Limewire P2P free version. any other geeks know if it contains *malware?

my daughter just told me she is using the free version.

anyone know if this is one of those p2p surreptitious little progs?

my fav site for researching malware, Russian Anti-Virus outfit Kaspersky Labs, has been down...must have been a wild Friday night (or is it Saturday morning there now?).

anyone know about the code the freeware version might slip?

a few months ago denver channel 7 had this to say. i don't trust telly news hacks. and later 7 had to change their story on limewire that they in fact did not find a password cracker in it.

I'm pretty sure Limewire's all right to use. Spybot, AdAware and AVG never show it as a threat. However, I've been trying to get rid of Kazaa's (sorry... KaZaA's ) Altnet malware for about three years now.

As far as I can tell, it is safe. But it is illegal on most parts as you are stealing music and can face hundreds of thousands of dollars in Fines along with potential jail time. This is why there are the FBI Anti-Piracy warnings on all CDs bought in the US and why there is that warning at the beginning of every movie. I believe that the Anti-Piracy laws apply internationally, but may be wrong. I would tell your daughter not to use Limewire and to stick to legally buying songs on iTunes or another equivilent site.
