Leave a Legacy Steals Souls!

An ounce of critical thinking.

How many people actually passed through the gates in over 8 years?
How many tiles were actually sold in over 8 years?

Based on attendance records, at least 70 million people passed through Epcot's turnstiles during the 8 years that LaL was for sale. If jt04 is correct that less than 0.01% purchased LaL tiles, then less than 70,000 tiles were sold during that time. I'd say it was far less than this, so if anything jt04 is over-estimating the amount of people who purchased tiles.

Exactly! The tombstones could only hold 750,000 pictures if all squares were sold. Many, many were given away. The walls are nowhere near full. Much of it is empty space.

Yes, but of those 70 million guests that entered the gates in those 8 years, how many of them were from different countries that didn't understand the LAL? Or how many of those people from different countries knew they weren't going to be back anyway so they figured "what's the use?" And how many of those 70,000 guests were children, mentally handicaped or had other hadicaps who had no say in the matter? Or even CM's who go every day? Or repeat guests, like myself, who, in 8 years, have been 15+ times and didn't feel the need to get more than 1 tile?

Just some food for thought.

Wow, they actually sold 550,000 of those things! That's a lot more than I guessed. I've never actually wasted my time looking at them so they must be a lot smaller than I imagined. Still that means over 99.2% of Epcot visitors since LaL opened did not purchase a tile. Now does that mean 99.2% of visitors hate LaL, of course not. But I bet a majority would vote that the tiles be moved somewhere else in order to restore Epcot's once majestic entrance or perhaps even a better entrance than before.

Yep, ya gotta take into account repeat guests. We've been several times as have other family members. Our family (extended family included) has at least 5 tiles that I know of but probably more because I have a LOT of cousins. I think a few put up tiles but I'm not sure so I don't count them. When they offered the granite etchings of the tiles 3 of us went in together and purchased 4 sets of coasters: my sons, my grampas Kilroy tile, my aunts, and my cousin on his honeymoon. We mixed them up so there were 4 sets of 4 different tile etchings. The 3 of us who paid kept a set and the 4th was given to my Gramma as a gift.

Yes, I think the granite walls clutter what used to be open, impressive space that really accentuated the scale of SSE. But I'm torn because I have sentimental investment in those walls. My babies are there. Every trip we make the boys can run straight to their tile and pick it out in less than a minute. And every trip we take a picture with them pointing to it. It's all sentimental value at this point.

I think moving them to the sides under the overhangs would be a great idea. That way it would clear the space again to allow better crowd flow yet still keep them near where they originated for those of us who have our loved ones there. Moving them would, however, generate a need for a new kiosk to assist with locating them. The LaL certificate thing they sent after your tile was purchased had the original location printed on it. I wonder if that lends to hesitation to make the decision to move them?

Moving them would also generate HUGE construction walls at the entrance to Epcot and will elliminate the Photo Pass for that area due to restricted views and all guests would be cattle-herded into a narrow passageway between the walls for months.

You can roll your eyes at these predictions but we all know it would be true.

Close thread?

Ok this is getting nasty now.

I also think the name of this thread is offensive and it being on the front page of news and rumors really throws a negative spin on things here. It's not even funny or funny/sarcastic. None of this is funny when you are talking about people dying and taking down their pictures that they thought would be displayed for 30 years. So what if people die? Almost all of the portraits hung in art museums are of dead people--should we burn those too?

Sherry.

Improve traffic flow? I thought most on here were advocating a return to palm tree filled flower beds? Or are these flower beds that can be walked through and the tress swung from?

As I've said before, I have no problem with the concept. If it wasn't in such a bad and ugly location I might would have considered buying one myself. But they just make the entrance so absolutely horrid. Take the tiles and move them over to the blank wall where the tvs used to be or something like that.

Also, keep in mind that of those 550,000 tiles that are filled, a large percentage of those were actually given away. Of the people I've talked to that have tiles, it seems more were given them than paid for them. That's of course by no means a scientific survey. I'd be interested in the real numbers though.

As I said before, and the picture I posted shows, "traffic flow" is a non issue. It is simply a red herring, trying to divert our attention away from the fact the only true arguement against LaL is the way it "looks'.

I would think that moving the tiles to a peripheral wall would remind people more of a war memorial* than the stones do now. There are better solutions.

*ie. Vietnam War Memorial.

Maybe not. Set up the new wall/viewing area to the side (of course that would be blocked off for a little bit). Remove the etched plates and move them during the night little as you go. Then when just the slabs are left roll in and remove 1 each night after hours. Yeah, it'd take some big equipment. But it's not impossible. And if work is being done in the area of just 1 slab at a time even if there was a little quadrant blocked off it wouldn't be the entire area. Also, photopass photographers can set up at an angle that could still get their pics without too much intrusion. Trust me. We had our family portraits done in the Magic Kingdom at the same time they filmed the Christmas parade. I've looked and looked at the proofs and the photographer was able to take all those pics without another person wandering in the background. It can be done.

I love the Vietnam War Memorial. It's beautiful and truly gives scale to the numbers of lives that were touched during that era. Thank God my father is not on The Wall. Dozens of his friends are along with a part of him he'll never have back and I'll never know.

I don't think it's the same. These are pictures, not names. The name of the project was Leave a Legacy. By displaying the tiles it's doing exactly what they said they would. Would the display be all that different from where they are now? I think any creative display would be appropriate for what Leave a Legacy is and was intended to be. I'm not picky or analytical. Just trying to think of solutions. :animwink:
