LeafsFan's Artisinal Cheese and Creme Brulee Trip Report March 31st - April 9th 2010

Well we got back from our trip very early Saturday morning, and now that a few days have passed I figured I’d begin the trip report. I am hoping to post daily. There probably will not be many pictures as I am technologically challenged. I’ll try to emphasize the positive aspects of the trip, but we had a few not so positive issues that will be addressed.

The Cast.

We have myself, a self described Disney Geek TouringPlans.com Len Testa type park commando, my DW of a similar type to myself, and my two 8 year old boys. As mentioned, one of my sisters in laws signed on about 3 weeks ago, and last week another sister in law, her husband, and their 11 year old son, and 13 year old daughter signed on last week. These people live in Ontario, and we do not get to see them often. Our resort was the Wilderness Lodge.

Day 1 March 31st

We woke this morning all ready to go to the airport, everything had been packed in advance and the kids just couldn’t wait to go. One worry was the weather. I could tell that where the airport was located might be foggy, which is a very common occurrence up here. As it turned out it was foggy enough that I was not confident that our flight would get out.

IMG_0614.jpg

Luckily we did, leaving St. John’s at around 12:45 pm. The 3 ½ hour flight to Toronto was pretty uneventful, except for the fact that I was stuck in steerage with the boys, while DW was enjoying salmon, red wine and coffee with Baileys up front!! I did manage to watch “Up in the Air” which was interesting. Toronto airport is crazy busy, and the 1 ½ hour connecting time that we had is tight as US customs has to be navigated before you board your US flight. It went well though, and before long we are on an afternoon flight to Tampa, where once again I am in steerage with the boys while DW is hobnobbing with the elite up front. On this leg I got to see the first half of Avatar. We arrived at about 7:00pm and was met by my mother and father, and my aunt and uncle who have places in Largo. We picked up our rental car, and drove to Largo getting there about 8:00 pm. We managed to get the kids in bed by 9:30, and we headed to bed early to get rested for the next day. SIL #1 flew into Orlando this afternoon from Ottawa, and SIL #2 and her family came in early this same morning from Toronto. They all used Magical Express with no problems. I believe they stayed in the resort that evening eating at Whispering Canyon Café.

Day 2 April 1st

DW and I were up before dawn, due to the excitement and the 1 and ½ earlier time zone (6 am in FLA is 7:30 am in NL). We had the kids up, fed, the car repacked and the GPS unit figured out early enough so that we could be on the road for 8:00 am. The drive took just under two hours, and was a pretty good drive. DW is a nervous passenger, and she did as well as she can on such a busy road. We arrived at the Wilderness lodge right at 10:00 am, got our bags on a cart and parked the car, little did I know that the car would not move again for a week until we left.

I had mentioned several days in advance to the in-laws that they should get to EPCOT as early as they could manage, and that we would call them when we got there to see if we could meet up. When we got the WL they were just sitting down for breakfast at Whispering Canyon Cafe, and I began to be concerned that this would be the pattern for the week. My brother in law, who can be very stubborn, stated that it wasn’t necessary to get there early. We were not able to get into our room but put our stuff into one of the other rooms and got ready to head to EPCOT. My family’s plan for the day was really just to have our lunch and dinner at EPCOT and probably spend the rest of the day at the pool. Having spent the last three Easter weeks in the World we knew how crazy the park would be, and we tend not to fight such crowds. As mentioned in the pre trip report, we tend to be there fore rope drop, tour heavily until about noon or 1 pm and then leave for the day.

After everyone was ready we headed to the bus depot to get the EPCOT bus. It came within 5 minutes and off we went. A point should be made here; Disney transportation was exceptional for us the entire week. The few times we got a little hung up it was the fault of our travelling companions. One point is that it was hot. Highs for the whole week were mid to high 80’s. We all got to the park just about noon, and it was pure madness. Now an extra complication had happened not long before our trip. SIL #2 has slipped on some ice and reinjured some old injuries, and she wasn’t very mobile, we suggested that she get a wheel chair in each park. This of course slowed our admission to the park.

Here is DW waiting to get rolling

My two boys are heading over to see their aunt in the wheelchair

We went to Test Track to see how bad it was. Standby was 120 minutes, and Fastpasses were quickly running out. The Fastpass time for us was no good as it was the same time as our evening ADR at Le Cellier. The other family dithered about what to do until the Fastpasses had indeed all been issued. DW and I then decided that touring was done for the day for us. I have mentioned that one of the goals of this trip was to see as many of the things we have not seen in our previous trips, so with that in mind we all headed over to Club Cool.

As it was April 1st I suggested everyone should try the Beverly, and it worked!! Man that stuff is vile, all I could think of was the worst medicine I had when I was a kid. BIL suggested it was meant to be mixed with some type of booze, I can’t imagine ruining even the worst rotgut with this stuff, Bleech!! It was decided that the families would split up. Our family along with SIL #1 and 2 went to our lunch time ADR at the Coral Reef and BIL and his two kids decided to skip lunch and brave the standby line at Test Track and maybe some other rides. BIL mentioned that having only four full days in their trip, they were going to try to get as much out of each day as they could. Silently I thought, “ouch”
Our meal was good, I remember we shared an appetizer for two we both had a fish entrée, which IIRC was fish of the day and was good, I remember having the butterscotch Crème Brulee which was great. I’d eat there again.

