Yes, I remember it was talked about, but the fact that this article seemed like a press release made me wonder.

Lost Island is set to receive guests by the Summer of 2011, a year after the show concludes its six-year run on ABC.

Why would Disney open up a TV show based attraction after the show is off the air?

Look at the TV show based attractions in the parks, none of them have lasted more than 5 years - and the only one that did (Who Wants to be a Millionaire Play It!) was still on TV (albeit not prime time) during it's entire run in the park.

I suppose it's not out of the realm of possibility that it could work, but it seems that amount of money this would require would be much better suited elsewhere.

They opened American Idol and it may be off the air soon (or one can hope at least :p )

Different situation completely. AI paid for everything with the attraction. Disney had nothing to lose with it.

Pretty close. Disney paid next to nothing. Freemantle paid the lion's share, which is probably why it looks so damn good (even if it isn't my type of entertainment).

As to Lost, there has never been any serious talk of doing anything with the franchise, which is sad to me because I love the show (although to be fair, I do know some folks involved with the show so I may be biased a bit).

That said, I spoke with Michael Emerson last year just before the Emmys and he said that to his knowledge no one from Disney/WDI had ever talked to anyone on the show about any sort of attraction/experience. He said it would have been a great idea if done right and one he would have enjoyed taking part in.

At the time, we were talking about the parks, but you could certainly do a very kewl experience on what used to be DI ... or at this point .. PI!

There were definitely talks, but nothing ever came of it.

No thank you.

But I am very interested in a nightime "Forgotten Island with mysterious steampunk archaic technology and Alternate Reality Gaming experience" on Discovery Island. Like the MYST idea, only not based on anything crummy and instead original and cool...

 :D

Definitely an interesting article, although it definitely smells fishy. Screen captures from the show passed off as concept art? While it sounds cool, I'm definitely calling hoax on this one.

First of all I just do not see Disney doing much of anything with Discovery island for quite a while. While an island attraction sounds great it is a logistical nightmare. Sure it would be cool but Disney's current track record does not show them doing anything but taking shortest and easiest path to a quick buck. Building and operating an island based attraction is about as far from easy and quick as you can get. Also while the Lost concept fits Discovery Island like a glove the franchise has all but played itself out. In ten years most people will have no clue what Lost is let alone understand a 4 8 15 16 23 42 reference. If they were going to do anything with it I see them going in more of a pirate direction.

It might be interesting for a few years (and probably with some features from Night Kingdom), but it would have no real staying power if it were based from a TV series. Perhaps if Disney themed it to Robinson Crusoe, but even that has passed from popular culture to a large extent.

Like many people, outside of the audition rounds I'm somewhat indifferent towards the show. My girlfriend is a big fan so it's often on in the background and I'll be in and out of the room. That being said, I've seen the show in the studios once, and was entertained. To me, it's on par with Lights Motors Action - I enjoy it, I might even plan on doing it on a particular day (as opposed to deciding to do it last minute as a show is being let into the theater).

I'm also fairly sure that it's still the most popular show on television. I don't know if that's still the case, but if it's not #1, it's near the top, and probably the top rated show that the entire family will watch together. The scope of its appeal is similair enough to Disney World to make it a logical fit, and I imagine it will stay there as long as the television show is still viable.

The key word is "was" at the studios. If they were going to concert Discovery Island the theme would need to last as close to forever as possible.
