Yep I've seen one up close. Theyre cool but I think the body material was a major flaw. Wasn't it like stainless steel or something? Touch it and leave permanent finger prints lol.

I know DMC knows a thing or two about delorians. At least I wouls hpe so because of his name lol.

Cool...stuff I know alot about....:D

Josh is right......
The Skin of the Delorean is made out of stainless steel grade 304.....with a GPM (Fiberglass, plastic, mold injected shell), on a Lotus (Esprit) Frame....

good stuff...the problem was....fingerprints....they show up everywhere and stick out like a sore thumb....no pun intended...you have to wipe it down alot....but the prints wipe off pretty easy...:)

DuPont made a line of paints for the DeLorean stainless....every DMC that left the factory was 100% stainless ...NO PAINT!!!

The paint was an add on, dealer option.....actually...I am not a big fan of the painted Deloreans....and....it brings down the value to...so it is pointless to paint one...I think....though I almost bought a high gloss black one last year in Detroit...but I said "nah"....and I am still saving up for one.

I also seen another one last fall at a Ford Dealership buy my house.....I made an appt. to go over it with a fine tooth comb and make him an offer....so I did...there were alot of things wrong with it....alot of it was the orig Belfast factory issues back in 81-early 82..meaning...it needed an electrical upgrade...rear louvers were all busted up....gulling wing doors needed new struts and possible torsion bar adjustments....not alot of frame rust....but there was some....it was not worth what the guy was asking for it...I made and offer and I told him what it needed and that he would never get the price he was asking for it cause it was not mint.... Then I asked for a test drive and the sales idiot got all rude with me....and said:

"Well you buyin it tonight? How you gonna pay for it?"
Really really mean....

so I said forget it...and I will take my money elsewhere...I called him on alot of lies...and he figured out I was not "another sucker" and that I knew alot about Deloreans...and he got all ed off......

Soooooo, I'm still savin up! :)

How much does a Delorean in good shape with necesary upgrades go for?

Also wasn't Delorean (the guy) in some sort of trouble? They featured the Delorean on Historys Greates Blunders on the History Channel a while back I only caught the end so I don't know the story. I've loved 'em since I saw Back to the Future when I was little. If I had a chance to buy one and could afford it I would go for it...provided it comes with the flux capacitator. :D

Josh,

John DeLorean's story is a long one.... I have all the books on the man and the car....I will try to keep this short.;)

In the Early 80's there was a terrible recession here in the states, which was not a good thing for a start up sports car company.

John Z Delorean's company set up shop in a Belfast, Ireland suburb.

Now...the British Government gave him tax cuts and the land dirt cheap...and some start up funds...if he set up shop in Belfast...to give some 2,000 (at first 2,000...5,000 about 3 years later) Protestants and Catholics jobs in that war torn part if the nation....

Long story short..the company was doing very well...but the riots and bombings at the plant sent the company one huge step backward... Margaret Thatcher was not pleased to say the least...and would not give the company any more money...and was furious of the fact that this American was doing so well..on essentially British soil..and money...

John had paid back most of the loans to the British...but..get this...the British would not let him pay the less than $1Mill back he owed...and John Had $38Mil in the bank at the time! So, the British government took the company over and sent DMC into receivership.

John was desperately looking for more money and investors to buy his company back from Maggie Thatcher...Lots of leads, but came up empty....Then..the FBI set him up....One alleged investor promised to bail out DMC for 40 mil from the British government.

This "investor" was a FBI lackey.... they were to have a meeting at a hotel in LA.... to do the paperwork...and get the company back! Well John Gets to LA..to do the deal...and the Lackey has a brief case full of cocaine....not money...FBI barges in...and accuses John of buying $40mil of coke....John fought and fought and had his day in court...he won....it was FBI entrapment! Meanwhile...Margaret Thatcher KILLED DMC! She took the dies from the auto plant...and threw them into the bottom of the ocean...so no one could ever revive the DeLorean Motor Company… and …..put the Irish out of work.
This has been proved and there are pics of this!

If John had set up shop in Detroit...I think DMC would still be in business today...but then he would have had huge issues in the beginning with his former employer, GM.....but that is another story.

Sorry If I got wordy…and board you..;)

The History Channel special by Rodger Mudd was very one sided and bias against J.Z. Delorean...I saw it and it was very poor.

Well...you can get a good daily driver Delorean for about $13-15,000 on eBay...but alot of those DMC's on eBay are a bit shadey....you really gotta know your stuff..(VIN Numbers...dates of Manufacturing...when it rolled off the assembly line...what upgrades and things were caught and fixed at the plant...and here in the states...ugh...alot... )

DMC Houston www.delorean.com sells completly refurbished DMC's starting at about..oh..30 grand.... and thats all the upgrades ..and totaly flawless...

There is also DeLorean One in Southern California...but they are smoking crack big time!..they want like 65-70k!!

A project delorean...no updates,...been sitting in storage for 10 years, goes for about 5,6,7grand..talking alot of work!.

I am looking for a happy medium DMC...not too much work...but not a flawless $35,000 show car either.....a Nice daily driver...that needs some work that I can do:) and Maybe down the road...throw a Caddy NorthStar V-8 in it :)

I have 2 cars on my list...I have a 2001 Silverado right now and I love it...along with my "Herbie" project car.

I (within the next 4-5 years) would like to restore either a 427 Cobra or a 1968 Shelby GT500. (oh...and not because of Gone in 60 Seconds...it's been one of my favorite cars since I was about 10)
