Kilamanjaro Safari - Route Change

Hope I'm not duplicating a topic, but since I couldn't find anything, here goes.

Was on Safari yesterday, 3/6 and the road and route have been slightly changed.

About halfway past the first Cheetah habitat, the truck goes right and up over a hill (new pavement), adding maybe 8 feet in elevation for an eye level view of the lion habitat.

Before the detour, you can see a log across the roadway approximately opposite the second cheetah enclosure, suggesting the illusion that this was a naturally occuring event.

We talked with two CMs afterwards - the first suggesting it was because of debris in the roadway, but the second more willing to discuss the facts of the matter.

This, apparently, is not temporary. She said that AK had recently acquired 5 more Cheetahs and would rework the habitats to hopefully provide better views of the animals. Additionally, they hoped the hill climb would provide a good view of the lions.

Hopefully this is a positive development, even though the ride is just slightly shorter. It is true that from a distance, we could see 3 very active cheetahs in the second habitat.

This sounds exciting! Especially the better view of Pride Rock. I hope that it won't be temporary.

Erik, can you add anything?

If you listen to Jim Hill the route was changed due to “major” drainage issues. The cast member’s reason sounds much more realistic.

Oh God, don't mention JHM unless you want a 5 page discussion, although, I do agree that the cast member's reason is alot more realistic. Thanks for this exciting info, fillerup! A rep point for you!

Yea there is going to be a few other changes on the ridepath....I cannot wait to get back to drive it. They have been working on the new path over the hill for almost three months now. Glad to see it's finished :sohappy:

I think that its agood thing to change that. Seeing the big cats was really hard and if you were on the side of the truck that had the better viw people were always crowding around you to see. So I think that this change would make a good ifference.

I was there yesterday as well.

This new hill in my opinion didn't make an enormous difference as far as being able to see the lions went, however the comment suggesting it was to add room for new animals made sense.

Also, throughout the attraction there were several large, long stretches of that brown mesh-type fence with the "Animal Relocation Project" print on the side.

Anyone, Erik perhaps, have any insight as to whats getting moved around and why?

thanks! :)

Well I'm not down at Safaris right now but I know when the Burlap Fencing goes up that is usually for an animal relocation. My best guess is that the Baby and Mommie Tommies are going to be making an appearance very soon. I'll try to see what kind of info I can find out.

Well, it is THAT time of year! Did I ever mention that I was once a zoo docent, and took school groups around on tours? Early spring was ALWAYS interesting. "Lady, why are those _____(fill in the blank) fighting/wrestling?" "Lady, why does that animal (Tapir) have 5 legs?"

When I was a zoo volunteer, I heard the same comments. Expecially about the Tapir.
