Trip Report Live Trip Reporting June 27 to July 8, 2015

Hello All!

Here we are in the World...which means it is time for me to start up the Live trip reporting. If you have followed along with us before, Welcome Back! If this is your first Brifraz trip report welcome along for the ride. I try to post each day of our trip with at least a couple pictures. Mainly fun and frivolity, but also the occasional newsworthy item and a piece here or there of personal opinion.

There are three of us in the Brifraz team, myself, my wife, and our 11 year old daughter. As you can see by my signature below, we have made quite a few trips to the World. My wife and I are both high school teachers, so our trips are almost always summer, Christmas, or Spring Break. This will be our second 4th of July week in a row. If you want to read about last year, see the aforementioned signature. Also, if you want the 'pre-game' for this trip, see here.

So, yesterday, we set out from the house at 6:45pm and this morning, we pulled into the resort right around 10:15am. About 13.5 hours of driving and 2 hours of breaks. What does that mean? It's nap time! But since I doubt you want to read about us falling sound asleep in our hotel room, here's what has happened so far.

We arrived at 10:15am at which time we surprised our daughter with the news that we would be spending one night at Art of Animation. In fact, she hadn't expected us to leave until this morning, but you can read about all that in the pre-trip if you want. Check in was quick and easy and our CM, Doug, was exceptional.

After check-in, we went right to our room on the top floor of the Little Mermaid building 7. This being our first time here, we are quite impressed with the room. Very nice and a little more spacious than I was expecting. Had a little trouble with some magic bands that weren't activated, but once that got resolved (over the phone - our daughter's worked so we could get in the room, but ours didn't) we changed into swimwear and toured the resort grounds before hitting the pool. The theming here is great. We have been to All-Stars before and find this MUCH more satisfying. That being said, we are quite spoiled by our DVC at Old Key West and the crowded-ness and noise level here is not nearly so relaxing as over there.

Once we had explored the buildings, it was pool time. After some chair searching (OK, a lot of searching...) we found a spot to stow our stuff and hit the pool.

Love the fact that every sign in the area is done with the silver fish from Finding Nemo. Our daughter loved the music playing underwater. Hate the fact that towels are not readily available. Evidently they are first thing in the morning, but otherwise you have to get them at the front desk. Oh well, air drying was fine for us. After a bit of playing, a storm started to roll in, so it was out of the pool. It did allow for a nice picture of an empty Big Blue Pool.

We headed into Landscape of Flavors and got some lunch. My wife had a burger (not sure what all was topping it) and my daughter and I split the make-your-own pasta - spaghetti with alfredo, chicken, garlic, and parmesan. I was pretty happy with the size of the portion and the three of us all got enough to eat from just the two meals. If you are going to visit, please note that they accept Tables in Wonderland there since they don't have a table service restaurant in the resort. Can't beat 20% savings!

After this bit of rest, we are thinking of going over to Studios for a quick Frozen-themed visit (sing along and fireworks). I am a bit Frozen-ed out, but our daughter is still pretty obsessive about it. If you want to read more about that check out last summer's trip when we did the opening night of the Frozen package at DHS.

If I can, I'll update on the evening tonight. If not, we will be heading to Universal tomorrow for IOA (but not Potter, yet) and will update after that!

I am sad for you your trip is over and sad for me because it means no more TR.

Don't worry, I still have to collect my thoughts on our visit and I have quite a few...but, I'm spending the next couple days in Washington, DC with in-laws and then back to work 8am-9pm next week. Hope to find some time during a meal to get those thoughts together and share!

OK, so our family DC plans for today have fallen through as a stomach bug has hit one of the kids. Bummer for the family, but great for my intrepid trip report followers.

Magic Kingdom thoughts (please bear with me as this is somewhat stream of consciousness/abstract random) - for the most part, the Magic Kingdom looked good and seemed to be running pretty darn well during our visit. Obviously, Pirates is closed for refurb and we didn't do anything in Adventureland this trip (except walk through) and we didn't go over to Storybook Circus at all. I didn't do Big Thunder with the girls, so I have no thoughts on that either (although the projected rocks have bothered me since they were instated).

