Let's Talk Monorails...

Ok, my wdw transportation system is this:
- have 3 express lines from MK to TTC to handle the crowds at park opening and closing much better than currently.
- keep the resort line, but make it paid or have to show your resort ID or ADR to get on. People paying 600 bucks a night should be able to get on their own monorail in comfort after the fireworks, period.
- have two lines running between TTC and Epcot
- have two lines running between Epcot and DHS
- have two lines running between Epcot and AK
- then have gondolas or driverless cars or whatever running from each park station to the resorts in that area
- the part I am still thinking about is how to handle Disney Springs. With other hotels right there it might be smart to keep it as bus service.

People that will pay $600 plus per night for 3 star accommodations because there is a monorail nearby should have one that takes them directly to the asylum.

I do have a question though when you say "lines" do you mean separate tracks or additional trains? Cause separate tracks would certainly be the ultimate in fantasy.

Yes I am saying seperate tracks, as in side by side like the resort and express are currently. Multiple tracks would be needed to handle the volume of people needing to get around. There already isn't enough capacity as it is, with huge lines going down the monorail ramp at MK in the evenings, even with 2 ferries running.

And I agree, the quality of the hotels doesn't warrant the pricing. They're only getting those prices because those are the only 3 hotels one quick monorail ride away from arguably the most visited theme park in the world.

Even though monorails may be expensive, I'd imagine they'd be cheaper and easier to install than subways and elevated trains, right?

Even then, I wouldn't worry too much about MULTIPLE LINES, so much as a train to service that line.

Small update for those curious about my endeavors! I've been asked to come for a face-to-face interview! It'll be sometime in 2 weeks, I need to set the date and time as soon as I'm sure I know when I can go! Super excited!

I was told by a few disney employees a few weeks ago, that NOT only are they not going to replace them until driverless is running well, but once driverless is going well there is a strong sense that they will allow people to sit in the front/back cars again... that would be my favorite news of the last 10 years

Whether they phase in new monorails, or refurb the current ones for all of this is not clear at this time per the people I talked to. But a big push to bring that front/back cab being open to public is being attempted I've been told.

Yes because we all know computers don't malfunction. ;)

When someone says driverless cars, I think of that Doctor Who episode where the cars are trying to kill you.

Just caught up on this 4-page thread. Would like to throw in my 2-cents here...

To me, the monorail is part of the culture at the Florida park. Always has been...and always should be. I'll never forget riding up front back in 1976 and it was a real thrill then. I have always just loved the monorail.

Disney should do whatever it takes not only to restore/modernize the current monorail system, but expand it to the other major parks (AK and HS) as well. Don't tell me it cannot be done. Disney could do most anything if they just put their mind to it.

And if Disney has the money to be building parks around the world...then I don't want to hear any static about it being too expensive or Disney cannot afford it. They just DON'T WANT to afford it. But they should!

Honestly freediverdude, here's what I would prefer:
  • Keep the Resort & Express Monorails
    • For the Express Beam I'd run it with 4 trains during AM and PM Rush (pre-park open to 11:00 AM, then from 2.5 Hours before close until park clear)
    • For the Resort Beam, I'd run 4 trains at all times
  • Keep the Epcot beam, but add a fourth train during AM and PM Rush (pre-park open to 11:00 AM, then from 2.5 Hours before close until park clear)
  • I'd build LRT (Light Rail) from AK to Epcot (which was planned at one time for WDW IIRC) with two stops, Blizzard Beach and Coronado Springs, and between PORS and DS (with stops at POFQ, SS, and OKW)
  • I'd also upgrade the existing Mark VI Monorails or replace them with new trains
  • I'd also make the monorail stations more user friendly with train arrival displays.

This may not be new, but it was new to me - I was on the monorail yesterday, and I noticed what looked like red reflector lights at the ends of each platform. They sort of look like:

Also, at Magic Kingdom station, I noticed what looked like sensors, as well as a beacon that flashed as the monorail slowed down and turned on when the monorail stopped. Does anyone know what these are? Are they part of the automation system?

Sounds good, except the hotel would be $1000 a night after all those upgrades, lol.

Agree with most of this ^. One idea would to be to eliminate resort monorails from stopping at TTC. Pre and Post park non-resort visitors overwhelm capacity of that line. Or have every third (fourth) train resort only. Others act as express only. Not to mention walking to CR to hop on Monorail that will stop at TTC, their destination anyway.

I could not agree with you more. The monorail is a major part of DW and DW history. I too can remember riding the monorail in 1977 when my wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Contemporary Hotel. We just came back from Disney in May (40th anniversary)and it was a shock to see how Disney has neglected the monorail system. Disney certainly has the funds (profits) to upgrade the system and increase the service to other resorts and increase rider capacity I can't imagine what the cost of running and up keep on all those buses are operating 12+ hours a day is. Disney just do it! If Walt were alive he would say the same thing.

I'd imagine it's all part of the automation system, but if not, it might be helping drivers with more precise stopping positions. I personally couldn't give you the correct answer though.
