Trip Report It's Not Goodbye, It's "See Ya Real Soon, AP"/ SSR December trip report *COMPLETED*

Hi everybody! We are back from our last trip from this whirlwind Annual Pass year. Sadly, we have decided to be all responsible and stuff this next year, doing household improvements and repairs. Boo. For DH, it comes at a good time, as he is feeling he needed a break anyway. Definitely not me!! We have plans to get the AP in another year or two again...

This report might not happen quickly, though it is a shorter one, with the holidays (swiftly!) approaching. I'll be headed to Pennsylvania for a few days with family, so not sure when I'll be able to work on it. It might even be best to wait until after the holidays, but we'll see....BUT if you need motivation to read it....this report *mayormaynot* contain a visit with our favorite Disney "character"...

We'll start with the specifics:

WHO: DH, Dave (Mrhappyplace) and me, Amber
WHEN: December 14-17, 2017
WHERE: Saratoga Springs Resort, Studio

Something new we did, was the Keys to the Kingdom Tour...stay tuned for all of the details and pictures!

We arrived at Epcot, and headed toward the AP line.

There was a family ahead of us, and then a woman. We weren't sure if the woman belonged to the family or was on her own. While the family sorted out the various kids and scanning, the woman kept right on walking by the family (who were at the tapstiles) on the right, right on into the park!! She was talking on a cell phone and just wandered in! DH and I were flabbergasted. Not a single other person noticed. I grabbed a picture a little further on. In my usual passive-aggressive way, I said out loud "must be nice to not have to use a ticket to get in the park" but she either didn't hear, didn't understand, or didn't care. It irritated me, but we got over it.

Anyway, onto fun! And cute topiaries!

We made a beeline toward World Showcase...we don't usually do much in Future World...

I would love this snowman as a yard decoration!

I really liked looking at the decorations at each pavilion...Mexico was particularly pretty. I didn't catch a picture, but the mariachi were singing Christmas songs.

IMG_7324 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

We made our way to Norway and noticed the Vikings...I am super into vikings right now. The History Channel tv show, reading about them, etc, (DH calls them my "shirtless barbarians with swords" shows), so I asked DH to take my picture (meaning with the vikings). This is what I got:
IMG_7325 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

Well, there were 2 vikings, and a group of 4 people, 2 couples. So we formed a line behind them, like a normal meet and greet. The women were taking pictures of the two men with the vikings. After their picture, the group of 4 people just stood there in the way. So I sort of walked around them, and up to the vikings who had started to walk away. I was just about to ask if I could get a picture, when a woman and her kid ran around me, and the woman told her kid to go up to the vikings, and the vikings walked away (I guess they were thinking there wasn't a line of people anymore?) I blame the stupid group of 4 that didn't meet them, then move on...but whatever.

ANYWAY

I think Germany is my favorite pavilion
IMG_7326 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I was determined to get the Werther's caramel corn that everyone raves about, so I headed to Karamel Kuche and got in line. We watched this fellow drizzle caramel on some treats..he was very focused.
IMG_7328 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

Success!
IMG_7329 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

We didn't eat any then, but rather took it back to the resort. Where it sat for a day or two and then we ate some on the way home. And there's still half a bag left. Oops. It was good!

France. We sort of just wandered, taking in the sights. We had an ADR coming up so decided to see the rest of the shows that we missed from September...Canada and France (it wasn't until days later I remembered that even though I try to see them every time, I had wanted to see Voices of Liberty do some holiday songs. Boo.)

We decided on the Canada show first. While we were in the seating area awaiting the show, we inadvertently left our tripod, and didn't realize it until right when the show was ending. Luckily, the people in the seat when the show was over had it and were just about to turn it into the cast members.

Then it was back to France for the show there.
IMG_7337 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

IMG_7338 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I enjoyed France's show much more, but man does it show its age!!

It was nearing our ADR, so we made our way back toward Morocco. On the way we passed a woman in an ECV that was DECKED. OUT. in holiday lights! I tried to capture a picture as she moved past, but a) she was moving and b) I tried to hurry the shot because a man was about to walk in front of it and this is all I got. Trust, it was magical.

With a few minutes to go until our ADR (but not wanting to get there too soon so we could make our meal stretch into Illuminations), we noticed a Photopass photographer setting up, and so asked her if we could get a picture. She said sure, as soon as she got set up correctly, and then she asked if we would be her test subjects. We agreed happily.

^^ I realize in the picture that we stood on the wrong sides, we were supposed to stand so that WallE and Eve held hands...oops.

