Just Making an Observation

I just got back from the World on Sunday. I made frequent visitis to Epcot because it is now one of my favortie parks. While I strolled around the World Showcase I looked to see if the new hotels being built behind Germany were visible, and I do not beleive they are. But while I was doing so, a family member of mine noticed two buildings beind China and Norway. As I went to looked I noticed that two hotels had been built. To be honest, I think one of them has been there for awhile.

I know that these hotels have every right to be there. It's business at its best. It is capitalizing one of the the most visited attractions in America and even the world. So I took the time to drive out and see the two hotels, only to see that two or three pieces of land were being developed for what seemed to be future hotels.

When Disney World was originally built. Walt said that we wouldn't have the problem of small space like we did in California. I know that there is very little, or maybe nothing at all we can do about the hotels that have already been built. But if the vision that Walt had about not being surrounded by other hotels, gas stations, and other tack tourist traps still held true. Maybe the Walt Disney Company would have bought the other land to prevent other buildings to be seen from withing Epcot.

I know that many will say that I went looking for trouble and to most guests they probably think that the hotels are Disney's. And I know that the Swan and Dolphin can be seen over France. But to me, this is different. I really couldn't tell you why, but it really does sadden me. It seems as if trhe borders are shrinking. As it some cases it really is, with the development of Western Way and the Northern section of property.

Disney has been selling off excess land and some of that will be/has been built on. Walt is no longer here and times have changed. Personally, I'm too busy having fun in the parks to notice if I can see anything else along the skyline.

Disney is the best place to be, but they should invest in another theme park rather than sell land and bulid even more hotels. Not that there is anyhting remotely wrong with the parks they have now, but a new park would be amazing. Who knows what's really next though.

The Bonnet Creek hotels behind Epcot aren't part of the land sell-off. The owners of that land back in the 60's just never sold, and now we might have to look at hotels from Epcot.

I too worry about the "encroachment" from the outside world. I actually get slightly depressed when I see the "real world" across the street from Downtown Disney. I guess keeping all that out from the parks themselves is the most important, but still, i like to pretend that the rest of the world just doesn't exist when I'm there.

You mean the real world dosent stop the day I checkin at Disney till I leave the property. No wonder when I get home there is a pile of mail and the grass is really tall. But really I dont even turn the tv off the resort channels because I really dont want to hear what is going on "outside". I too dont really want to see a sign for Hampton Inn...Days Inn....Holiday Inn..ect while im enjoying Epcot but there s not much that can be done. Im sure they will sell certain rooms as epcot view.

I'm not a huge fan of these projects either, but at least the independent hotels that are up already (I'm not sure about the ones going up) are good, quality hotels and not Super 8's, Knight's Inns, Red Roof Inns, etc. Those are probably the types the sprung up around DisneyLand that Walt wanted to keep away (or sleezy roach motels worse than the ones I mentioned). As long as I don't see a lit up sign for a Super 8 motel behind Epcot (or something similar) I won't complain too much.

There are no hotels behind China and Norway. If you went between those two countries and continued straight back, there are EPCOT bulidings, an access road, Backstage lane, EPCOT Center Drive and then Old Key West.

You`d have to be near Mexico / The Odyssey to see Bonnet Creek anywhere near China; there could be a chance from the west shore you could see part of the Village Hotels though over Norway I guess.

I worked at Y&B and spent alot of time at Epcot. Those are service buildings. One is also a wet dock and dry dock for boats, Illuminations storage, etc.

They aren't directly behind them. They are relatively far away.

They MAY be the hotels I am talking about. One of them is a really tall Marriot.

I am not sure if you read my entire post. I did mention those two hotels. And neither of them have a big red Marriot sign on them. They are somewhat pleasing to the eye.

Those are not the buildings I am talking about. I am talking about two hotels, that are quite tall. Hence, why they can be seen from within EPCOT.



I suppose the main point of this thread, was to avoid seeing a light up sign for an outside hotel. (Such as, a Super 8, Marriot of Hilton). I still worry about what seems to be the shrinking in the size of property, whether it be from this or the selling of property.

One of the reasons I go to Disney is for them to take me to another world and I lose ALL contanct with the "outside" world. And even this, which may seem small to others, is big to me.

You sure can see them. They are actually on the other side of the Caribbean Beach Resort. Kinda far off, but they are in sight from Epcot. From the link above, they are down and to the left. South East. They are still being built in this un updated satilite shot.

I know its all about opinion, but those two are the most hellish carbuncles on Disney property. Im sorry but the Duck and Carp must go!
