King Kong's Coming Back To Orlando
By Terry Reynolds | FLA USA Staff Writer
Posted April 1, 2003

Kongfrontation coming back to Universal Studios? That is what
Universal Orlando President Bob Gualt said in a press conference
yesterday. “We had planned to create a Mummy themed rollercoaster to
replace Kongfrontation, but with the entire fan fare we seen on
September 8, 2002 and all of the hundreds of thousands of letters
persuading us to keep the King, we have decided to give the fans what
they want.“ This was shocking news to many theme park insiders. “I am
very surprised to hear this news, I know many people wanted Kong to
stay but I think more people wanted Mummy to come in“ said Theme Park
Analyst Jeffery Thomas. Bob Gaul went on to talk about the King Kong
re-make scheduled to open in 2005. “It was a factor for us; we had no
idea when we had decided to close the ride that a remake was on the
way, it was just fortunate enough we had not gotten any major work
done.“ When asked what will the new Kongfrontation Ride be like? He
replied “Unlike any other ride in the world, it won't be a calm tram
tour; it will be a multi sensory indoor rollercoaster with a state of
the art animatronic King Kong.“

Is this a smart move? Most theme park analysts we talked to seemed to
think it is. “Well King Kong is and will always be a classic icon for
Universal as is E.T. but, most fans really didn't want to see Kong
go, and on September 8th, you had some 10,000 plus annual passholders
out there cheering for King Kong so I don't think his time passed to
get rid of him. The golden rule is keep the public happy, if the
public demands it, do it.“ said Kevin Coling of Theme Park Insider.

Yeah, now this ISN'T a joke! :)

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Five-time Academy
Award(R) nominee Peter Jackson will direct "King Kong" for Universal
Pictures, it was announced today by Stacey Snider, Chairman,
Universal Pictures. Jackson will begin work on the film immediately
following the release of "The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The
King," the third and final installment of his blockbuster trilogy
based upon the writings of J.R.R. Tolkien. Jackson will write the
screenplay with his partner Fran Walsh and "The Lord Of The Rings" co-
writer Philippa Boyens. Jackson and Walsh will produce the film under
their WingNut Films banner. Universal Pictures will release "King
Kong" worldwide in 2005.
Jackson will bring his sweeping cinematic vision to the iconic story
of the gigantic ape-monster captured in the wilds and brought to
civilization where he meets his tragic fate.
The screenplay by Jackson, Walsh and Boyens is based on the original
story by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace, which became the classic
1933 RKO Radio Pictures film, directed by adventurers Cooper and
Ernest B. Schoesdack. The RKO "King Kong" has been designated by the
National Film Registry of the United States Library of Congress as
one of the 100 Greatest Films and chosen by that organization for
permanent preservation as a national treasure.
Jackson will employ the latest motion picture technology to
cinematically portray the timeless tale of the beast and his beauty.
He will expand on the chapters of the tale that take place in the
mysterious and dangerous jungles of Skull Island, and his Kong
promises to be a unique and breathtaking creation. As with his "Lord
of the Rings" trilogy, Jackson will shoot "King Kong" on location in
his native New Zealand. The visual effects will be again accomplished
by his New Zealand-based company Weta, Ltd., who have twice been
honored with the Visual Effects Oscar(R) for their work on "The Lord
Of The Rings." They will supplement practical locations in creating
primordial jungles and '30s-period America.
"No film has captivated my imagination more than 'King Kong.' I'm
making movies today because I saw this film when I was 9 years old.
It has been my sustained dream to reinterpret this classic story for
a new age," Jackson stated. "The story of Kong offers everything that
any storyteller could hope for: an archetypal narrative, thrilling
action, resonating emotion and memorable characters. It has endured
for precisely these reasons and I am honored to be a part of its
continuing legacy."
Snider noted, "Peter Jackson is a filmmaker uniquely capable of
capturing the core appeal of enduring classics and in expanding the
visual language of motion pictures, as inarguably evidenced in his
landmark achievement with the 'Lord of the Rings' films. We are
thrilled to be working with Peter and Fran, and we are confident that
their execution of 'King Kong' will amaze moviegoers. Anyone who has
seen the first two installments of 'The Lord of the Rings' knows that
Peter will bring Kong to life as a real character. His vision for the
tragic tale of the misunderstood creature, with its poignant
character development and technological wonder, will make 'King Kong'
compulsory viewing for any real movie lover."
Peter Jackson made cinematic history with "The Lord of the Rings,"
becoming the first person to direct three major feature films
simultaneously. Released in 2001, the first film in the trilogy, "The
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," was nominated for 13
Academy Awards, including Best Director, and won four. The film also
received the American Film Institute's prestigious Film Award and was
nominated for 12 awards from the British Academy of Film and
Television Arts (BAFTA), winning awards for Best Film and garnering
Jackson the David Lean Award for direction. In addition to four
Golden Globe nominations, the film also received numerous
distinctions and awards around the world. The second
installment, "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," earned six
Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. It won two Oscars
and two BAFTA Awards. The final installment, "The Lord of the Rings:
The Return of the King," will be released this December.
Jackson and Walsh previously received widespread acclaim for their
1994 feature "Heavenly Creatures," which was awarded a Silver Lion at
the Venice Film Festival and an Academy Award(R) nomination for Best
Screenplay. Other film credits include "The Frighteners" starring
Michael J. Fox, the adult puppet feature "Meet the Feebles," the
mockumentary "Forgotten Silver and Braindead."

