ETs not set to close. It's just going down for rehab sometime within the next few months. Apparently, it's getting a new preshow for the 20th aniversary of the movie and the portion where et says your name will be cut out.

Not sure, but don't they talk about "Cinemagic" or something like that? Hence, "Cinemagicians".

I really wonder why they do this. Not only Universal, but also Disney. Kong would be missed, probably as much as I miss Ghostbusters. I LOVED that ride. And, of course, everybody remembers Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Hey, there are even those who liked 20.000 Leagues Under The Sea! Legend of Lion King is going... It's sad to see our favorites go, most of the times not for the best.

And about another post, Disney doesn't explore Roger because there was some kind of problem with his rights. If you remember, they even released a couple of Roger shorts before some movies, and there are traces of him around MGM.

ok then, does anyone know the official name of the people that design rides at universal?

I think most of them are called 3rd party contractors but I'm also pretty sure there are a few that are also called 3rd party subcontractors.

I think not many people had the opportunity of seeing the Ghostbusters Show, but Kongfrontation is a classic, if not THE classic of Universal's property. People really need this ride, and I hope this new president is smart to let it live.

While I agree that Kong is as close to a classic as a park as young as USF could have it sort of goes back to the argument about CoP at MK. If the numbers aren't there, the ride won't be for much longer, either... In the case of Kong, the operational costs have to be high since there must be an employee on each car and it uses consumables. For as much of a part of the park it may be, if people aren't going to it, it's just sitting there occupying a large piece valuable realestate. What we tend to forget sometimes is that companies like Universal and Disney aren't in the business of historical theme park preservation. They are in the business of tourism. If they can remove a large under preforming attraction and plug the space with something new that people will flock to, don't think for a moment that they won't. It's business...

That aside, I have to say that I was not all that impressed with Kong the first time I went on it some years back. It seemed like you did a lot of moving around through empty streets without getting much of a look at the central character till the end. To me it just wasn't all that exciting. Granted, portraying something as large as that is not an easy thing to do and I couldn't tell you a practical way they could have done it any better but I see why people don't flock to it today. The last time I rode it, the person driving WAY overacted to the point that it was unintentionally comical and at the final scene, the big guy looked as though he was in a bit of disrepair with visible seams over his body and a really poor job having been done of covering the 'gums' in his mouth. I also realized how fake his eyes look. It sort of looks like you are being attacked by a giant beat up old stuffed animal. If they wanted, I imagine they could preform upgrades to the end that would stifle my complaints but it wouldn't make a lot of sense to. Why would they want to pump a million or two into an existing attraction that a increasingly smaller number of guests visit? I mean, they can't exactly put a sign up saying "New Refurbished Gorilla Inside" now can they? They want to spend that money somewhere where guests will actually notice. I'm guessing that's why most existing rides in all parks seldom if ever get serious updates unless changes in society or styles of the times require it.

Don't get me wrong. I know this doesn't make anybody feel any better and I'm not trying to say that those who like Kong should be happy about the change. I just know from personal experience that when it's something you yourself like, it's hard to imagine other people not feeling the same way sometimes. :(

I don't know if this is going to keep up, but for the past few times that I've visited Uni9versal, Kong has one of the longest lines in the park. Last Saturday, it had a halfhour wait while MIB had a 15 minute wait. If this ride has such bad attendance, why does it always have long lines? I've also noticed that when it doesn't have a line, most of the rides around it don't have any lines either, so maybe if this is an increase in attendce to the ride, maybe it'll be saved.

I'm guessing there is still hope because every time I go to universal, I always ask if Kong is planned to close up, and I always get the same answer..."No...It was but not anymore."

Also, if they have to get rid of a ride, I think they should get rid of earthquake. Although the ride is good, how many people have actually seen or remember this movie?

Well maybe there is still hope then :)

I agree about the Earthquake thing. The ride is cool but I have never seen the movie and had in fact, not even heard of it before the attraction. The sets they show along with the slow motion camera usage may have been impressive a decade ago but in a time when most studios would not even think of doing that kind of thing with models (thanks to the magic of CGI) both the set and the footage they show of it is a little less than impressive.. The show part after that is pretty bad, too. For the life of me, I don't know why they don't get rid of the stupid part where the guy "falls" all together. Can't the "director" just talk for a little longer or something?.. Maybe they could keep the ride but get rid of the first two parts and replace that area with something else... Even gift shop would be an improvement IMHO... The first parts were designed to stager the line area and I haven't been for a while when there was a line beyond the group waiting to enter the theater.

If I'm not mistaken, Kong's ride capacity isn't the best out there. It might just be me, but it seems like the line never moves.

While it is a classic ride, it's not worth the wait that the ride often gets. Therefore, people don't have a high satisfaction value when they get off the ride.

I'd hate to see the ride go as well as the next person. I'd hate it even more if they replaced it with a Scorpion King ride.

No, it's not the same. CoP is not as important in MK as Kong is in US. Last september, which was the last time I visited the park, the line was really long, maybe 50 minutes long, which I think is telling us that the ride is not deserted like CoP was before closing its doors.
About Earthquake, the movie was really a hit in the mid 70's. An instant blockbuster. However, the movie lost prestige when the time passed, but was probably the first "natural-disaster" movie which was actually well conceived. If you go and watch right now, you'll see what I mean. I guess the ride doesn't help to bump the movie since it's not that impressive, but if only they could improve it...

There is some new information on screamscape.com that says it will be removed and the mummy coaster is already planned. THAT WOULD MAKE ME VERY UPSET AS KONG IS ONE OF MY FAVS.
Why would they take away a classic and put in a movie they dont even know how good its going to do!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at USF a few days ago and talked to a OP on Kong. She said that they were told Komg would be closed after Halloween but then it was delayed until Feb. and then until March. Now she says they have not been told any date for closing but it should be coming. She said they are going to do a ride based on the Scorpion King movie.

Thats so sad. Why would they take away a classic. They should put the scorpion king coaster some where else, but not where kong is. THEY SHOULDNT TAKE AWAY KONG.
       :fork: :fork:

Ughhh...this makes me really mad well.........why can't they just find another spot for the attraction???? I hate it when Disney or Universal decide to replace popular classic attractions with "fresh, new, exciting" and very lame, corny, unpopular ones (JIYI). Someone needs to hit Mr. Gault on his head :brick: and let him know what the PUBLIC wants.

I saw the Scorpion King yesterday, and if they finally do decide to close kong down:mad:, they better find a better movie than that. A wrestler shouldn't be the main character in a movie...

I think with the results of the movie they will reconsider and not shut down Kong, which is a good thing. I really hope they do reconsider and not shut it down!!!!!!!!!!!!:) :) :)
