Hey all, wondering if you can help....

I am deliberating on the Kona Cafe - after reading threads I know that we def want to eat there - but here is my question - when?! We are big sushi lovers but I can't see this on the menu? I'm confused? Are we able to just pop in to Kona for some sushi at the bar (if they have a bar?), or would we need lunch reservations - unless of course they don't serve sushi at lunch time, in which case I will need to try and get some ADR for dinner?

Also, can I get the infamous Tonga toast at this restaurant - as I am so desperate to try it - the pictures on the food pages made me hungry!!!! :ROFLOL:

Thanks in advance!

If you just want Sushi I would highly recommend the Kona Island Sushi Bar at the Poly. It is open from 5-10pm and they have a much larger selection than Kona Cafe and a traditional Sushi Bar set up. Kona cafe is the home of both Tonga toast and pineapple macadamia nut pancakes but both are available during breakfast hours only. Tonga toast is also available in the quick service restaurant at the Poly that goes by the name of Captain Cooks.

My husband and I are obsessed with sushi, and from what I've heard on here and read in guide books, the sushi at California Grill is amazing. We're going in two weeks and have a reservation there - I'll let you know how it is!

We have always enjoyed it a lot!
Here's a little something to wet your whistle (from California Grill)....

Yellowfin Tuna Three Ways - Poki, Tartare, and Tataki $21

Sashimi - Yellowfin Tuna, Salmon and Hamachi $19

"Snake in the Grass" - Barbecue Eel with Shrimp Tempura, Avocado and Cucumber $22

Tempura "Malibu" Roll - grouper, snapper, cobia, hamachi, tuna tartare, and spicy sesame sauce $19

Crab and Beef "Oscar" Roll - jumbo lump crab, seared rare beef filet and spicy tarragon sauce $20

Spicy Kazan Roll - crab, shrimp, bay scallops, tuna and fireball sauce $20

California Roll - jumbo lump crab with avocado and cucumber $20

Yoshie's Deluxe Sushi Platter - maki and nigiri $25

(note: these regularly change, and additional specials are added. Beyond that, if you really know your "stuff" and have something specific in mind, just ask, I'm sure they would be up to a challenge. We really enjoyed the "firecracker rolls" when visiting last time)

Sashmi is simply raw fish but most of the fish in sushi is cooked.

It is AMAZING there - we ate so much food that night - to give you an idea - we had a 3 course meal, but also had the Deluxe Sushi Platter to start - I highly recommend!! Lots of food - yes! Would I change anything about the lots of food? No WAY!!! :ROFLOL:

The Kona Cafe is the best place for Tonga Toast, but I'm pretty sure it's only available at breakfast.

Somehow people survive.
But fyi, most if not all of the fish used in sushimi are from the ocean, anyway, cooking does little to destroy chemical or heavy metal contaminants if present. They are just as much there in a well done filet. Probably just as much risk with raw vegetables (organic or not)...maybe more.

While I prefer to use my raw fish as bait, I do periodically slurp a few or down one, two or a few dozen raw crustaceans. Can't be afraid of everything, right?
