Laptop Shutting Down Question

One Little Spark...
OK - I've had my Chromebook since Christmas and have just now figured out how to print from it without physically connecting to my non-wireless printer at my desk. Just a little geeky moment....

I debated putting it on my desktop at home, but I have to experiment with my gaming rig when it comes to the OS. I'll install it a day or two after the official launch.

I'd keep it off a gaming system until the official release (and even after, given MS's history of OS releases), but it's quite solid.

I know this will sound stupid, but what exactly is bios? I am as illiterate as they come when it comes to computers (hence the reason searching Google for my problem was no help...plenty of answers...none I could understand). Yes, I'm that sad at knowing this stuff.

Thanks thought, I'll check the HP website.

BIOS stands for basic input/output system. The BIOS will initialize and test the system hardware components, and will load an operating system from a hard drive. The BIOS also provides somewhat of a unified point for all of the hardware to communicate with each other. It is stored on a chip on your motherboard. When you update the BIOS, you are flashing a new set of instructions to this chip.

To put it in human terms, the BIOS is section of your brain that controls your breathing ,heart, etc.

That is what I head and I have been tempted to give it a whirl, but I keep reminding myself ow hat happened when I downloaded a BETA of Windows 2000 13 years ago.

2000 was great compared to NT 4.0!

But, it was terrible for games. Better off with ME at that time...

The main issue I had with 2000 was it was a 64 bit OS and absolutely no one had written 64 bit drivers for it. I had a PC full of name brand hardware and the device manager was full of little yellow exclamation marks.

We may be talking past each other, but...considering I rolled it out to over 3k machines on a military network...sorry, no. It wasn't limited to a 64 bit OS. In fact, I had very few compatibility issues with it moving from 4.0.

Oh I know that was not the only thing. It was just the big road block I hit. I expected to have some driver issues, but when you can not find a working driver for anything except your motherboard it is game over. I had to do a format and re-install of Win 98. Not a fun weekend.

It was a rough transition.

You can probably download the bios on the HP site and it will have a windows installer with it...pretty much just double-click it...you really shouldn't need a tech...

Except if you're really not sure what you're doing, you should be careful when messing around on the bios
