I would have to say NOOK!!! I had the original Nook and then got a Nook Color last year for Christmas. It's pretty much my favorite thing ever! So easy to use, PLUS you can get Library books on the Nook! Let me know if you have any questions...I love any chance to talk about it! :)

Examine each of them, and figure out exactly why and what you need.

I only wanted a way to carry/store multiple books in one place, lots of titles, easy download, and I wanted them to be easy for me to read, so I chose Kindle. Once I put mine into its cover, it is actually easier to read than most books. The only time I need a paperback is when I'm flying to tide me over the take-off/landing.

If I wanted something that could "do" more, I might have chosen something else.

If color is what you want, go nook. I love my Kindle but don't care if there is color. The screens work different though. Reading from a Nook is much like reading from and iPad or a computer screen. Kindle's are not backlit so there is less eye strain but they aren't easily readable in low light.

Decide what is most important, color, eye strain, low light reading and pick that way.

You said you can get library books on the Nook, do you by chance know if you can get college books on it. DD e-reader for Christmas and not sure which one will allow the use with college books.

The Kindle is inexpensive and it's good if you like to read books, period. My wife loves it, but she's one who can just sit quitely and read for an hour at a time. She has a laptop if she wants to browse the web, watch videos or play games. We think maybe we'll also buy an iPad or one of the new Andoid tablets (not out yet). Amazon is coming out with a tablet soon too. To me these color tablets are more for articles/pics/media and maybe some games. Not as great for reading, because the LCD / backlighting can be stressful reading text for long periods of time. The Kindle looks like ink on paper and is not backlit.

My wife's Kindle case has a small light built in that is just right for reading in low light or even in the dark. You can purchase others.

I've tried both and the Kindle is MUCH easier on my eyes for long reading sessions.

Absolutely. I use my Nook for my college classes. My university's online library has an ebooks section that has all of the text books I will use for class and I can just download them straight to the Nook Color or my Galaxy Tab 10.1. :)

Not all of the Nooks are backlit, only the Nook Color. Just throwing that out there. :)

But I agree, you should definitely view the specs for each device and go with what fits for YOU. I would also recommend going into a store and holding the different devices in your hand. Personally, I didn't care for the keyboard on the Kindle, but I know people who love it. I'm not one of these Nook owners who automatically hate the Kindle - I think the more people who own e-readers of ANY brand, the better!

I don't hate the Kindle automatically. I just don't like any ereader that is not color. But I'm just weird like that. I do know that after a a while my eyes do tend to lose focus. But I rarely read for that long anyway.

Thanks, everyone!...for your input. I will take everything into consideration when I make my final decision. I'm basically looking for it to replace my books on the shelf and not to have to drag a bag of books with me on vacation. I don't need to watch video/check emails - I have a laptop for that. :) Thanks again!

Kindle...it's easy on the eyes, and I prefer having the keyboard to the touch screen that the E-Ink Nook has because it keeps the screen cleaner. I'd get the 3G + Wi-Fi version of Kindle because it's not much more money than Wi-Fi only, and you only have to pay for the 3G when you purchase (don't need a data plan).

I LOVE my Kindle. I'm something of a marathon reader, so it's easier on my eyes. I used to read a decent amount beforehand, but now I'm going through several books a month.