Anyway,
IMG_7344 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I forget our server's name at the moment, but he was good. He promised us that we didn't need to worry about trying to stretch our meal, that the table was ours for the duration. This was an especially good thing, as I became aware that Illuminations was actually a half hour later than I thought. So that eased my mind. Plus there were plenty of other tables.
IMG_7345 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

DH told me to place the order for our table, so I ordered him (mostly him. I had a couple) the calamari (on our server's recommendation)
IMG_7346 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

The warm brie with orange marmalade and almonds...I thought this was delicious! It was also another recommendation.
IMG_7347 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

This is the lamb sausage, which was pretty good. I really liked the tomato and cilantro accompaniment, and overall it all tasted like a taco to me!
IMG_7348 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

We had all that first, then our order of lamb sliders with hummus fries came out, for us to split. Also very good. It was my first time having the hummus fries and I really enjoyed them! DH said he found them simultaneously good and revolting??
IMG_7350 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

It was getting a little chilly, and the cast members had lit one of the heaters out on the deck. We thought there was a chance that the table nearest the water would stay empty but alas, they did sit a family there very close to Illuminations time. So we'll just have to deal with heads in the bottom of each shot. I set up my tripod, not that it did much good, because I just do not do fireworks photos well.

DH and I don't really make a point to see Illuminations, since I've seen it a bunch of times and he has once or twice. We usually use it to our advantage, either to leave early or ride Soarin' without a wait. But ohhhh the Peace on Earth holiday tag gets me in the feels...

IMG_7393 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

IMG_7392 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

IMG_7404 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

All in all, we think we enjoyed our meal and view better from Rose & Crown last year, but 1) we were right at the edge, not having to be behind a table, and 2) it was my first time seeing the Peace on Earth tag, and I had NO IDEA that they would be so intense, and it so amazed and startled me, whereas while still amazing, I was ready for the blasts.

After the show, we trickled on around World Showcase with the crowd, although I don't recall it being too bad. I did stop for a last bathroom break in Great Britain. Love the little holiday detail along the water.

Paused to take a pic of the tree then, all lit up.

I fully intend to get back on this report tonight, but as I know many of us (@Tuvalu and @lostpro9het at least) are owned by cats...this happened today :(

Our guy Simon likes to be outside...only problem is he likes to get in cat fights...needless to say, we will be attempting to make him an indoors only cat. He had to have surgery on a war wound today, and is now in the Cone of Shame

Simon is a unique cat, he is the friendliest cat I've ever met and despite being fully grown he acts like a kitten. Very energetic and playful, totally trusting of any human who feeds him or gives him attention.
In the grand scheme of things Simon's wound is a minor matter, he will heal in a matter of days. Of larger concern is that we took him in 10 months ago and this is the second time he has required surgery. He usually only wants to be inside for a matter of minutes and then can be quite vocal about his desire to go outside. And most importantly the only time we have ever seen him use the litterbox is when he has been confined to the bathroom the last time he needed surgery, and at that time when we trusted him enough to not confine him to the bathroom he used our bed instead of the litterbox. I fear these obstacles will be more challenging to overcome then his wound.

^^One MIGHT think that, but it's how he always acts, catnip or no!

Thanks, everyone, for the well-wishes for our Simon. He seems to be recovering just fine.

Friday, December 15th

After an only somewhat restful night (I had been fighting a cold on and off anyway, but something about hotel air and travel stress made it flare up again), I woke up quite stuffed up. I decided some hot tea was in order. It rather hit the spot though I like a bit of tea with my sugar, and I would have liked more sugar available, but it did the trick.
IMG_7413 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

This morning I had decided to go to DHS. I enjoyed a solo morning there on our last trip in September, and it gives DH an opportunity to sleep in a bit as he doesn't always feel the need to go there. No matter how little people say there is to do there, I could literally enjoy myself just walking around and taking in the atmosphere. I swear I should have been born in the 40s or 50s, the decor and ambiance is my jam.
I took the bus...boarded at the Grandstand stop
IMG_7415 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

On the way, I was joined in my seat by a mom, who wanted to sit and hold her maybe 3 or 4 year old son. He insisted on standing, and even though she said "no you need to sit", she didn't make him. He kept trying to climb up on the wall in front of us (we were in the first row of seats up on the elevated part). I used my "teacher eyes" quite a few times on him without his mom seeing. He would look at me periodically and see me looking at him, then he'd hide, but at least he'd stop for a bit.

I arrived not too long after the rope drop, only a couple of minutes I believe. Before entering the park, the streetmosphere characters were doing a skit right outside the ticket windows. I love that the truck was decorated for the holidays.

IMG_7417 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

LOVE LOVE LOVE. This reminds me of my tinsel trees (I have more than the 2 I brought on this trip). Decorations like these remind me of my Grandma's decor at the holidays. LOVE.
IMG_7418 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I went through the AP line rather quickly, and received my Star Wars pin that they were handing out for the opening of the new movie. (I wound up giving it to my nephew)
IMG_7419 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I took my time entering, taking pictures, and looking in shops.
IMG_7420 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I inquired at the information booth, then followed their directions into the correct shop to receive my AP holiday magnet. (Someone stole my regular one, or it fell off back in the spring) While in the shop I spotted--and purchased---the elusive ROSE GOLD EARS!!! I didn't take a pic at the time, but you'll see them in pictures later. YES!!!

I wandered down the street and kept snapping away at the gorgeousness that is DHS's old hollywood holiday decor. I eventually turned right onto Sunset.

IMG_7423 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

Waved at these CMs...I would have anyway, but they were waving Baymax's hand, and who could resist that? I think that they liked that I was taking their picture.

