Jungle Cruise Gun Shots?

Alright, I'll see if I can't get this timeline correct. First, and originally, the guns firing blanks. Second came the guns firing sound effects. Third came telling the skippers to not point the guns firing sound effects at the hippos, but just to scare them away (thus the tree hippo jokes were born).

When I worked at Jungle, about half of our boats had working guns. Some boats didn't even have guns. There are some lines you can use if the gun misfires (it happened with the blanks, and it happens with the sound effects). "Bang, bang! I scared them away with my bad acting." In the SOG (standard operating guidelines) there are about 3 pages of hippo jokes/setups/attack sequences/etc...

I think my favorite gun story would have to be when I was going through the hippo pool and the entire barrel of the gun broke off and fell into the hippo pool. I can't even remember what I said to the crew-- I was just staring at the gun going 'what the...?'

With that said, how many of ya got up this morning and were like 'Jungle Rehab...gotta do it!' ? It needs it...badly.

We rode it Wednesday. The gun was an audio effect and he shot into the air to scare the hippos. I still remember the good old days back in the early 80's when they shot the hippos with blanks...I was just glad to see they were using a gun at all, as it reminded me more of the old days...:)

I like it when my Jungle Cruise skipper is packin' heat. I think the caps were a fun suprise to people who have never been on the ride. I don't see anything wrong with firing it in the air either to scare off the animal. I wonder if JAWS at Universal still does it.

We definitely shoot at the shark over at Jaws...we miss a lot, but that's beside the point...

What's funny about the grenade launchers at Jaws is that only about half of them are wired to make any sort of noise when shot...I had no idea any of them made noise, so imagine my surprise when I grabbed my gun, accidentally pulled the trigger, and heard a gunshot over the speakers. It was during a rather intense part of the attraction with quite a few other audio effects, so I'm hoping I'm the only one who noticed that I blew out the bottom of my boat...

I've seen it done so many different ways over the years. Sometimes an actual shot, sometimes only with audio, sometimes no sound at all, and sometimes no gun at all.

I remember the guns quite well, and I've been going to WDW since about 1972.

The first time my wife and I took our son (he was 3), they had quit using the gun. The skipper even made fun of it, saying something about having to use a pretend gun since management took away their real ones - so, on the count of three, the entire boat yelled 'BANG!'. It was really comical, and the skipper played it perfectly.

The first time we took both of our kids (son was 6, daughter was 2), they were using the guns again. Don't know when they quit using them, don't know when they started to use them again, but have seen it both ways.