Which, despite the April Fools Joke that opened this thread, makes for an interesting topic as to Universals timing in getting rid of KONG...

Good point. It was sad to see Kong go and I would have loved for Universal to house Mummy in a different building. Although this reminds me of when Mr. Toad was closed and I almost cried I was so sad. Then Winnie the Pooh took it's place, I loved it, and it made the pain of Toad not being there anymore a little less. Hopefully the same will happen when Mummy opens to the public.

Al had me going there for a sec exactly because I had already read about the new movie.

And you're right, Catch, it does bring an interesting point of discussion. But right now I have this incredible urge to go to Universal and laugh SO HARD on their faces! I mean, they MUST be kicking themselves! They'll be opening an attraction based on a franchise that many didn't like (I love all 3 movies, but still don't think they should've axed Kong) on the spot of a previous attraction that many loved and that will have a new movie coming soon! Talk about timing! But it's ok, Universal, selling t-shirts and mugs and teddies of a movie you just closed the attraction is fine too... Hey, here's a good logo: "King Kong - We had it"! :hammer: :hammer:

actually (and sorry if its been posted) but peter jackson was supposed to have created this film before the lord of the rings... so universal must of herd something about it years ago... though, this new kong, will it be made under the universal label?

also it was kinda sad for them to remove kong but from what job theyve done with IOA i have faith that they'll replace it with another pretty cool attraction...

As I read the announcement for the new King Kong, I was more than a little miffed. After all my grandmother's cousin's wife, Faye Wray, was in the original and our family has always had a soft spot for that version. Then when the other new Kong came out we all hated it. Now what are they going to do to this version??????:brick:

Actually I would not be surprised at all if in a few years Universal unviels plans to rebuild and bigger and better Kong attraction.

Kong comming back sounds like it could happen. Just think about it. They know a lot of ppl didn't want to see the King go, right? So I'm thinking that if they do have plans for Kong, they might want to wait for the movie to come out in '05, and see if people like it or not. They like it, a new Kong is a go, and possibly based a little on the new movie. If they don't, don't.

I never really liked it but I guess it's better than another roller coaster. DOn't get me wrong, I like roller coasters but some of them are just stupid. I didn't really like Kong but it can be a good ride if you are just coming back which I will be. Not a bad choice to bring it back.
