Leave a Legacy vs Walk around the World

Call me a synic - but aren't we, the hard-strapped-for-cash-public actually paying for Disney to re pave their footpaths, the same members of the public who pay mega $$$ to use Disneys facilities ????????
I'll bet the guy who thought this idea got the keys to Disneys gold plated washroom.
I mean whats the point - you arrive early at MK, spend an hour looking for a brick with your name on it - then what - you're at the back of the line to get in. Then we find out that your brick might just not be there for eternity
OK if you live in Florida and can visit WDW whenever you want - but for me to take a 10 hour flight to look at a brick - GET REAL:veryconfu

We have a brick there, too - I'll bet you've all stepped on it as you exit the ferryboat! I will be EXTREMELY upset if it arrives in the mail! I sure don't remember reading ANYTHING about it being removable when we bought it in '95!

Now I cant get one...makes me wanna

But...I do go and look for the Illinois and Wisconsin bricks...to see if its any one I know....

A pile of bricks.

I was at the MK one morning last year when a crew was performing some needed repair on the brick walkway. The area was roped off and these guys were pulling up old and damaged bricks and replacing them with new ones. Most of the men on the crew did not speak English, however the crew foreman did speak English. I spoke with the foreman for about 10 minutes and learned a lot about the brick walkways. In short, he told me that with all the heavy pedestrian traffic, that the bricks do sometimes crack or become worn. These cracked and worn bricks cause several safety hazards. The most obvious is that a cracked or loose brick could easily become dislodged and become a trip hazard. Also, he told me that with the regular heavy rainfall that WDW gets, erosion of the soil and sand under the bricks can ruin the entire walkway if not repaired in a timely manner. In either case, the bricks are removed and replaced with new (blank) bricks. He told me that they generally do not reset old bricks. If the old bricks can be reused, they are cleaned up and saved in the maintenance yard (presumably for use on other projects). If the bricks are cracked, they are thrown away. The day I was there, about 50 bricks were replaced.

If you look at some of those bricks at the main entrance at MK, you'll see the years on them go as far back as 1996. I have one laying around there back in '97 when I proposed to my ex-fiancee come to find out that 3 months later.... we broke up. Oh well... HER loss ;) That just means more money for me to spend on "The Mouse" ;)

Mabey that is what they are trying to correct with Leave a Legacy. The Walk around the World was sort of a 2 in one thing: as long as they are putting in a bunch of bricks for people to walk on, why not let people pay to have one personalized? Unfortunately, the other reason for teh bricks (the fact that they are part of a walkway) kinda gets in the way, and they still have to be treated like any other walkway at Disney: when it gets old, they have to fix it.

With leave a legacy, the sole purpose was for looks. I dont know much about the pictures (although I do have one), but I am sure they made extra sure that these would survive a while, apparently at least 20 years.

I got a comp. tile at LaL and I need to use it up. I have until the 28th of this month.

I dunno, i feel weird about my face being on a rock at Epcot. Maybe i'll put in a text tile saying "Figgy wuz here" or something like that.

When I first got my tile, I had a grand plan to keep buying tiles and then having them "point" to other tiles with directions. Like, go see the tile located at 36B, 7c, 3A or something like that and you'd follow them until you got to the final tile with some grand message.. Ya know, for anyone with enough free time :)

So do I, nothing wierd with that! I had it made last year, but we just go to see it in March, and I was like, "Hey, I am a part of Epcot!"

Yes. I don't think anyone would accuse WDW of building these projects for the sake of aesthetics. Their motivation was deeper. Much deeper.

Exactly... back in 2001, me and my daughter had ours done and when we went back this year it looked great. Now, when she brings her kids to Disney for the first time, they will be able to see us as we appear now. Damn cool i think. But then again, i'm just one for nostaliga. I've also read where many on this board think they look like tombstones and want the OLD Epcot entrance back. Well, fine, if they will give us back the ENTIRE OLD EPCOT including World of Motion and Horizons and everything else lost, then ok.. i'll give up my picture..

That is a really nice thought, (really! I'm not being sarcastic!) but I'm fairly sure that the Legacys/tombstones won't be around then...

It really is a nice thought though! :)

just to clear up some things about bricks being removed....when u bought a brick, if it breaks or gets damaged, disney will replace it. but after ten years, they will not replaced a damaged brick, they will put some other persons brick there. for example, my family got a brick in september of 1994...if it was broken before, it's been replaced...if it breaks three years from now, someone elses brick will be put in the prime location right infront of the gates...

oh, and leave a legacy is the coolest thing...my sister and i have a pic next to my parents, next to my grandparents, next to my aunt. next year when my best friends and i go down for my graduation present from my parents, we're probably going to leave a legacy of your own!

Yes! This was always my understanding. Disney has no motivation to remove old bricks unless they become damaged. Better to just put new ones someplace else. The more, older bricks they have, and the more bricks they have overall, the better the whole concept works.

If you don't like the idea of having your face on a tile in Epcot, then you can write something special a add clip art to it.

Epcot added this feature in 2001 to help the sale of the Leave a Legacy tiles. It's king of like having a really, really small brick.

how much?

just curious.... how much did the bricks cost? how much do the tiles sell for? just something I never looked into, though I think it would be pretty cool.

Yeah, I'm interested in both of them also. If I ever get to go on my dream honeymoon I'm definately doing both as a couple and then, in the future, as a full family! :D
