Anyone ever fly Allegiant Air? I've never used them, but they're flying direct to Reno, and that's got my interest. Not sure if they're more of a Southwest type discount airline or a Spirit, where they'll charge you extra to not spit in your face.

They are based out of Las Vegas. The new Raiders Stadium is called Allegiant Stadium. Similar to Spirit.

>>Allegiant Air (usually shortened to Allegiant and stylized as allegiant) is an American ultra-low cost airline that operates scheduled and charter flights. As a major air carrier, it is the ninth-largest commercial airline in the United States.

Founded in 1997 as WestJet Express, it is wholly owned by Allegiant Travel Company, a publicly traded company with 4,000 employees and over US$2.6 billion market capitalization.[8] The corporate headquarters are in Summerlin, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas.[<<

Thanks. What I'm looking for is it like Spirit where they charge extra to choose a seat, charge extra to check in at the desk, charge extra for carryons, etc? Just tried to book a ticket, and that's exactly what they do. Significant extra fees for a carryon and for seat selection.

Here's an article on Frontier and the ways around the fees:

I have to say I prefer Ontario over SNA...I flew regularly out of Ontario for the last 2 years (pre Covid) and just found it a better experience than SNA. I will say that the amenities kinda suck at Ontario but I rarely spent enough time waiting to take advantage of them.
As for Hawaii, those Mai tais will probably make our flying decision much easier when we go to Hawaii either later this year or next year. We are thinking of spending Christmas on Maui and/or Kauai.

Ontario is also a very good airport. I flew out of Ontario several times in the early 2010's, back when they had a lot more flights that fit my itineraries.

But it's the drive that kills the Ontario option for OC dwellers; specifically the trip out the 91 freeway and then off to the 10. Where I live, it's a very fast shot down the 57 to John Wayne, and I can often leave my driveway and 20 minutes later be pulling up to the valet parking stand right in front of the Delta terminal at John Wayne. I love their valet parking service!

I was listening to Tim Conway Jr. on KFI about a year ago, just before Covid hit, and he interviewed the new general manager of Ontario airport. He explained that Ontario is no longer a part of LAX World Airports and is its own entity now, and they are working hard to make it a better experience and get new flights domestically and internationally. But then Covid hit, so I'm not sure where they are with that now.

But just the fact that Ontario is no longer run by the dreadfully bad LAX management should improve them easily.

Anyone remember about a decade ago when there was a move to rename Ontario airport Walt Disney International Airport, in a rather brazen attempt to capture more tourist traffic headed to Disneyland?

The locals were having none of it, and the idea died rather quickly. Many locals knew instinctively that Walt had no history with the Inland Empire and no reason to name their airport after him. I can't say I blame them, it was a cheesy and pandering move. You could make a better case to rename Palm Springs airport after Walt, since at least Walt owned a vacation home in Palm Springs for a few decades. But I would think there are better celebs more connected to Palm Springs to name the airport after; Fran Sinatra, Bob Hope, Dinah Shore, Dean Martin, etc.

I'm in Corona off the 15 so it's a nice 20 minute drive for me to Ontario. The biggest downsides are availability of flights and sometimes higher prices though I will say they are probably on par with flights from SNA. Really have to fly out of LAX to get cheapest fares.

My list of preferred airport looking at location (how easy to get to and park if needed from my house in West Anaheim), ease of us at the airport (Drop-off/pickup) and parking, Airline counters, TSA, getting to gates, etc.)

1. Long Beach
2. John Wayne
3. Ontario
4. Burbank
5. LAX

Now pricing (including all fees), which Airline, is it Non-stop, or how many stops?, etc. are also strong parts of the decision.

In June, as mentioned, I opted for LAX.

Why?

I could use United Miles, no extra fees.

Non-stop

decent hours versus middle of the night.

If I couldn't get a non-stop, I would have picked John Wayne with one stop.

I love flying into John Wayne from the Northwest and they use the RNAV Z RWY 20R approach and you make the right banking decent into runway 20R.

Notice the waypoint titled MNNIE? It's appropriatly named because if you are sitting in a window seat on the left side of the plane and start looking out your window at that point you can see Disneyland as you pass by:

Another fun fact: One of the arrival proceedures into that area (used by both John Wayne and Long Beach) is called DSNEE4 and a few of the waypoints along that route are Disney related.

Very cool, didn't know about the Disney tie in's to waypoints. I live in Corona so we have quite a few flights that fly over us on their way into SNA.

Wow, that is so cool! I have flown that exact route and seen that exact view out of my window on several approaches into John Wayne, but I had no idea what was actually happening until now.

There's also a route I've flown many times coming in from the east where we make a banking turn directly over my house that's about a mile southeast of the 91/55 freeway interchange. It's so amazing to see your exact house from the air as you fly into John Wayne, and then 45 minutes later be walking into that exact house. It's almost creepy!

Ok, that's pretty cool!

I live about 5.5m from San Jose International (as the crow flies) and when planes are taking off to the north (90% of the time they are) they have to make a sharp right turn and fly toward the south to avoid the flight path of planes that are landing into SFO. Even if the destination is to the north they still have to fly south first then turn around and go north to have risen to an altitude to be above SFO's Class B airspace. Anyhoo, I live at roughly the red dot:

The con is that a lot of planes fly over our area, the pro is that in the left window seat I can see my house as well.

Lots of waypoints that I can decipher here:
MLPTS: Milpitas (where I live)
STCLR: Santa Clara (a city and name of our county)
SPTNS: Go Spartans! (My alma mater, San Jose State)
TECKY: Techy? Silicon Valley?
EBAYE: I think you can figure that one out.

Wait, the FAA has designated the official waypoint for San Jose as SPTNS for the Spartans of San Jose State?!?

That's hysterical! I absolutely love it! 🤣

Only at your convenience, could you look into whether or not the FAA has designated Fullerton as either the Hornets (Fullerton Junior College) or the Titans (Cal State Fullerton)??? I would do it myself, but I have no idea how that FAA website works.

It would make me so happy to know my friends I've never met at Fullerton Junior College (Go Hornets!) were getting some well-deserved recognition up in the air.

And... Go Spartans!

I checked all of the charts for Fullerton Muni and didn't see anything, and expanded my search a bit for the surrounding airports, but no luck. Sorry. I did notice that Cal State Fullerton does show up as a visual waypoint on the VFR map for that area:

You can find the charts for any airport on AirNav. For example, for Fullerton it's at: http://www.airnav.com/airport/FUL
The charts are at the bottom of the page for STAR arrivals, runway approaches, and departure procedures.

Well thank you! That's actually fascinating.

It's a shame they can't identify Fullerton with a TITAN marker. Those kids work so hard.

I also notice that Villa Park is ignored, and covered with that block of text instructing pilots about things not at all related to Villa Park.

I'm going to see who I need to talk to to get my house identified as a marker for Villa Park, maybe with a martini symbol or the code word CKTAIL. If I need to paint my roof red and install fog lights to qualify, I'll do it! 🍸
