I was in DTD tonight to do some final shopping, and I wandered into the Art of Disney. And to my surprise I found the Vinylmation Mickeys and a signing going on!!!

I bought 5, and got a free t-shirt. The ones that I chose were Figment, Haunted Mansion, Snow White's Apple, Monorail, and the Tea Cups. They are so cute and awesome!!! Plus the people who designed them were super nice and were excited to see how into them everyone was.

I will try to get some pics up soon!!!

What's a Vinylmation?

They are Disney's attempt to capitalize on the blind box vinyl craze. (At least I believe the Disney ones are blind boxed) Basically a "designer" toy. Usually 2-5 inches in size, alot of them come as a basic figure, which is then customized by designers. (Usually hip/urban artists) The company then mass produces the customized toy, and packs it in sealed boxes so you don't know which you are getting. Usually they come in a assortment of rarities. I.E. a box of 24 has 5 of A, 3 of B, 3 of C, 2 of D, 4 of E, 3 of F, 3 of G, 1 of H. This series is a bunch of stylized Mickey's painted in different paint schemes. Kinda like the 75th Mickeys from a few years ago, but more Disney themed and less Mickey in a different outfit.

We got the whole speil about the Vinyalmation Mickeys at the Art of Disney in DTD last Monday night. The small ones ($9.99) come in a blind pack (meaning you don't know which one you will get). Once you've opened the box you cannot return it. You can buy an entire case to make sure you get every one of them though (about $250!!).

The CM manager explained that they are actually going to have VM Trading Nights hoping that it will take off like the pins. I personally don't see that happening but anything is possible.

Personally I don't like the shape of the Mickey's as they look like Anime figures from Japan. While the designs are cute for the most part it's just something I can't see being a huge hit.

I'd be surprised if people started carrying around mini-figurines to trade. Not to mention all the CM's would have a bunch of toys hanging around their neck all day long.

They seem cool, but I agree with you, I don't see them taking off ala the pin trading phenomenon. Just too cumbersome to carry around the parks. But then again I never thought the pin trading would be so popular, so one never knows.

No, nonono no! You can't throw these things over in MY corner! They're not Chibi at all. Even small blind pack figures from Anime in a rounded style are still sculpted differently than each other. While the idea of buying small figures blindly is alike, the style comes more from Avant-garde Sterotype "High-art" types from Design groups in New York and such, not Japan. It is like Kubricks a bit, but not Anime at all.

Now Gashapon is Anime. Same idea, but are Fully Sculpted larger figures based off of shows and can be bought at Vending Machines, for much less than $9.95!

No, I don't know why American corporations are so into white spheroid things that you can paint. Turn to Cartoon Network, same things hopping around.

I don't like them either.

It just has that look or Anime to me. But just in case people still haven't seen it let's post a link:

Like I said, this picture here is what small tradeable Figures based off of things typically look like...

Small Fully sculpted blind packed figures based off of characters from Anime shows. White blob spheroid creatures you paint on are an invention coming from somewhere else.

A couple of them are kind of cute, I like the monorail one, but IMO most of them are scary looking, especially the Kermit with the eyes/ears . We do the pins (not so much to trade, just as something fun to collect), but I don't have any desire to start picking up these. But hey, that's just me, to each their own!