Tom Sawyer Island looked very good when we were there (sometimes it is a little less clean than most places). Splash animatronics were in good shape, BUT for some reason the Mickey cloud was missing in the riverboat room?? A little shocked to see both Tomorrowland Terrace (no noodles to be seen) open for lunch and dinner and Diamond Horseshoe open for lunch. Of course, we didn't hit either of them, but it was good to see them open - now, if only Aunt Polly's could get open again...

At Pan, the curtain that blocks the Peter at the wheel scene was pulled open a bit which is not very good show. Mine Train and Little Mermaid both looked good and were enjoyable - Mine Train was great early in the morning before the sun could cause the final scene to be a washout. And Haunted Mansion looked great. I mean, really great. I saw things that I have never noticed before and that is a very good thing.

Still disappointed as ever with the narration on TTA/Peoplemover and the lights were not changing color when we rode at night. The Buzz queue is always something that has bothered me - not very good show until the end of the line and always dirty. Nothing has changed about it, except my opinion. After spending 3 days at Universal and seeing the state of many of their queues, Buzz doesn't look quite so bad. It still bothers me greatly as it is one of the weakest Disney queues, but it is better than an endless series of switchbacks outside in only partial shade with scattered TVs overhead. When (and I ask this every visit), oh when are they going to upgrade the Speedway cars?

Parades, fireworks, and castle show were all running at a very high level - which is definitely a very good thing! I found the Fastpass Plus viewing area for Wishes to be nice, but to my mind it was way overbooked - reviews I have read spoke about being able to sit and relax on the faux grass, while we were packed in and standing up the whole time. Still, the view was very good and we only got there about an hour before the show.

I think that wraps up the Magic Kingdom thoughts. More to come later.

I definitely feel like the storms were worse this year as well. Last year was our first July 4th and while there were storms most days it was nothing like this year!

We will also be down in December - 24th through January 2nd. Will we see you there?
Yup, we'll be there from 12/21 - 1/3 with 2 days of universal this time in middle of the trip.

OK, survived the week of 8am-9pm days and ready to share thoughts about our trip...

Epcot thoughts - we spent less time in Epcot than usual on this trip. OK, maybe not really less time as two of the days our daughter was at soccer camp, my wife and I were at Rose and Crown from 11am-3pm. But, seriously, we did hit everything in Future World and almost nothing in World Showcase. We hit every single attraction in Future World with the exception of Turtle Talk, which our daughter just didn't want to visit this time. There really weren't any surprises. Ellen's Energy Adventure is still in a state of great disrepair (the Ellen versus serpent scene which is now totally empty and quiet is just horrible show) and sadly our experience on that ride reaffirms the belief that some people just don't get it...the mom with screaming baby who hopped off the vehicle leaving two other kids onboard. Test Track had a some synch issues where our designed vehicle didn't show up on the 'score' screens after each test during the ride. Imagination with Figment is still a sad, sad thing and the fact that the upstairs area is still closed off makes me depressed whenever we walk through. That said, using the Magic Eye Theatre for and Inside Out preview with some of the 4D effects in use, is a good thing. Definitely a good thing that I can only hope will lead to Inside Out resurrecting the Wonders of Life pavilion (a guy can dream, can't he??). Of course, Illuminations was excellent and the 4th tag was impressive to say the least.

Hollywood Studios thoughts - with all the current rumors flying about where Studios will be in a few years and the possibility of some announcements about it coming soon, I'm not sure what to think about it. Tower of Terror, Rockin' Roller Coaster, and Toy Story Midway Mania are all great attractions and all were performing at a high level when we experience them (twice each during the trip). It was sad to think that this was our last two visits to the Animation Tour. Back in the 90s and early 2000s I really liked the Animation film (Robin Williams version), actual tour, and experiences. The addition of the animation academy was great and I can only hope that it will have a home in the new Hollywood Adventure (or whatever it ends up being named). I will be beyond incredibly sad if Muppet Vision 4D goes away. I am still entertained more by the pre-show for it than many other entire attractions. Sadly, some of the effects in the theatre still don't work (burn rubber, some of the fireworks). Personally I think the Muppets have a place in any future incarnation of the park and see no reason to change the show (I found the Constantine additions to the pre-show to be less than awesome) as it is certainly still entertaining. The empty/closed buildings both in Pixar Place and around Echo Lake make it feel almost like the sad little strip mall that never can get tenants for all their pads. BTW, I am reaching a point with Frozen that I accept it's popularity (which is still very high with my daughter and her friends), but really don't need to experience it any more - but, I will admit, the sing-along is not the worst thing on earth and meets a very definite need among guests for something Frozen where the kids can 'get involved.' It's also another 40 minutes sitting in air conditioning. And the Frozen fireworks are really quite a good show and I'm always glad when Studios can have fireworks.

