Leaving to eat

I used to live in the area for almost 3 years. We would eat at Ale House, but it really is nothing more than a bar with good bar food. Some celebrety sightings though. Other than that, I do like Joe's Crab Shack and actually considered leaving property myself on an upcoming trip to visit there. Also Steak and Shake just bc I miss there cheeseburgers! And Bahama Breeze has a nice atmosphere. Do any of them have killer food? Not really. Good though. If you have a rental car and want to venture out, I would say check it out. It is an area chock fill of non-Disney fun. But if yo'd have to get a taxi, I can't say it is much worth the hassle.

OK, this seems like the kind of thread where I can make a statement and it'll enflame the masses and the thread will go on and on ... but I think that unless it is your first and/or only trip or you like to burn money, you are NUTS if you eat all your meals for a week or longer on WDW property.

But again, I am someone who can visit WDW without setting foot in a park for a few days and then only for a few hours.

There are so many places to eat of the chain variety right outside the DD entrance gates on 535 ... everything from McDonald's, Pizza Hut and Red Lobster to Chevy's, Denny's, Black Angus, Friday's, Hooters, Pizzeria Uno etc ... depending on whether you are driving you can reach many MUCH quicker than say staying at OKW and traveling to DAK Lodge to dine.

Beyond that, like 15 minutes up 535 and onto Sand Lake (as if you were going the back way to UNI) there are countless more upscale choices like Ruth's Chris, Samba Room, Timpano Chophouse and again, so many others.

I just can't see paying the Mouse for every meal, especially for crap like MK quick serve ... but I am not blinded by pixie dust.

The best food is on property. I ate at the Cheesecake Factory at the Mall at Mallania - it was not that great. But its nice to eat at non Disney fare sometimes.

I hear you but what is so special about those places? I am not suggesting that they are bad but if I am going to be bothered to leave then I want something really unique and good. I am sure that those types of place exist in and around WDW but they are hard to find when you are on vacation.

That is true... although I am sure Niceville has some good food...

and no..not everyone down south is used to great food..only us Nawlins folks..;)
I have to admit, Niceville has some things going for it. You can get a great fried oyster sandwich several places. And "Po Folks" makes a good "Po Boy" sandwich. And I must admit that I do miss hush puppies! Several larger restaurants here and in the nearby Ft. Walton Beach area will have a buffet with whole broiled grouper (yum!) and steamship round on Friday nights. But I just found out by looking at Google maps that my favorite Italian restaurant (Calabrese, actually) is now a "Los Rancheros".
Neither of you have taste, I mean you dont deep fry your pies, pizzas or Mars Bars or cook oatmeal and offal in a sheeps stomach. :lookaroun
Oh, my goodness, I really miss haggis for breakfast the way they make it in Edinburgh! And it's not offal, it's pluck! You know that! (I know, there's an overlap). Or for dinner with neeps and tatties and a dram!

The closest thing we have is scrapple, and I believe that IS offal! (And besides being offal, it's awful!)

And in the south they have chit'lin's! They don't even bother with the oatmeal!:ROFLOL:

While there are certainly countless choices outside of Dsiney, they are, in fact, just restaurants. Red Lobster, Chevy's, etc. are all over the US. The Disney restaurants are themed and no where else! I completely disagree with the idea that if it is your first visit, you should go off-property for some meals. I think it is just the opposite! Your first time you should immerse yourself in the Disney culture. After a few trips, then I would venture out.

We leave a lot to eat, my kids love the Golden Corral, I know, I know...its so touristy...but they love it there because there are a million things to choose from.

I have to second this-- If we are staying overnight- we will do this for dinner. It stays busy enough that the food doesnt sit and they are open late.