After finishing Lunch the four of us took the MK monorail, switched to the express monorail, and then took the boat over to the Lodge. It was an interesting trip but not as quick as the bus. We were then able to get into our room; I spent time getting our stuff, and DW gooped up the kids with sunscreen before I took them to the main pool at around 3:30. The room was the typical WL standard room with the queen beds. In 2007 and 2009 we had stayed at the two Port Orleans resorts and had liked them very much. We found the moderate rooms quite nice. When we booked the WL we were looking forward to the bigger rooms, not that we needed them, but as a perq. We found after being in the room for a week that while the rooms are bigger on paper, the arrangement of the room is not as efficient at the WL. The actual living space the beds occupy seems to be no bigger than the Port Orleans rooms. Don’t get me wrong, the rooms were very nice, just no better than the Port Orleans rooms. We then spent two or three hours at the main pool. The pool was beautifully themed, and the kids loved it. I loved the number of Disney Lifeguards around it. It was crowded, and in many respects it reminded me of the Old Man Island pool at POR. I was pretty sure that for many of the afternoons to come we would be in the quiet pool. Just before we were to get out of the pool and get ready to go back to EPCOT for dinner at Le Cellier, the rest of our party returned from EPCOT. They had ridden Test Track, and Nemo, and Journey into Imagination. They then proceeded to go to the pool even though they were getting close to their ADR time at the Biergarten.

We headed back to EPCOT and made our ADR at Le Cellier. DW had the mussels followed by the Filet, and the Mousse. I had the Caesar salad, followed by the Filet and the Maple Crème Brulee. My meal was one of the highlights of the culinary week. We left the restaurant, just in time to catch Illuminations, which I love. After the show we were supposed to meet the others at the Canadian pavilion. I was unsure if the others had even come back, and our cell phone was dead. We hung around for a while, and then decided to leave as we were all exhausted. We had found out that it was an extra magic evening, so we decided to check out future world and do a ride, just to allow the hordes to leave before we headed out to the bus. As it turned out we got onto Nemo with no wait, went to see Turtle Talk for the first time, and got into Spaceship Earth for the first time. This left Test Track and Journey into Imagination on my “to do” list, and we were scheduled to come back to EPCOT two more times. The park had mostly cleared by now, and we had no trouble getting the bus. As a matter of fact one was there when we got the assigned areas. This was to happen many times. We ran into the others back at the lodge. They got to the Biergarten just before it closed, and they managed to get some food, but the entertainment had ended for the evening. We got back to our room and went to bed, after what was a pretty good day.

Zapata's on Bates Hill between Duckworth and New Gower has the best Mexican food in St. John's.

Yes the temp went from too cold to borderline too hot in just a week or so.

Great TR and a beautiful family. Sorry to hear about the extended family woes and glad you could make the best of it :)

I think hitting the beach AFTER Disney was excellent ... If I could have done things over, it would be Disney first, beach after

Just as a last post before signing off I have a few nuggets of advice for people planning a trip.

Accommodations

DW and I both like the WL, but I am not sure that we would choose the WL over a moderate such as POR again. We got a discount on WL in January and that persuaded us to give the WL a try. We had been planning to get a room in building 18 or 19 in the Alligator Bayou section of POR, after scoping it out last year when we stayed at the Magnolia Terrace. If we were to keep going to the World on yearly visits, this is where we would return. Here is a brief summary of why we feel this way.

We found that the WL rooms felt no larger than in the POR. The smaller POR rooms are better laid out IMO. The balcony was just used as a clothes drying area. We could see the fireworks from our standard room, but the noises from the electric transformers, and the heat, kept the sliding doors closed all the time.

The pools are similar in both so that’s a wash.

The extraordinary theming of the WL doesn’t make the extra cost worth it IMO.

I liked Whispering Canyon Café, but that combined with Roaring Fork is not appreciably better than the Riverside Mill Food Court. Artist’s Point is the only signature restaurant I would not try again.

We had also thought about staying sometime at a monorail resort. We have similarly thought about an EPCOT area resort. If we were to splurge on a deluxe again I am 95% confident it would be the Yacht or Beach club. We just love the World Showcase, and would love being an easy walk from there on a future trip.

Disney Transport

The only factor where WL is superior to POR is in certain aspects of the Disney Transport.

The biggest one in my mind is that when you come out of a park, there will not be so much of a crowd to get back to the Lodge. It is a small resort, and you will be back quicker. We often found a bus waiting when we exited a park.

The boat is a convenience in a limited manner. I liked it when you are leaving the MK, you can walk to the dock, which is a shorter walk, and the boat back is relaxing. If you are in a hurry, the bus to and from the MK to the Lodge is a quicker proposition than the boats. Busses to the other parks are no better than at POR. POR buses often make stops at other POR stops; WL buses will stop at either FW, or GF

It’s a close call for us but we would not stay at the Lodge again. POR would suit us just fine. This is not to suggest that you not try it, but just that we would rather spend less at POR or for that matter POFQ.