Hello, gorgeous! My first destination...
IMG_7425 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

It had the 13 minute wait but not really
IMG_7426 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I stopped for a couple of photopass pictures

Can anyone tell me what is on my forehead???
Screenshot_20171217-204958 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

ToT was awesome, as always! As was our elevator operator. One of the two little boys in the lower right corner said "this isn't terrifying, is it?" in his adorable British accent. To which the CM replied, "No, they changed the name to Tower of Sunshine and Rainbows"!! Had me giggling...
Screenshot_20171217-204748 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I walked over to check the single rider wait on RnRC. There wasn't a time displayed, so I asked the CM at the entrance if she knew the wait for single rider, and she said she didn't. I decided to move on, though now I regret not walking in and at least estimating from there. Oh well.

Walking back up Sunset, I ended up walking step-for-step beside an executive-type CM. We walked for awhile together, until out of nowhere he says "rose. gold." and holds out his fist for a fist bump! To which I said "finally, yes!" as I fistbumped him. (without thinking about it, I did it with my hand with my diamond...hope I didn't hurt him)

Following my DHS solo morning routine (and using up those Starbucks gift cards @TrolleyFollower91 )
I stopped to get a Butterfinger cupcake. (I did take a picture, with my phone, but now can't seem to locate it) They were very busy, as usual, and were out of napkins at the station. I had to wait for someone to go get more...took 5 or more minutes, and I think most of that time was her trying to get back through the crowd. I took my cupcake and water to the seating area behind, and took my time enjoying (read: EATING EVERY LAST BITE) of my cupcake.

There was a photopass photographer there taking a family's pictures, so I stood in line near her, and then another family stood behind me. We watched as a man with a little girl on his shoulders walked right between the photographer and the family, and never even noticed that he was interrupting a photo...

After enjoying this area for awhile, I walked past Star Tours and toward the construction. I'll be the first to admit, I have no idea how it is all going to work together, theme wise and flow wise, but I trust it'll work.

IMG_7440 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I toyed with the idea of seeing the Frozen sing-a-long. I've seen it a few times and do enjoy it, and thought I'd read that they add a holiday overlay (and now know this is true), but ultimately decided that I should get back to the resort, to make sure DH got up and moving and didn't sleep his trip away. I now regret not seeing it, and also regret not staying long enough to get a cobb salad at the Brown Derby Lounge. Oh well. I did walk back around Echo Lake, and also through some shops on my way out.

I like how the umbrellas looked like Christmas trees

Overall, I had a very pleasant morning in one of my favorite parks
IMG_7444 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

I walked to the bus stop for Saratoga Springs, and was (I thought) the only person there. An Old Key West bus was at the stop next to me. I had only been waiting maybe 2 minutes when an unmarked bus pulled up to our stop...but then opened the door and asked where I was heading, and I told him. He said he was going to OKW. Then an older gentleman, who apparently was also waiting for Saratoga said "there have been 4 buses for OKW, and none for SS". The driver said that he will let someone know, but just then, the woman at the transportation stand pointed to a van, and said "he'll take you to SS". So this older man and I got a personal ride to SS! We chatted about the snow the north was getting, and how Atlanta had gotten a bit recently. It was a very nice ride back to the resort.

Happy New Year everyone! Still chugging along...

When I arrived back at the room, DH was surprised how early I was back. It was only around 11. But he got up and ready (he had been up during some of the time that I was gone, but then laid back down just prior to me returning), with the plan being to find the walking path to Disney Springs for some lunch and to see the Tree Trail.

We consulted the trusty map of Saratoga Springs that I carried with us during our trip, and decided to take the first bus that arrived at the Grandstand, and got off at the Carousel stop (if I recall correctly). We looked on the "You are here" map to get our bearings, and saw that the path had to be behind the bus stop. Once we got there, we noticed signs:

OK apologies for 2 things:
1. the onslaught of Tree Trail pictures
2. we didn't realize it until a few trees in that we were going through the trail backwards (in our defense, the bridge sort of led into the end of the trail)

One of the big Disney Springs trees:
IMG_7489 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

So, as we walked along, looking for where we wanted to try some lunch, we were approached by a DVC guy. Ya know, the one we all try to avoid making eye contact with lest you be pulled into a conversation which leads to a DVC press...well, I wasn't paying attention, and he hopped over and shook our hands. Great. But the hilarious thing is, he noticed DH's shirt. He was wearing his Walter White shirt that has sort of a castle behind it, but made out of chemistry equipment. The DVC guy said "I like your shirt, is that your name?" (if you're a Breaking Bad fan, you'll also enjoy that DH later said that he should've replied "yes and I am the one who knocks")

We wanted to try something at BB Wolf's sausage company, so I got the Latin Dog, and DH got the house-made pretzel braid.
IMG_7492 by Amber Zaremsky, on Flickr

The guy who took our order there also complimented DH's shirt, so we told him what the DVC guy had said and he laughed, shaking his head.

We found a table nearby, and enjoyed our food (both items were good). We noticed a guy in line wearing PJ pants, wearing a shirt that said "To: Women
From: God"

:hilarious:

What made this sight even worse (better?) was that he was scratching his behind.

:hilarious::hilarious:

Not all at once, ladies!
