'Lightyear' Coming Summer 2022

Now the failure of Lightyear isn't too concerning, sure it is a sign there needs to be something changed, but disney flicks tend to make money.

However looking deep into what talent Skydance studios is getting is really concerning and reminds me a lot of the whole Dreamworks split of the 00s. Sure Skydance is going to be Apple+ exclusive for a while, which could hurt it, but it is also getting big name/long time Disney people: Brad Bird, Nathan Greno (co director of Tangled), Rich Moore (director of Zootopia), Peggy Holmes (Director of Ariel's Beginning...which is one of the better prequels), Alan Menken (composer of many Disney flicks).

This is really concerning, it is a sign that something is going up in upper management that is causing a bunch of mostly big name disney creators away from disney to join another company. Something so bad that people would rather go join someone who is "cancelled" over Chappy and whoever else.

It is an interesting phenomenon, to be sure. What is it with Apple computer nerds creating hip, popular animation studios? First Pixar, now Skydance? What's in the water coolers up there in Cupertino?

Just watch... Future Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro will be hailed by fans and Wall Street alike for spending $18 Billion to buy wildly popular Skydance Studios in 2033. Disney's vaunted D'Amaro Renaissance of the 2030's continues, and finally Disney can tap into what the kids really like! And D'Amaro now rumored to run for Senate in '36, just after he returns an actual attraction to Disneyland's abandoned Carousel Theater!

Skydance was not founded by anyone at Apple. It was actually founded by David Ellison, the son of Oracle founder Larry Ellison, in 2006. Skydance has produced, or co-produced, may films in that time including some of the Mission Impossible movies, some of the new Terminator movies, some of the new Star Trek movies, the remake True Git, and many others including your favorite Top Gun: Maverick.

They got into animation when they partnered with the Spanish animation studio Ilion Animation in 2017 to produce two animated films, and then acquired Ilion in 2020. Lasseter was hired in 2019, during that partnership/acquisition. And there was a lot of upheaval with his hire, including voice talent like Emma Thompson quitting due to him being hired.

Luck will be their first animated film release coming in August, with another Spellbound being released in November. Both will be Apple+ exclusives.

We'll see how their animation fairs compared to their peers like Disney and Pixar, but with examples like Planet 51 and Wonder Park coming out of Ilion previously I don't have a lot of hope for them, but we'll see.

Right! Thanks for reminder. I recall now the revolt when they hired Lasseter. It was the scandal at the time.

I think the difference is Planet 51 and Wonder Park were made before massive Disney talent, now they are getting quite surprising names.
So personally, I wouldn't really count those two films yet on how their post-Disney talent joining output will go

My God, I don't even know how we did it before Wikipedia!

I have no idea what most of that means, and I've never seen either Top Gun movie in '86 or '22, but I seem to recall sitting through a D23 Expo presentation years ago where they explained the Apple connection to Pixar. And then John Lasseter, who used to work for Apple's Pixar, was picked up by Disney in the sale. And now John Lasseter, after being fired for chasing secretaries around his desk in Emeryville, works for Skydance, which is on Apple TV+, so... Apple.

Seriously, what's in the water coolers in Cupertino to make them so creative when it comes to animation?

I don't really like twitter, but I've seen screenshots of the director of Lightyear is not being super professional about the movie on there.

No screenshots from me, its gonna be a see it (and seek it) to believe it.

I like him! Taking on trolls who are criticizing a film they haven’t even watched. More artists should do the same.

Screw these jerks on Twitter. Defend your art against bogus reviews.

Watch the film, welcome to have an opinion.

Actually I met David Ellison a few times, so this is not Wikipedia stuff, I’ve followed his career for a long time.

But outside of the Apple+ deal there is no connection between Skydance and Apple that I’m aware of. Heck Pixar itself has even less Apple in it then Skydance as it’s more Lucas than Apple outside of Steve Jobs himself, but that doesn’t make it Apple.

I know you’re being cheeky here but with these things I like to be accurate and give the proper credit. I being only a few miles from Cupertino and knowing quite a few Apple employees, I can tell you most can’t draw to save their life.

It’s possible the quality will be better, but they both looked like standard Nick TV movies to me. And I say that actually liking Wonder Park.

Well I am not sure where else in the forums this will fit yet, but remember Lasseter's new company Skydance? They are making a movie for Apple+.

If there is anywhere in this forum where this fits please direct me there, but I found this interesting to post here first because it's sort of like a "speak of the devil" situation. Right as Lightyear is failing, Lasseter pulls out a teaser on what he is working on.

That does look quite good, but luck they will need to go out there and promote this with all the inevitable questions about Lasseter. Kind of interested they're promoting his involvement up front in the trailer and giving Lasseter the label of "creative visionary" as it kind of invites questions.

Whatever anyone thinks of Pixar's current direction, does anyone think it would have been viable for Disney to keep Lasseter there once the scandal broke regarding sexual harassment? I really don't think they had any option but to cut him loose.

I was questioning that too and there's a lot of people pointing that out, but I don't think it matters much cause the youtube video had a total of 4 million views last time I checked and the movie is already getting fantastic fan art.

it’s tricky to discuss this but there wasn’t any crazy offensive crime and John admitted to faults and apologized when confronted.

We have politicians that remain in office after being part of way worse scandals. I’m not sure John’s departure from Pixar was necessary or the best thing for the company.

You can bet that the next movie Johnny Depp is in his name will be advertised even though he was just part of a crazy court case where he admitted to all kinds of drug use and was accused of violence.

Hindsight is 50/50 I think. The Lasseter situation is tricky, still not fully sure how to feel about it, but ever since then there have been a lot worse people discovered in Hollywood that did truly horrific things.

Lasseter, as far as we know, only was a bit too huggy and touchy feely.

I am curious how that conversation will go, specifically around the question of whether people can be redeemed once something like this comes out. Either way, I think Lasseter ultimately needed to go somewhere else if redemption was ever going to be possible. Pixar being the company forever tied to him was probably just going cast a pall over their whole output if he just came back after some time out as if nothing had happened.

I think it was a bit more than that. Female employees had to develop defensive postures in meetings to avoid him running his hand up their legs, which is really beyond what should be acceptable no matter how much of a 'creative visionary' you are. Even before this came out, his drinking was also plainly noticeable. I remember thinking after watching his last D23 presentation that if I turned up to work like that I would be out the door or at least sent straight to rehab.

Until you (or your mother or your sister or your daughter) have had a superior's hand going up your skirt, kissing you without consent, and feeling completely powerless and invaded and scared for your person, your career and the roof over your head if you don't allow it.... let's not make judgements like "there wasn't any crazy offensive crime". Because yeah...

I was speaking only of the legal facts.