Animal Kingdom thoughts - that's a lot of temporary walls. A lot of temporary walls. Glad for all the construction and future potential, but....that's a lot of walls. Pretty much all of Asia and Dinoland that borders Discovery River is walled off. Lucky for us, crowds were pretty light on our visits, so we could do everything we wanted to quite easily. With the exception of the state of the Yeti himself, Everest is still one of the best thrill rides around (IMHO). I'm not one of the people who hates the Chester/Hester version of Dinoland and actually find the theming to be an interesting reflection of a chunk of Americana that is rapidly disappearing - the roadside attraction, and since our daughter absolutely loves Primeval Whirl, we hit is every time. The safari was an odd mix this visit with no Elephants, Giraffes or Zebras and the bridge stationary, but active and interesting cats and others. The walls in the Tree of Life area were a pretty big distraction - not sure what is going on in front of the tree of life, but hopefully it will be a good thing. We didn't do Kali this trip, but to me that is no great loss. Wish we had time to do Tough to be a Bug as it is a good show and I would have liked to see the Tree of Life up close.

Thoughts on Universal's parks soon.

10:53pm and back in the room. Both girls are already fast asleep and I know I need to get there soon. Wake-up is set for 7am so we can get ourselves over to Universal.

So, about 5:45pm we headed to the main lobby of AoA because during the lazy afternoon, our daughter had done a sketch of Ariel and Jasmine for a sketch contest they hold each day here. She did not win, but did get a future animator certificate. Then we drove over to Hollywood Studios. We were quite happy to find that they were filling in empty parking spaces, so we ended up in the third row. It was then a short walk to Guest Services to get our Annual Passes activated. Since they were DVC, we had to get that done in person. Of course, there were some issues...somehow they got in the system as renewals of our last passes which meant that they were going to expire in a couple weeks. NO! That won't work. So, after about 10-15 minutes of computering, the CM got things worked out (we hope). To thank us for not getting crazy and being very patient, we got a couple free FP+. So, at 7pm we headed into the park and started with Toy Story Midway Mania (which we had FP+ booked for) and then hit Tower of Terror and Rockin' Roller Coaster (which were the thanks FP+s). It was quite nice to hit those headliners all in one fell swoop...although, my stomach did a bit of swooping after those three in a row. Here we are getting ready for RRC.

Our plan had been to go do the Frozen sing along at this point, but hunger won out over that and we decided to book it for another afternoon. For dinner, we had discussed different counter service options, but instead decided to head to the Tune-In Lounge that is attached to 50's Prime Time. Great deal! Three seats at the bar and the full menu. Great service and company as well.

We then headed to the street in front of Grauman's (yay, no big Hat!) for the Frozen fireworks. Chatted with two very nice families on either side of us while waiting about 20 minutes for them to start. Here are a couple shots from my wife's iPhone. I haven't gone through the pics from my Nikon, yet, but since I didn't know the show that well, my timing left something to be desired.

And I just love that THIS is what frames those pictures, NOT the big hat.

By 10pm we were out of the park and coming back to...

And now...sleep!
I love Tune-In Lounge, I can get Miller Light there. Many people don't know it's a full service bar.

The last picture of your daughter is hilarious! She captured my exact feelings about leaving Disney every trip. :p Loved your TR and thanks for sharing!

I didn't notice the mickey cloud missing in splash, but didn't look for it. I just know it's always there and seen it so many times, now I'm gonna look for it during Christmas trip. One note for you as well for the Wishes fastpass, when we were in there for ours too we were closer to entrance and right before the show started, the cast members were packing up and leaving from where they scan you to get in and they told everyone standing on the outside of the entrances that didn't have a fastpass that they could now go in and fill in the empty space. That kind of made me angry.
