Le Cellier vs. non-Disney High-End Steakhouse

So, I didn't book Le Cellier back when we hit our 180 days b/c we have so many top notch steak houses to choose from locally - i.e. DH didn't see the need to go for steaks at Disney when we've got so much out of this world steak right here. The recent negative reviews helped further his opinion- and we are very picky with steak. We also sometimes buy steers at auction ($ helps kids pay for college) - and when you've got a freezer with 500-1000+ lbs of beef- you learn to make a steak like the high end pros. i know Le Cellier is the best bang for your buck as far as a dining plan credit goes- BUT I'm really just looking at food quality and keep wondering if I'm missing out on something. :hammer:Our fave local steakhouse is run by a Le Cordon Bleu chef who has cooked for US presidents- so it's pretty fabulous stuff. It's not something we do all the time- but it's nice to have that restaurant (among many other greats) locally.:slurp:

So, how would you compare Le Cellier to a non-Disney end steakhouse with famed chefs where you pay $50-100pp at least?

Shula's is a high end steakhouse on or off property and very good, Capitol grille is also in this range. Le cellier is not in that class.

I have said this before but, IMHO the top steakhouses on property are;

Shula's
Yachtsman
California Grille or Jiko

The next level would be
Le Cellier

We tend to be picky about the steaks we eat also....and we have been putting Le Cellier off for quite a while. We tried it back around 2003/04 and were not happy with our meal at all...could have been that we all were tired and it was late...after 9 pm, kids DD (young at the time) did not care for anything on the menu and we were still new with Disney and did not know how good they are about asking for changes to side dishes and leaving off sauses. But over years our taste buds have grown and we are going to give it a try again during our trip in 31 days. So I will take notes and pictures and will let you what we thought when we get back!!!

Shula's and Yachtsman would be the high end steak houses on property that would be on par with the typical Ruth's Chris or Morton's. Le Cellier is like Outback kicked up a notch.

There is no comparison between Le Cellier and a non-Disney high-end steakhouse. Le Cellier is not in the league of a Shula's, Morton's or Ruth's Chris. Moreso, it totally pales in comparison to the many excellent non-chain steakhouses like Bern's in Tampa (my personal favorite), Ben Benson's in New York City, etc.

Le Cellier is very hard to get reservations for because of two things:

1) it is relatively small
2) it is a good value on the Disney Dining Plan because it is a steakhouse
but it costs only one dining credit

However that doesn't make it a great staekhouse. It is a good place to eat but far from great. However for dining plan fans (I am not one) it is a great use of one table service credit.

Le Cellier is definitely not a high end steakhouse. Like others have said, it is popular because it has steak and it comes at a fairly reasonable price with only one credit on the dining plan. However, I feel that if you are paying out of the pocket, the restaurant is a bit overrated.

We do the DP and I've eaten at LCS because I do like their food (bacon soup) but not because of the steak. Right before we make our ADR my husband and I sit down and glance at the menus to see what they have. We like to try different things that we normally don't eat. We can have steak/ribs/chicken/hamburgers anytime. Of course menus change but we always find something we like. Now we've got to look at kids meals because we do have children with different taste buds so we take that in consideration as well.

I've eaten steaks from Ruth's Chris to Shula's to a local place in Seymour, WI called Bricks. Guess which steak was the best? That's right - Bricks. I don't ever judge on the place - it's all about how it tastes when it comes off the grill. I once had a steak at Texas Roadhouse - that's right, Texas Roadhouse - that was better than Ruth's Chris.

Le Cellier, for me, has always been top notch. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed and the food has been delicious. People tend to say it's "over-rated", but obviously thousands go there every year and enjoy their food, no matter if this is the only steakhouse they've ever been to, or have tried steakhouses all over the world. So if you're a "steak snob" :), then you'll probably find some complaint. But if you're going to simply enjoy good food, you shouldn't find a problem.

Just tried it for the first time on our recent trip, and while the sides were delicious, our steaks were awful. Not even just average...they were terrible. Maybe we were just there on a bad night, maybe we ordered wrong (we got the New York strips)...who knows. We've had steaks at Narcoosee's and Artist Point that were 100 times better.

Thank you!!! I am feeling soooooo much better about not booking Le Cellier. I'm sure it's good and we'll try it at some point- and after reading everyone's posts- maybe comparable to Saltgrass that we have here in Texas (in the same class as Outback, but we like it a bit better). We can be steak snobs - LOL  but we're not exclusively snobbish about it- i.e. we don't always do high end fine dining steak. I just hated that feeling that maybe I was missing out on something mind blowing considering how often Le Cellier is discussed in various posts and articles. I guess I might treat DH to Shula's if there's time and tables available...although he is already getting breakfast with Stitch. Not quite the same as a phenomenal steak cooked to perfection, but he is quite fond of experiment 626. :ROFLOL:
