulous, and their service is lightyears beyond anything a bad airline like United could offer.

And their fresh onboard Mai Tai's are some of the best cocktails in the stratosphere!

I'm hoping that the soon-to-be expanded Southwest presence in Chicago will lead to an increase in direct flights to Long Beach and SNA.

I don't think LAX is QUITE as bad as many here do, but it's definitely more of a hassle and further away, especially when DL's the focus of the trip.

Although I suppose the LAX experience probably varies by terminal. My last trip to LAX was on United, which not only was a terrible flight experience, but the LAX United Terminal was significantly worse than the Southwest terminal I had used in the past.

I love Long Beach Airport. Heck, Battlebots uses some old hangers to film their shows.

I use many factors to decide which airport to use.

For our June Trip, a Nonstop flight to Cleveland won, even though it uses LAX.

Lucky enough to have Priority Counter access, TSA Pre-check, and priority boarding, along with Economy Plus seating.

So using Terminal 7 isn't bad. We will have Executive Car Service, so dropped off and picked up right at the curb.

I can't remember the last time I was on a flight and received my beverage served in real glassware.

Might have been British Airways back in 1997....Boston to London n' back.

Sweetie, you need to sit next to me on your next flight! 😀

I had my first guava juice on Hawaiian Airlines. I drank the stuff for years.

They still serve POG Juice on Hawaiian Airlines. It's actually a mix of guava, orange and passion fruit. It's their staple beverage, and the stewardess often just says "Coffee, tea, or POG?". Well, not really. But they serve it by the gallons on Hawaiian. 🤣

Are they still going to change the name of the Airport from John Wayne to "soical justice warrior flight port of equality for everyone...except republicans because they are evil" ?

No, that idea from some activists passed quickly in 2020 amid a public outcry to keep the name and not try to erase our local history and culture, warts and all. John Wayne lived just a few miles from the airport, in Newport Beach.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors, given their jobs by voters every 4 years, refused to even consider renaming the airport.

It is still proudly, and will remain, John Wayne Airport.

The statue of The Duke with a giant American flag draped behind it remains near Baggage Claim. It's a popular photo spot.

Whew! Thank God. I was worried. You can't get any more American than John Wayne. You got a issue with him, then you have no soul.

And if you erase him from history for being who he was over 50 years ago, then you also have to immediately erase John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and many others. They were all various forms of bigots, womanizers (if not outright sexual predators), and regular users of unapproved words.

And they weren't just an actor, they were United States Presidents!

Thankfully, a touch of sanity still reigns in Orange County, and the small group of activists who wanted John Wayne Airport renamed were quickly shouted down by the public and the Board of Supervisors told them to go worry about something else.

I wish all these "woke" people would go back to sleep. World was a better place before they started crying about everyone and everything. This is what happens when you have a generation of kids growing up with participation trophies.

I have to say I prefer Ontario over SNA...I flew regularly out of Ontario for the last 2 years (pre Covid) and just found it a better experience than SNA. I will say that the amenities kinda suck at Ontario but I rarely spent enough time waiting to take advantage of them.
As for Hawaii, those Mai tais will probably make our flying decision much easier when we go to Hawaii either later this year or next year. We are thinking of spending Christmas on Maui and/or Kauai.

I really want an affordable nonstop flight from LGB to MCO, but I would take one from John Wayne as well.
Frontier Airlines from Ontario. $102 round trip, non-stop...or as low as $54 depending on your length of stay. I "know of" some popular twitter bloggers that did it and had zero issue with it.

'George' used to be our own vlogger right here on this Forum.

I really miss his insightful and entertaining videos he used to make when he visited Disneyland.
The honest commentary was fantastic.

Anyone ever fly Allegiant Air? I've never used them, but they're flying direct to Reno, and that's got my interest. Not sure if they're more of a Southwest type discount airline or a Spirit, where they'll charge you extra to not spit in your face.

I see, but don't forget to add on the cost of a carry on. I mean we got Jetblue from LAX for less than $100 round trip with a carry on and one checked bag between the two of us.
