It's so sad...

FYI, Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Academy Award for her role as Mammy in "Gone with the Wind" in 1939. James Baskett, who played Uncle Remus, was only given an Honorary Award for "Song of the South" in 1948.

I really wish they would reconsider releasing "Song of the South". It is all part of our history.

Splash Mountain isn't based on song of the south...its based on america sings....:lookaroun

Why does every disney ride have to be "based" on a movie anyway?

Space Mountain, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder, Expedition Everest, Matterhorn, etc. all got on just fine without being "movie TIE IN's"

Some of the animatronics from Disneyland's "America Sings" were incorporated into "Splash Mountain" at that park. "Splash Mountain" is indeed based on Song of the South.

The thing with Song of the South is that the "slaves" aren't technically slaves considering the film takes place during the Reconstruction era after the Civil War, but most african americans in the south still had to work on the plantations for like no money, which in all honesty, wasn't all that different from before. If slavery was still fully around, Uncle Remus couldn't leave the plantation all by himself. Savvy?

Can someone please explain the meaning of "Dixie Landing". I never knew what it meant and now you guys saying it had something to do with SOTS and being politically incorrect, I'm more curious to know the meaning.

Thanks!

Dixie landings was the original name for typhoon lagoon.

When you refer to Dixie, it refers to the south. i honestly don't have a problem with it, but i can see how it can be taken as a possible lawsuit. Because some people take the term Dixie to reperesnt their mindset of how the south should be the way it was before the civil war. Basicaly the redneck mentality so to speak.

Dixie Landings was the original name for Disney's Port Orleans Riverside.

You are absolutley correct. I may have confused the issue with an early post calling the characters slaves, which they are not.

The main reason why its been pulled is the portrayal of Uncle Remus. While its true, he's not a slave (anymore), in order to comply with the attitudes of the day (mostly in the south), he's still very subservient to the white people. You'll see this in a lot of the movies of the time period if you watch TCM, even those set in "modern" times. (Just off the top of my head is the classic Christmas movie "Holiday Inn", it actually had a scene cut from it permanently, even on the dvd)

I'm also one of the lucky ones to have a copy of "Song of the South". Its one of my most treasured tapes in my collection of Disney movies.

I think its an outrage that it still has not been released in the US. Its one of the most touching storys ever put on to film and is one of my favorite films of all time. I challenge anybody to watch the scene when Johnny is in bed sick and Uncle Remus comes in without crying. It gets to me everytime.

When I was a cast member I would go to the parks with other cast members and we'd ride SM and I only found one of my friends that had seen SOTS. Very sad that this touching movie has been kept away from so many people.

I didn't even know that there was a movie call sots. I only know of the story behind Sm because I remember it being read to me as a children's book, at least I think it was. But Now I am wanting to see the movie Now, I guess I will have to be on the hunt on ebay looking to see if I can find one.

Wait. I own that DVD and there isn't anything about it on there. The Disneyland Treasures DVD is the opening of Disneyland and up to the 10th anniversary. Splash mountain wasn't until much later.

Check the Disneyland Story on the First disc. I think it it's during the part as to where walt is talking about Either Fantasyland or Frontierland...Walt mentions Brer rabbit and then it goes right to the sequence of The Laughing place story. It's not about Splash mountain but just the whole animation scene from SotS.

I just hate it when a book/piece of artwork/movie is banned because it is offensive. Yes, American History is not always faltering (watch "Atomic Cafe or read "Lies My Teacher Told Me"), but if we fail to study it, we will be doomed to repeat it. And despite its critism I think that it could be great in an American History classroom (definitely for high school students and up) for discussion over how affective Reconstruction was/wasn't.

I know the story of Brer Rabbit (and I'm 17) because when I was a kid, I had the Song of the South story book with the audio tape that went along with it. It was one of my favorite books when I was a kid, and growing up, I was surprised when I heard that people didn't know the story of Brer Rabbit and the Tarbaby.

BUT, I'm with Connor. Splash Mountain can certainly stand on it's own without SotS even existing. The story is excellently portrayed through the ride and people don't even need to have seen the movie to understand the ride. That's what makes Splash Mountain so great.

I don't think it's really sad that kids don't know SotS. That's how things are.

As you can see from my Avatar I feel the same way. I love Song of the South and I'm lucky enough to own it :D , its from Europe from a laser disk (for those that remember laser disc's).

I know the movie portrays slavery and perhaps Disney doesn't want any association with that, but so does Gone With The Wind and many other movies. And I don't know anyone that ever saw SOTS that didn't fall in love with Uncle Remus or any of the African-American characters in the movie. And I think it has a great message. I would at least like to see or hear an official reason why Disney wont re-release the movie.

Dont mind hearing anyone that has an opposite point of view (That has seen the movie).

Just like you I am also lucky enough to have it on Laser disc except mine is from Japan I believe. It is a wonderful film and will certainly let my children see it. I agree that I dont understand why it cant be released. Just like I dont understand why they ban books like Tom Sawyer. Wonderful book that every kid should read. SotS is a sweet film with lovable characters? Not some ugly story focusing on the negative and horrors. Or is that the problem, the characters are happy, and that is not how it truely was? The film industry has no problems making films based on other horrible things that have happened in history. They dont want kids to see Uncle Remus but no problem releasing a new horror film what seems like every week these day. I dont like my daughter to see the trailers for these films.