There is one less than obvious positive factor if you stay at the Lodge. As you know if you are travelling from resort to resort you have to use a park or Downtown Disney as a hub where you transfer. Since you are so close to the MK by bus, you can get to the MK very fast, and there are, I am sure, more busses returning to the resorts from the MK than the other parks. I think that resort to resort travel is very quick at the WL and about as good as it gets via bus.

Dining

We had used the superior DDP in 2007, and the inferior 2009 version, so we had some experience before using the DxDP this year. People complain sometimes that there is too much food, and there can be for sure, but my only real complaint is that having all these dining credits promotes the idea of booking a whole pile of table service meals. We quickly found that the extra time taken from the day to eat lunch time became tiresome. We ended up eating at a table service only two mornings and four lunches. I am sure that using the DxDP credits for counter service is not economical. I think that if we are to go back anytime soon we would either use the DDP or the Tables in Wonderland card and pay OOP. The boys will be 10 or over by the time of the next trip, so that factors in our choice to drop DxDP for next time.

For specific reviews I can give the following

Thumbs up to
Coral Reef
Le Cellier
Grand Floridian Café
Yachtsman
Whispering Canyon Café
Les Chef de France
Flying Fish Café
Narcoosee’s

Thumbs down to
Tusker House
Artist’s Point
San Angel Inn

Thank you for reading what has been a rather long TR. I apologize for what might have come across as a negative TR. I am very much a Disney fan, I will be back, but it may be further down the road that I would prefer. I would have loved to post a sunshine and light style TR, but this trip did not develop in a manner where such a report would have been honest. I hope you have derived some useful information, which will help you in you trip planning.

P.S.

It might be a while before we get back to the world as we have just bought this.

now that you have the camper you need to come to Ft. Wilderness!!! it might be a looooong drive for you, but it'd be a great trip report to read:)

I'm enjoying catching up with your TR. One thing I thought I'd comment on though was the expiration of FPs. Just FYI, the expiration time on FPs is pretty meaningless. We use expired FPs pretty regularly. Obviously, you can't use them early. But you can always use them after they expire (same day of course).

Just thought you might want to know so you don't worry about missing your FP window in the future.

We thought about it that day, but we were more in a pool mindset by the time we got out of Chefs du France.

It's interesting how different our experiences were with Disney Transport, isn't it?

It's a four day drive, assuming you can handle 14-16 hour days, I can't imagine how long it would take towing that. I think Concierge at GF for a couple of weeks would be cheaper than the gas that would take.

Yeah, it really was. Especially since we stayed within a few days of each other.

As you pointed out on my TR, a big part of that was that we had little kids and a double stroller. If I didn't have to haul, fold and unfold that thing around, the busses wouldn't have been as big of a deal. And if the kids handled the busses better (especially the 1-year-old) my wife would have had more patience with them.

I expect that on our next trip (which will be a few years out) the busses won't be much of an issue even if the service is the same as it was on this trip. Our circumstances will have changed to a point that it shouldn't be as big of an ordeal.

You had all my sympathies dealing with your in-laws. I've thought about planning a big family trip like that. But invariably it falls apart at the early planning stage. And I'm always glad for it. If it ever actually came together, I'm sure the experience would be every bit as frustrating as yours.

I did find some of your comments about being tired and not quite satisfied interesting. Like you, we did lots of fun stuff. And we had a good time. But we came back with a bit of a sense of disappointment. Disappointment probably isn't quite the right word. But I can't quite put my finger on it even a month later.

I think its just a sense of opportunity lost. I was so looking forward to doing things like spending hours in World Showcase, checking out places I have heard of in various podcasts, but I never got to do these things. I also have enjoyed the sensation of being at a place like DHS just after rope drop and wandering the Streets of America with no one else around. Never had that sensation once.

These things have influenced what we'll do in the future. Our next trip, whenever it is will probably be the second week in November to experience low crowd level, and we will be without extended family for sure.

I think you've put your finger on it.

Next time for us, the kids will be quite a bit older. We may rent a car. Budgets (and discounts) will determine whether or not we stay on site again.

I wish we could go during the off season. I love going to WDW in the fall. But I don't want to pull Joey out of school. So, we'll probably brave spring break again next time.

Here's to next time! :sohappy:

Going in November will mean that DW and I, being teachers, will have to take a week of unpaid leave, which we will have to budget for. This is my concern. Choosing to go on the week of November 11th will allow me to only have to take 4 days off as we get November 11th off.

Sounds like a plan!

Any idea how long before the next trip?

I expect at least 3 years before we go again. Maybe longer. I wouldn't want to go again until the baby is at least 40-inches and can meet most of the height requirements. But even after that, the wife may not be ready.

It depends,

I'd say at least three years, by then I should have enough air miles to go for nothing. It could be longer, it might be shorter. With DW hating winter, all it will take is a harsh winter, and I'll be catching her checking rates!!
