Although reports from back in 2011 seemed to suggest that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides co-writer Terry Rossio had developed a screenplay for a fifth installment in the hugely successful franchise, Variety reports today that Catch Me If You Can scribe Jeff Nathanson has been brought aboard the same project. It's unclear whether or not Nathanson will be working from Rossio's draft or if he'll be tackling the project as a page one rewrite.

Launched in 2003 with The Curse of the Black Pearl, the Walt Disney Pictures franchise has, in every film so far, featured Johnny Depp in the role of Captain Jack Sparrow. The most recent adventure, On Stranger Tides, also starred Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Sam Claflin and turned out more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Check back for details on the fifth adventure as soon as they become available

Not saying this franchise is dead, but I think their best option might be a reboot with a young Jack Sparrow before the Black Pearl.

Hmm...do we really need a 5th Pirates movie? But I agree that the idea of a young Jack could be interesting. It might be the only way I'd be into a 5th Pirates flick.

I am probably POTC target audience, I loved the first one, watched it like a bazillion times, but I didnt even watch the fourth one. We do not need a fifth.

For me, a young Jack would be one of the last things I would want them to do. The only prequel I would want to see would be the events before curse of the black pearl. I still think the best bet is to continue the story but make it a stand alone movie like the first, not tied together like 2 & 3.

I wish that they would stop making these movies, but the last movie brought in a huge amount of money into the studios. The studio division needs dependable franchises to counter bombs.

I liked the 4th one. Nowhere near as good as any of the first 3, but still a solid installment, in my opinion. I am looking forward to the 5th and probable 6th movie and I am hoping they can improve on their mistakes from the 4th one. Oh, Will and Elizabeth would be welcomed back with open arms :)

Highly unlikely unless he makes a brief cameo at the end or something. I wonder if they'll make this movie out to be a treasure hunt chase to the island of Tortuga.

Oh, they could *easily* write him and Elizabeth back into this. Not a problem at all. Will could have some falling out with Calypso and boom...he's cast out and some mcguffin brings the whole old crew back together.

But I don't think that's very likely at all. I really wish that Rossio hadn't left such a character and plot specific lantern hanging in the post-credits scene in OST. I felt that Angelica (or specifically, Penelope Cruz) had dreadful chemistry in this movie...They could have easily written her completely out if it wasn't for this post-credits scene....which I feel they have to adhere to, as these scenes are just as important as the movies themselves.

Now, they're stuck having to write a movie based around a character (and actress) that sucked the life out of OST...and a stupid voodoo doll. So throughout this whole 5th movie, is Jack going to be suffering from back pain because Angelica is sticking pins in his doll while stuck on that island? Real smart!!
