I've never been on a cruise before...

Are cruises fun? I don't have children, just myself and my wife.
My wife and I have cruised as a couple on Royal Caribbean to Alaska, and on Carnival to Cozumel/Yucatan. We also took one cruise with a grown daughter to the Bahamas. Excursions were the fun part.

To me, the cruise ship was mostly a floating hotel. The ports of call were the real vacation. We did a lot of excursions on our Alaska cruise, and stayed extra time at a B&B in Alaska. For our Cozumel cruise we did one excursion (dolphin swim) and then went out on our own on the mainland. We spent an wonderful day snorkeling and enjoying the food. There are extra perks on the ship - shows, good food, etc. But, that is not why we cruise.

Our next cruise is a change in our approach. We are taking the grandkids on a Disney cruise. We are not getting off the ship in Nassau, except maybe to get some souvenirs. We definitely will get off at Castaway Cay and enjoy a beach day. For this cruise we want to experience Disney and all of what Disney offers on board the ship. Lots of memories to make with the grandkids.

But, after this, we are backing to cruising as a couple, exploring ports of call. We are hoping to use the NCL Pride of America cruise to visit several of the Hawaiian Islands. The ship is definitely just a floating hotel, and overnight transport between the islands.

So, if you like to visit different locations and not worry about transportation or hotels, cruising can be a fun way to have that experience.

OTOH, we have good friends who love to cruise a lot and almost never get off the ship. They see it as an inexpensive way to relax and get away.

So, it all depends on how you want to define fun.

Yes, they can be a lot of fun. But if you get seasick, not so much. I would recommend taking a brief 3-4 night cruise on a medium-size ship for your first time to make sure you're not sensitive to the boat rocking. Those mega-ships can be overwhelming in their size and everything they have to do. You need a few nights just to get your bearings.

It's been years since we have done DCL, mostly because our kids grew up but also because it's very expensive when compared to other cruiselines. And every cruiseline caters to different clientele. Azamara tends to draw an older crowd (no kids clubs, no rock climbing, etc.), Carnival has a party reputation, DCL doesn't have casinos, etc. Pick a cruiseline that closely fits your idea of a great vacation, then explore itineraries.

It's been quite sometime since I have really traveled in the world. The last time actually I took a flight was years ago going to Vegas. I have been to Hawaii and all around England and Scotland. Ive also been to the Grand Bahama island years ago. My wife hasn't extensively traveled with me, just to Vegas. I did get somewhat seasick, but that was when I was dating someone else prior. We went salmon fishing out in the ocean in Washington state.. The weather was pretty bad that day and the winds were very choppy. My head didn't stop spinning until after a day, actually. Some of my neighbors down the street from me cruise all of the time. Sounds kind of fun to me. Was just looking for something different out there. Strange question: What do you do if you don't enjoy the people that you're traveling with? We're not really big partyers. I'm a big swimmer myself.

Hi Eric!
The bigger the ship, the more there is to do. I've cruised on Royal Caribbean International (RCI) a few times and will go again in Dec. of this current year.
Here are the different size ships with some details about each "class" of ship. I hope you find this to be helpful...

Only you @Eric Graham can decide if a cruise is something you should do in the near future, but this online article will probably be helpful....

My wife and I did not hang out with anyone that was at our dining table. We did everything on our own. Oh, and the pools on cruise ships are not really great for swimming - way too many people. Even the adult-only areas have small pools. I'm a triathlete and the best training I could get in was the treadmill or stationary bikes in the gym (the free stuff - not the spin classes that charge a fee). I must say that it is an interesting experience running on a treadmill while the ship is in motion. But, some great views during the workouts!

I am one who thought cruising would not be for me as I like to be very active while on vacation (sight-seeing, hiking, etc.). My mom and sister had been on a cruise before and my sister said that it was an awful experience and said that I would not have fun. We were all wrong!!! My cruise last year was probably one of my favorite vacations in a long time. I never felt trapped while on the ship and had a blast. If you don’t enjoy the people you are traveling with, there are plenty of activities you can do without them. While I get along with my travel partners, we still separated and did other activities while on board. For example, my mom wanted to go relax in the rainforest room while my sister and I did other activities. She and I played trivia frequently and often wound up in one of the movie theaters.

We’ve been on 5 cruises since Dec. of 2017 (4 Carnival, 1 Disney), and have always had a blast…!!!!!!! :joyfull:
We have 3 children, now grown, and been on all cruises with them, and more recent cruises with our 2 young granddaughters.
I’ve never failed to both have fun and relax on one.
I just wish we hadn’t waited so long to start cruising.
One of my favorite things is to be out on the veranda for sunrise…!!!!! :inlove::happy::)

We’ve never had any issues with seasickness on a cruise, or experienced any craziness with other passengers either, but, obviously, it happens.
The exceptions being making announcements looking for passengers who were late back to the ship, looking for a passenger on one cruise early one morning, and some minor stuff like that.
We just really enjoy cruising…!!! :)

Oh wow, a triathlete. I used to run pretty seriously, but that was a time ago in my 20s. Sounds wonderful about seeing the wonderful views during workouts on a cruise ship. Sometimes it can be hard for me to navigate swimming the laps at the Y. :p
