By the way, I have a question: Are wedding parties always during the day up there in the US? Just curious...
I've only been to two in America and they were both day affairs.

In the UK it's very common for there to be a reception in the afternoon after the service. This is a full sit down multi course meal with the speeches. As it's an expensive deal numbers are usually limited, so it's close friends and family that attend.

Then in evening there will be a more relaxed party when the music will crank up and there will be a buffet. This is where all the rest of the friends will join in - though they are also welcome to go to the marriage ceremony too if the venue is large enough.

I can answer that one...weddings are my business.

Weddings usually last the entire day. Most of the time people get married in the afternoon and then have a reception (a big party) that night. So the "wedding" part is usually, but not always, during the day. If you have any more questions, I more than likely can answer them.

Ok, so it lasts the whole day.... I've always seen that in movies, but had never stopped to think about it. So, there is a wedding party during the day, and a bigger party at night??

Cool info, Barnum! So there are two celebrations, on the same day?

One celebration, split into two, well three I suppose.

Everyone welcome to the ceremony - though registry venues can be a little small.

Then an afternoon meal where all the speeches are made. Close friends and family only (unless there is a big enough budget)

Then an evening bash where all are welcome.

Venues can vary. Hotels are the most traditional venue for the party. My GF's sister is getting married this here - the do is going to be here:

Here it's just in the evening. The church service is usually about 7 PM, and then everyone goes to the party, that goes on until 3 AM. When there's little money, there's just a cake with champagne at the church salon, no party.

I married a Canadian, and when his brother got married last year, the ceremony was at 2 pm, with a reception lasting from 5 pm- 2 am. He said that was the norm for them. I WISHED my reception could have been that long. 5 hours was nothing for us. By the time we were finished speeches, taking family pictures, cutting the cake and visiting tables, it was about time for our last dance. We had no time to just hang out and dance. I feel like a year and a half of planning and we missed half our reception! Our guests had a fabulous time though.

Yes...it lasts the whole day. However, it's not so much of a party during the day. The actual wedding ceremony where the people get married happens during the day. And that is usually a church service. (Sometimes it's just a civil service though.) Then that night is the big party.

Wow...that's a late night!

For most Americans...the reception (party) is the big deal. People pay thousands and thousands of dollars for that. There's always dinner, a cake, sometimes alcohol, and there's usually a DJ or a band that is hired to play as well.

Keep an eye out in the chit chat thread...I'm getting married in a little over 6 weeks and I am more than likely going to have a post about it. I am actually doing things a little different than normal however, I am getting married in Jamaica, but I am having a reception back in my hometown a few weeks later.

People here pay a lot of money for the party too. Of course, not many people have money to pay for that, and most people end up having just a cake right after the service at church, or at home after the civil ceremony (if there's no church). I got married at a barbecue, but that's another story...

Wow!!!! You're getting married in Jamaica!!!!! How cool! Why are you getting married there?

Yep...I sure am. I'm getting excited about it too. It's going to be great!

The reason I chose to get married in Jamaica is because I photograph weddings a lot of Saturdays (probably about 20-26 every year) and as much as I hate to say it, everybody's wedding is the same. Everybody likes to think that their wedding is different and special and unique, but the aren't. They are all exactly the same. I wanted to get married in Jamaica because it's different (for me) and because it then wouldn't be like work. (I also choose to get married on the beach because I did a wedding with my dad a few years back where they got married on a beach in Florida-flew us down and everything-and it was absolutely beautiful. So ever since then, I knew that was what I wanted)

I guess for a comparison, it's like if you work in a restaurant, when it comes dinnertime, you usually don't want to eat in a place that you are at all the time...well, I have the same feelings about churches and reception halls. I don't want to get married in a place where I am at all the time. It wouldn't be special.

So...married at a Barbeque....I can honestly tell you, I have never been to that type of wedding!

 It's pretty common here in Brazil, specially for people who have no money at all, or are not REALLY getting married (which both describe my case...:zipit: ).
