Just got back from first stay at POFQ

After a lackluster stay at a non-renovated room at Coronado Springs early last year, my wife and I tried POFQ this time due to the great reviews. Unfortunately, I was not able to get us a king-sized room, so we were stuck with double beds, which would end up being our only complaint about the experience. POFQ was just, by far, a more enjoyable experience than CSR.

Grounds and Amenities...the ambiance just cannot be beat here, as the grounds are almost on par with a deluxe resort! Theming is just fantastic...all the flowers, arches, architectural elements, the masked figurines, the lobby, the food court...we loved it all!! CSR's theming just looks a bit cheap by comparison, though I do love the lake setting there. The pool was nice, but I would give the nod to CSR on that one...much bigger hot tub and waterslide there. Food was better at POFQ...we did not care for the Pepper Market at CSR one bit. We also liked the little bar at POFQ at night, which is situated next to the lobby and looks like you are in a very pretty little square. The entertainment was good, if a bit cheesy on the song selection, but what do you expect. When we were at CSR, the Rix louge was completely dead. Might have been due to the time of year. The compact design of the resort is also a plus, so getting to the food court, transportation, or whatever, is just a short walk away. We were in building 7 which is the furthest from the entrance, and even from there the walk was short and very enjoyable due to the scenery. We even saw a horse-drawn carriage at night, which was just a cool touch and something which would be fun for those looking for something different.

Rooms...we really liked the decor and the pedestal sinks give the room a touch of class. The main complaint for us were those beds. I don't really understand how a double bed is acceptable for anyone. If we had kids, we would never return here and be forced to sleep on those tiny things, and this is coming from two people who are pretty small. Based on that one fact alone I would recommend a family of four to CSR over POFQ because beds are just a huge factor on a vacation. The queen size beds needs to become a standard at the Moderate resorts and they should all follow in CSR's footsteps. However, for a more romantic vacation for two, POFQ would be perfect if you get a king room.

Transportation...bus system worked great here since you are the first on and the first off for the entire PO complex. Can't beat that, even though it makes a few stops at PORS so it takes a while...at least you will be sitting! I prefer the bus service over driving to the park, parking, and taking a tram or monorail to the entrance. We also loved the boat transportation to Downtown Disney...seriously, I wish you could take boats everywhere at WDW.

Bottom line? We love POFQ and I would see no reason that we would choose any other Moderate unless we had to get a double bed room again. Hopefully they will address this during the next renovation.

Question, did you book a King room or did you simply request a King room? At POFQ a King room is a category of it's own and you must book it, same as you would a water view if you want to guarantee yourself a king room.

Yeah, I booked with the Florida resident discount, and the option for a King wasn't even available on the website. I either waited too long to book, or king rooms were not part of the special rates. In hindsight...I should have called.

Not old, just vintage.

I had a similar problem with booking a King room with the AP discount. According to the CM on the phone the King room category doesn't show up when a discount is being used. Therefore, the only thing you can do is put in a request at this point. There wasn't even anything she could do about it from her end. She gave me the phone number for POFQ directly and told me how to get in touch with the person who assigns the rooms. I did manage to talk to this person about a week before my arrival and I ended up with my King room. Its just an annoying computer glitch that they never bothered to fix I guess.

As someone who just got back from a stay at POR, I am all to aware of this! My daughter got so mad about never being the first to be picked up or dropped off. All I'll say is the bus service at POR was the worst! It had me seriously doubting if I will ever stay on property again. If I do, you can bet I'll rent a car.

And those beds! So small and uncomfortable! Try sharing one with a four-year-old some time. I spend the last night on a trundle bed.

Bus service at POR is usually the biggest complaint. Why Disney doesn't realize they need seperate buses for the two resorts, or add additional busses during peak times to cut down on the issues, I just don't understand.

We stay on property when we visit, but also get a rental car. For us, it's just more important to be able to go where we want when we want, and not have to depend on the busses. We'll still use the busses once or twice on a trip, especially to MK, but rely more on the car.

Hopefully the rest of your experience was better!

There's a link in my sig to the full trip report. For the most part, it was a fun trip. But we still wake up in a cold sweat thinking about those horrible busses.

Once, they actually separated the two resorts. And a POR bus pulled up. We all cheered. But the next thing we knew, those sneaky POFQ people were talking to the driver. Then they started boarding our bus! The bus was completely filled with POFQ guests before it pulled up for us POR folks.

