The Kilomanjaro (sp?) vehicles are GMC trucks modified with the back removed and seating placed there. Also, the vehicles run off of propane and not gasoline.

Some of the rock outcroppings along the edges of the path the trucks drive on had to be reworked or even removed during testing (before the park opened) as some drivers were prone to hitting them and blowing the tires. Management frowned on blowing tires. :)

As you make a right turn in the long queing area and look behind you to see part of the exploration trail make note of the little service path behind the trash cans. That was my idea! Before they cut us a path through the trees, janitorial had to wade through the whole queue with full trash bags because there was no other way onto the line to get to those trash cans. Theres actually a hidden Mickey carved into one of those trees along that service path, thanks to one of the opening crew janitorial staff. If you knew which tree to look at you could see it from the queue.

Can this be switched off in case of emergencies?

And Jeffery, thats a nice little factoid you got there!

I'm betting no. We were told on the Backstage Safari tour that if you were late in getting to work at AK, you could end up getting stuck behind the line of slow moving vehichles back on the service roads behind AK. I would think they would speed them up if they could.

Actually they are limited to 8 mph on the ride path and on the backstage roads they can travel up to 25 mph.

The drivers can't make the decision though, it is all done electronically.

It's probably a transmission governor... meaning, they're limited to 1st gear on the Safari... and perhaps 2nd gear outside.

I sat up front once, I could swear I saw the speedometer peak at 12mph.

I did get stuck behind one of the vehicles on the main road... and for quite a long stretch. If they could go faster than 12, they werent. Traffic was backing up, and they wouldnt pull over to let everyone pass. It was just like getting stuck behind a pargo... lol

   That's exactly what the tour guide was telling us. He said that it backs up traffic, and they usally will not move off to let traffic by. He said it was a shot distance, but because they don't go very fast, it can take a while to get there. :D

I was in the front row on 3 straight safaris this past week. The little digital speedometer box specially equipped was between 10-14 when trying to chase down the poachers.

The normal truck speedometer was also clearly over 10 on 2 of my safaris.

I believe all disney vehicles run on propane to be environment friendly! even some of the antique vehicle used in mgm studios parades! most parade props are electronic!:sohappy:

In-park vehicles, perhaps. But the buses are definitely diesel (or bio-diesel) and the security vans are most likely just gas. Don't know what the pargos use.

ACTUALLY... The trucks are equipped with what is called dual speed. From the VM lot to the ride path they will go up to 20 mph. There are "pucks" (like on the ride path that trigger the Wilson audio and track the vehicles back at the station) in the VM parking lot that activate the second govenor to allow a speedy trip to the savanah. Once you get close, you run over another "puck" that kicks you back down to 8 mph. However, after you have been driving a while you learn that there are a few trucks that are faster than others, some of which you can get to a blazing 12mph in the poacher's scene!!

One further note, the mntc. crew can disable the govenors all together. I have personally seen one clocking at least 45mph in the parking lot and actually squeel the tires doing a turn!!
