I know this is a Disney board but for those who have been to Las Vegas please help me...

I am traveling to Vegas with my boyfriend April 13th until the 20th - we are going for Miss USA 2009. Anyway, for those who have been to Vegas, do you recommend renting a car? I have read that driving in Las Vegas is terrible. We are staying off the strip. Also, how is the parking at the casinos? Any other info you can tell me would be appreciated. This is my boyfriends first trip to Vegas and my 2nd (but 1st since I have been 21).

Off strip, get a car. On strip, no need. We were just out there for a few days this past week and never needed a car...we must have walked 10 miles a day, but it was good.

Use valet at the hotels...don't ever park yourself as it is too much of a pain.
Let me know if you need other info...I am out there a couple times a year

We have stayed on the strip with a car. You need a car if you are staying off strip. Most hotels have parking ramps or plenty of parking. Circus Circus and Luxor I know for a fact have ramps. There's at least one ramp near Fremont Street downtown. Warning though, the traffic up and down Las Vegas Blvd at night can really be a pain.

I just came down and signed on the boards specifically to ask this same question!!

Taking DD19 & her BF20 (he's from Ireland) to Vegas over their spring break the 2nd week in March. Would have liked to take them to WDW but having just returned in December, jut couldn't swing it financially. Got a REALLY good deal on this Vegas trip.

I have never been, and we are staying at the Luxor. I signed up for the Gray Line transfer from the airport, and was hoping I could get away with not renting a car. I don't like driving in traffic in strange places, and we don't mind walking. Sounds like we'll be fine.

The Luxor is nice, we saw a show there. I couldn't force myself to ride the elevator to the top floor in the main building though. The Luxor isn't far from the airport, and if I remember right it connects to the monorail.

If you need a free place to park that is easy to access, the Bellagio is the place to be. My friend used to live right outside of Vegas, and we used to park there for free when we hung out on the strip; it's centrally located, which makes for a convenient drop off for the rental.

I am staying at Tahiti Village which is about 2 miles away from Mandalay Bay. I want to Rent a car (I like the convenience) but at the same time, I do not want to waste money. How is the Duece Bus or public transportation?

You should be fine. Several hotel/casinos (Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, New York New York, Excalibur, Monte Carlo) are within easy walking distance.

I ususally stay at the Luxor...but last time I got a great deal a Bally's. I think I am hooked on staying in the middle strip now. Luxor is a fun hotel, and the ones around it provide plenty of variety. Mandaly bay, Excalibur, New York New York, MGM, Monte Carlo...all are fun. Do not miss the Bodies exibit at Luxor, it is worth every single penny.

If you want to go to the far middle side of the strip (Wynn, TI) it is going to be a bit of a hike, but it is worth it. Don't miss Strip Burger at the Fashion Show Mall while up there, either. Yum, yum!!

The monorail can be caught at the MGM. The rail at the Luxor only takes you between the 3 casinos right there...Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Excalibur

Duece is okay and runs $7 a person a day, I beleive.

Some things not to miss for all of you:

Cirque Du Soleil's Ka at MGM
Mon Ami Gabi at Paris - you can sit outside and have a wonderful meal and watch the Fountains at Bellagio
The Fountains at Bellagio
Blue Man Group
Le Burger Brasserie at Paris - they have a $777 burger...check it out.
La Creperie at Paris - I know, I know...I am addicted to Paris, but those are the best crepes ever!!

More later

There is no need for a car. You will walk to a majority of the places, or take a bus/tram.

Where are you going to be staying? Try to be onstrip, the Rio, Palms and Hard Rock may be tempting but you won't be able to get to places as easily. I stayed at the Flamingo last time and that was a great location and good price. I also like the Mirage. MGM is really good because it has the tram right behind it.

I'm very familiar with Vegas as I used to go there at least once a month for work, and have been going there at least once a year for over 10 years. With that, I can tell you that Tahiti Village is still not terribly far from the Strip. If you are only planning to hang out at either the Strip or your hotel, and you will not be going back and forth very frequently, then I'd recommend just taking cabs. Over the course of the week, you'll likely pay less than you would for a car, plus you won't have to hassle with driving around on the Strip and parking. Parking in Vegas can really be a pain because it's usually a long walk between the parking garage and hotel/casino. If you take cabs, then you'll always get dropped off right at the front door. Also, traffic along the Strip can get really bad between all the cars and all the pedestrians. Cab drivers know all the back roads and shortcuts.

You're correct that it's not far from the airport, but it's not on the monorail line (at least not the one that you're likely thinking of). The one that's at the Luxor only runs between Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Excalibur.

Having said that, I would never look at the monorail as a selling feature. It's not like at Disney, where hotels on the monorail line are an extra perk. In Vegas, you walk about as far from the monorail station to the hotel as you do from one hotel to the other. The Vegas monorail was a long awaited project that was really poorly planned. Not worth it.

I always rent a car in Vegas, just because it's usually so cheap and I like to be able to go see things beyond my general vicinity. By the way there is a small shopping mall on Las Vegas Blvd a little ways past Tahitti Village that has a great Disneyland outlet store. They usually have some great Disneyland items at very good prices.

I was thinking about the short line that connects the 3 hotels. I couldn't remember if it even went across the street to New York, New York. I have never been on the long one on the other side of the street.

really. thanks for the heads up. I have decided to rent a car - the price is $114 but the vegas taxes are horrible (an additional $70). But I am going to Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon. I figure a car may keep me from the casinos (a good thing) that way I can sightsee instead. I am limiting my gambling money.

Thanks for all the replies, too. A guy I work with just came back from Vegas yesterday, and he brought me a bunch of magazines and maps, so we'll have a good time the next couple weeks planning out our days. Got some pretty good coupons; once for 10% off @ the Disney outlet.

We did score free Cirque De Soleil tickets when we booked our pacakage, so we're going to try and get in to see Cris Angel (he's at the Luxor.)
