Living Seas Rehab: August - November

I'm relieved to see that the dates they've chosen for the Rehab are after my Divequest on the 10th August, I've been looking forward to it for months and definitely would have cancelled if the pavillion was closed - My parents would have had to make a reservation in the restaurant just to watch :hammer:

I can't believe that it's going to be closed over my vacation in September!
Hopefully, the place will retain most of its original theme with added Nemo enhancements. This was one of my favorite places in all of WDW.

I keep on hearing on how this new Nemo reworking will appeal to children. Let me tell you that seeing the Living Seas pavilion for the first time as a youngin' was one of the most profound experiences of my life. The set-up was awesome, with even a recreation of the Nautilous in the entrance along with an array of Diving Bells. It all told a subtle story of man's evolution of interaction with the oceans.

As a kid I was never too fond of waiting 5 minutes for the film to start, let alone end. (Later on I would grow to love it) When it was time to enter the hydrolators, my imagination kicked in overdrive.

A long time ago my family had recieved a full color booklet about Epcot Center in the mail. Living Seas was previewed in it, and it showed people swimming or riding in submarines. I honestly believed that we would soon board a mini-sub and zip around the sea base.

When those Hydrolators opened up and I crawled inside, I felt the tension and awe of something I had never seen. The scrolling rock was fake, and as a little guy I felt particularly clever to figure out how it worked. However, the magic was still there.

The line for the Hydrolators truly was a pain in the butt. Every time someone came in with a wheelchair, the ride would stop for about a minute. It was like a Handicap convention. The only nice part about this was that once I was on the ride, it would get stuck in those glass tubes and I could spy out into the underwater world.

The whole Seabase Alpha design was awesome. Once I got home, I drew hundreds of sea bases, and had a framed Seabase Alpha bumper sticker that was a prized possession.

As a I grew up, I began to love the Living Seas all the more. Last October, my wife and I actually got to pet the manta rays. We watched the cuttlefish change colors and strobe for a half-hour. Although aging, the pavilion still had the magic.

There's one thing missing from Epcot today. The old park instilled feelings of awe and anticipation of the future. Everyone walked away optimistic about where we as a people were headed. From future transportation in World of Movie, to new environments in Horizons, Spaceship Earth and Living Seas. Even Imagination showed that nothing was impossible. The Land and Seas both showed that by living in harmony and using our brains the world could open new doors.

While I'm looking forward to the change, I fear that Nemo will smother the intent and inspiration much like the new redoes and overlays have struck other rides of the past.

Wouldn't it be cool if Bea Arthur from the Golden Girls was stationed in front of the Living Seas and handed out fish food to all the little girls and boys?

I would also like to see Disney get a little more creative with their rides. They could re-instate the seacabs and then take you through the aquarium and at the end of the ride....Bea Arthur stands on a platform and beats a turtle to death with her purse. Think of the possibilities.

I did like Warlord's Bill Nye idea. I love EEA with him and Ellen. I would be really disapointed in WDI if the Film is lost. But I would welcome the seacabs. I like the idea of keeping the hydrolaters but reversing them. D-troops.com has a really good article and how the Pavillion may look if Nemo isn't kept in check.
Let’s load into the first of two theaters, where we stand to watch a 2 minute presentation on the Seas.

Narrator: Try to imagine, just for a moment, that somewhere in the endless reaches of the universe ... on the outer edge of a galaxy of a hundred thousand million suns ... deep within a cluster of slowly forming planets, a small sphere of just the right size lies just the right distance from its mother star ... cooling in the coldness of space. Try to imagine. Try to imag-

Suddenly, a blue fish sweeps across the screen and cuts our narrator off.

Dory: Hey, lady! Imagine this!

Narrator: Excuse me, I was educating these Epcot visitors.

Dory: Oh, who wants to hear that old stuff? I brought along my good friend, Harpo! Oh! Look at all those people in the human tank!

Suddenly, Nemo and his friends clutter the screen. Marlin calms them down with a brief lecture on the Seas, and guests are let loose to explore the amazing Living Seas with Nemo and Company.

and it rained, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained some more, and it rained with a 20% chance of evening showers, and it rained, and it rained, and it rained...
my family always makes fun of that part of the movie (even though we love it)

anyone ever watch the presentation on Disc 2 of Finding Nemo with Jacque Cousteau's son? its great! the first time i watched it, i thought "they should put this at the Living Seas!" its actually educational, and entertaining! (ok, so maybe its more entertaining than edu- nevermind, but still, it would fit)

I have to agree with Grim Grinner. The Living Seas was an awe-inspiring attraction for me when I was a youngster. The whole Sea Base concept was just great, although it may be long in the tooth now.

I have great hopes for the new refurbs. I can only hope they are as good as the new Land updates (as people have said).

I can't believe they're already going off about something that hasn't even been announced.

This should be of better value than what was presented: http://d-troops.com/articles.php?id=607 The earlier article was written in May as a prediction into the future, whereas the current article, written after the announced project, is more balanced in its presentation of news/rumors and the opinion of a writer to keep Nemo from being THE story (versus hosts OF a story).

We just visited The Living Seas and had not been there for a good ten years. (No particular reason why, only time constraints). We enjoyed it alot, especially the manatees and sharks. I hope that the focus does not go on Nemo for this attraction. I would like to see a renovated version of what it is, a really cool way to see lots of underwater life. By the way, I was never all that crazy for the re-do on Journey Into the Imagination. I liked the orignal one, with Figment doing his little dance all around. Sometimes its better to just improve something, not change it all around.

at Crush's Turtle Talk, does the human cast member (script) say that we're at "The Living Seas" or "Seabase Alpha". That may be a good indicator of what's to come.
The Seabase Alpha concept is maintained actually by Crush saying that we're in a "human tank". Think about it, a fish tank is a contained environment of water, surrounded by air. An undersea base is a contained environment of air, surrounded by water.

well, it could be worse, they could retheme it to Sealab 2021.........bizarro!
