Lice and the chances of getting it at WDW

Ok, so DS7 started 1st grade Monday and already they are sending home the 'Lice' letter. Standard fare, you know, lice has been found on one of the students in his class, yada, yada, yada. (not him, thank goodness!)Ok, so after confirming with his teacher that they don't share anything like headphones, stuffed animals, etc. it got me to thinking..........3D glasses, earphones at certain shows, etc. that you come into contact, sometimes on a hourly basis at WDW. What's the chance that your going to come into contact with the nasty headlice? I generally don't worry about it. But, is there something you could do to better your chance of not getting it from one of these items? Any thoughts on the subject?

I really hate the thought of getting it the more I think about it. Almost to the point that when we get to the home we're renting, I'd like to strip the beds and wash all the linens. I know it's being a little paranoid but EEEWWW!

I'd worry more about bedbugs at WDW than lice since they have had a problem with them in the recent past. As for the school and lice...do they have any rugs in his classrooms? One of our schools had a hard time getting the yearly lice problem tackled until they realized they were cleaning everything but the rugs in the double classrooms. Once they did that there were no further problems. If you are worried about lice during your trip take a nit comb and use it everyday, just to be sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about lice at WDW either. In my kids school they found that the kids would wear backpacks, and the girls long hair would fall on the backpacks. Then all the kids (this is 2nd grade) put all their backpacks in the same closet when they came in in the morning. Lice fest time.

The headphones are sounds dangerous are not cleaned after every use but all of the 3D glasses that you use are, once you deposit them in the bins after exiting the theatre they are wisked off to the Journey into Imagination pavilion over at Epcot where they are throughally cleaned in a huge custom built machine.

I wouldn't be too woried about it though, the chances are no different to being any where else, there is more chance brushing past someone at catching them than from a part of an attraction.

My biggest suggestion would not to try on the multitude of hats in the shops that you see so many people doing just for pictures. If I see a hat I want to buy, I will ask the person working to please get me a new one from the back when they have time, as I am a bit put off by multiple people I don't know putting on the same hat. I am happy to wait if it is busy, as I feel it's MY issue to be like that.

My husband calls me the Imalda Marcos of Disney hats, and I have yet to have a CM tell me it wasn't possible. The longest I had to wait was maybe 20 minutes once. I figure if I don't have the means to disinfect it prior to wearing it, I can at least have a little piece of mind not knowing someone else did and it was just put on the back shelf again after not selling the first time out:ROFLOL:

I wouldn't worry about lice, now bedbugs...oh yes, my cousin had a case of bedbugs from Caribbean beach resort and I have heard of many other cases.

I had wondered about this as they do have a rug in their classroom. I will have to email his teacher and ask if/what they do to disinfect the classroom.

I know it's probably worrying for nothing but, for me, lice is like ticks, just don't want to go there! Although, I guess ticks are easier to get rid of.

I think lice is one of the last things I'd be worried about on vacation. The chances of getting lice anywhere are pretty slim as long as you aren't sharing hats with people.

funny...I always felt worse about ticks than lice, but I'm in an area where there are deer ticks and the threat of lyme disease.

You can also put a few drops of Tea Tree Oil in all your shampoo. It's more natural than a lot of shampoos designed for lice and it not only helps get rid of lice if you have them...it helps keep them off you if you don't. Just make sure it's only about a 10% Tea Tree oil as anything higher isn't safe for the skin. I get mine at The Body Shop

Just do an allergy test on anyone that will be using the shampoo. Put a drop of tea tree on them and wait 24 hours. It is natural but that doesn't mean it's a non-allergen so always be safe and test, especially children's sensitive skin.

This should help with the icky feelings at least, knowing every time you wash your hair your preventing the little buggers from getting on you.

I have thought about this many times. Honest! I always get hats from the back, too.