The driver explained that a change was made and he'd be picking up both resorts. Sigh.

We started keeping track. POR was always the farthest stop from any gate no matter where we went.

The bus issues wouldn't have been so bad, but we had a 4-year-old, an infant and a double stroller we were constantly folding and unfolding.

Thankfully, the other people on the bus were always kind enough to let my wife and the kids sit down even though we were always loaded last. But still, it got tiresome.

I agree that renting a car is the way to go. But once you rent a car, you have to start looking off site. And the deals you can get off site make it hard to rationalize staying on property.

I thought POR was beautiful. And they had the best food court of any of the resorts we've stayed at. (Build your own pasta was the bomb!) But I think my wife and daugter would kill me if I ever suggested staying there again.

For us, staying on Disney is part of the whole experience, but yes, if you have a rental car, it can be worth looking off site to save some money (sometimes a whole lotta money).

I agree that POR is a beautiful resort. My favorite resort is POFQ, but I've stayed at both. They are close enough together that we end up walking to the other one at least once on a trip to enjoy the atmosphere.

I'll check out your trip report, and hope your next trip - on site or off - doesn't have any transportation problems!

French Quarter

My family absolutely loves the French Quarter. We are actually going back this July. We tried the CBR last summer and did not enjoy it. Yes, it is beautiful, but it is way too big. My daughters (5 and 8) did not appreciate the long walk to the main building and pool. I think this is the one big reason we love the French Quarter, it is so small. I wonder when all of you with the bus problems went. When we went two summers ago for 8 days, we only shared the bus with the Riverside 2 times, out of the multiple times we used the bus. The rest of the trip the bus only picked up French Quarter. I don't know if because it is more crowded in the summer they tend to add more buses?

We enjoyed the view of POFQ on the boatride to DTD. One day we walked over and sampled the beignets. We all agreed it was really nice.

Part of the problem with the transportation is that we've been spoiled by off-season trips. Part was the young kids. And part was that the bus service just stank. :ROFLOL:

My hope is that next time we go, we can drive. But I always say that and then we end up flying. Although after Delta charged us $20 a bag each way for a total of $120, I may be able to talk my wife into driving next time.

Truth is, we had a very good trip and I liked the resort a lot other than the busses and the beds. I'm just being grouchy in this thread. Blaming the guests at FQ for our woes became something of a game during bad bus rides.

Disney does sometimes separate the two resorts onto their own routes. On our last vacation, they split the resorts for the run to and from MK, but all of the other theme parks shared a bus.

The bus issues at Port Orleans are a valid complaint. It certainly isn't an isolated incident, so I would be grouchy too! But I'm glad the trip overall wasn't a disappointment for you.

I agree about the bus issues at POR, but don't say "Port Orleans" has a bus issue. I don't think POFQ has any sort of bus issue. We went to the 4 main parks last week, which was a busy time due to spring break, and the busses were coming frequently. I would never stay at POR due to the bus setup there, as I love utilizing the bus system at Disney. Overall I think it works well. I have stayed at Pop Century, CSR, POFQ, and Yacht Club...bus system was great every time. I love just getting away from any and all car usage while I am at Disney. Getting back in my car takes away from the immersion of staying on property IMO.

Since the buses are sometimes shared, then the issue effects the resort as a whole in those cases. When they are shared, they stop at FQ first, so there is no issue there, but it carries over to Riverside, and then there is an issue. Semantics, perhaps, but an issue for the resort as a whole when the buses are shared. Less of a problem leaving the resort, but still a problem when returning to the resort when you have guests from both trying to board the bus at the parks.

Glad you didn't have any issues, sounds like they were running the bus system well for your visit. I think the bus system as a whole is pretty good, even including POR. It is surely more efficient and convenient than any off site bus alternative.

Guests staying at French Quarter can get the impression that the Disney buses are always shared with Riverside. The reason is that most buses leave French Quarter not full so, instead of going to the park with an unfilled bus, they also swing through Riverside and fill them up.
From the viewpoint of the French Quarter guests, the buses always seem to be shared.

What guests staying at French Quarter don't see is that Riverside also has its own buses. The ones coming from French Quarter are extra.

To further confuse things, because they ran out of space for bus stops at DHS, the FQ and Riverside buses share a stop there. At the other 3 parks there are separate bus stops for French Quarter and for Riverside.
Also, during the slower times of the day when there are few riders, they may share buses.
