Tron: Legacy only cost $170M in 2010. Back 15 years ago the threshold to breakeven was lower, at only 2X production budget. So it did actually breakeven during theatrical, add to that the $60M+ it made post-theatrical, plus the re-releases, and its more than broke even, at over $470M. So no it wasn't a flop at the box office.I just don't see a big enough audience for this movie. The last one flopped at the box office.
It only got 399 million at the box office, which is well below breakeven. Thanks to it's 200 million dollar budget + advertising. It had to get at least 600 to 700 million.
We don't know the budget for Ares, but I think there is more audience there than you realize.
