Knott’s targets Disneyland passholders with $101 season pass as theme park wars heat up - OCR/SCNG

Disney sent myself and many others surveys about new annual passes just 2 weeks after they announced they were ending the program.

I'd love if the companies would move to a true ticket only option. There's no way their current prices are reflective of this.

If Universal can sustain charging 130 a day and Disneyland 150, more power to them. I'd personally be upset to buy a ticket just to find out I could've waited a month to get an annual pass.

edit: Universal is offering passes again
Honestly, if Disney offered say a 10 day ticket that could be used anytime for a year after first use, I would be ok with that, but I can't justify paying the prices for a one day ticket when there are far better values like Knott's to be had and be able to enjoy an entire year or more for less than that one day.

I think in the short term Disney will be able to sell tickets to sustain it, but I think only for a couple of months at most.

I hate what season passes do to parks, but this is a brilliant opportunity for Knotts to grow their fanbase. I just hope the deal doesn’t last long enough to turn the place into a teen daycare center.

I wonder if this will be a company-wide strategy for Cedar Fair.
So far the strategy has worked well over the past several years. Really the pricing isn't far off from what we paid for our 2020 passes back in 2019 when they first went on sale.

I think this is year 3 of the strategy. Cedar Fair's SP guests has increased by a large amount

To whom would this be a terrible idea?

Anyone who values the current Knott's experience. I mean honestly, they've built a niche for themselves over the last 60+ years on being NOT like Disneyland. Laid back and not as crowded. Now it seems, after Disney has said "we let things spiral out of control," Knott's wants to jump in and say "we wish we had a crowd problem" and start giving the place away? Knott's has far more to lose if the crowds swamp the place, they run out of parking and all the food and drink prices have to shoot up to compensate.

What's really sad here is, instead of it really being a conscious decision to be a little different, they are 100% in on emulating Disney's successes. Even at the cost of their "brand."

Since when did Cinco de Mayo became a stand-in for April fools day?

At Knotts? Since 1999.

Why shouldn't Knott's have the same crowds as Disney? It's called survival. Not being crowded can't continue. It's a downward spiral. When Disney has blockbuster crowds and Knott's doesn't, this isolates Knott's and makes it harder to maintain. Guests might not necessarily like lower crowds. Knott's can't keep up their experience if the crowds aren't there. The food prices were always high. Both Disney and Knott's could run out of parking spaces at certain times of the year. Usually, they don't. Their brand is sold to Cedar so I'm not sure why we need to obliterate their legacy for lower crowds.

As for that joke, you haven't explained. I guess an insider joke.

How easy will it be to go to Knotts though with capacity limits, especially on weekends? We used to take our kids when we had passes a couple years ago and it always felt packed to me. It sounds like a great deal, but if you have to fight to get reservations on weekends, is it really a good deal?

But this is coming on the heels of Disney basically saying they can't continue to be so crowded because it is hurting the guest experience. I think Disney is right to limit crowding in their parks because it has definitely impacted my enjoyment of the park. For many people, the appeal of Knott's was it NOT being crowded, so Knott's working to eliminate that is confusing.

It was a reference to Knott's starting a riot by offering admission for a nickel.

We've had this discussion 1000 times on these boards regarding Disney APs. There has to be a point of diminishing returns when it comes to how many people are in the park that only goes once a week, twice a week, or every few weeks, so their entry cost per visit is anywhere from $1 to $10. Those guests aren't going to eat any more food than the average person who paid full price. Then as I said above, you have long lines, and the possibility of turning people away at the gate or needing reservations diminishing the guest experience.

We'll have a better idea if any of this holds true later down the road. We are assuming that with Disneyland being day-ticket only at the moment that everyone will flock to Knott's. I'm sure quite a few will, but other similar parks have been doing cheap season passes for years and it's never been a major problem. People will also spread to other places as well like USH and MM.

SFMM 2021 passes.

1 park pass on sale for $75, normally $170.
2 park including water park - $121, normally $220
Are SFMM passes really normally $170?

Most Six Flags parks have passes for dirt cheap. My Six Flags park in Chicago runs sales all the time and I haven't paid over $70 for a pass in about a decade.

Ever since they got their new executive leadership post-Ouimet they've gone to a cheaper pass model. It'll be interesting to see how that works out for them since Cedar Fair parks have tried to take the Target approach to Six Flags' Walmart approach.
Technically, didn't Disneyland do that in 1955?
Knott's is older than Disneyland.

Can't remember exactly where I saw it, but someone online pulled up a bunch of source code and there was a bunch of new, presumably placeholder names for 6-7 "passports" in the reservation system. Could very well be old info, but interesting it would remain in there nonetheless.

I don't think we see anything that looks like pass until much later in the year at the earliest though -- unless attendance tanks hard after the initial rush.

That's cute. Those same people buying this new Knott's pass are still gonna be lining up to pay $154 to go to Disneyland when it opens. Disney will always be more popular than Knotts and those disgruntal annual passholders are still gonna pay the insane day ticket prices so they can get a dole whip and Bangel BBQ skewer.

I've been to Knotts a number of times since I was little to recently. I dont frequent there but go there every few years.

It has been crowded 75% of the times I've been. I've never heard anyone say "Knotts isn't crowded so I go there".

Universal, Six Flags, Knotts, Disney, they all get crowded.

Knotts isnt going to sell more than their capacity would realistically allow, same as any of the parks.

This is so true. I don't know why people play the revenge card when they buy another pass.

"Yeah I'm gonna show Disney! I'm gonna go to Knotts or Six Flags instead!"

Literally no one cares.

If you like themeparks you should go to all of them.
