It's a Small World Updates?

They're re-configuring the load/unload area to provide more efficient loading and unloading. No show changes have been reported.

I have also heard that each year when it goes down for refurbishment that they redo all the hair on the dolls. Since the ride has lots of water and can sometimes have some humidity, the yarn used for the hair on the dolls expands, so they essentially get a "hair cut".

I'm not sure if this is 100% true, or if they are using this time to take care of that business as well, but I found it interesting to hear.

No that's true. I'm sure that general maintenance is taking place during the refurb as well...

The queue is being reconfigured so that the entrance and exit are on seperate ends of the ride for better traffic flow. The entrance will remain on the left side of the attraction to absorb some of the congestion in between Small World and Peter Pan's Flight, while the exit will be on the opposite side opening up next to Pinnochio's Village Haus. The exit may or may not open into the restaurant itself, if it does, it will be something resembling Country Bear Jamboree's exit next to Peco's Bill Cafe. As far as the ride itself goes, the "hair cut" rumor is true, although it is also often exaggerated quite a bit. The dolls do get routine touch-ups during refurbishment, and trimming staggering hair is one of those tasks. Also, there has been Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland character merchandise for sale in Fantasyland bearing the likeness of "Small World" characters. So there is strong speculation that these characters may be added to the original attraction in an effort to provide something new for the ride. Hope everyone enjoys the updates!

It is my Favorite ride at MK...It always has been. Last time we were there we went to MK the day it closed. It was a bummer.

Will the bridge (at the exit prior to refurb) be used as the entrance.... literally swapping the exit and entrance?

I'm thinking that's their only option if they want to reconfigure the load/unload. Otherwise it'd be a MAJOR reconstruction job to build a new ramp on the unload side to get it up and over the canal (and most likely ruining the view from Village Haus' windows).

There's definitely been a real-life learning curve with traffic flow at this attraction the past 5 or 6 years. Entrance and Exit used to be at opposite ends of the exterior facade. But the entrance was directly across from Peter Pan. They moved the entrance to the far end, added the stroller parking area. But then they ran into the opposing traffic problems of entrance/exit/stroller all being in the same area. Sounds like they now want to do what they probably should have done during the first refurb.

Oh! I am not sure if not show changes are a good thing or a bad thing! hahaha! Thanks for the update!

Personally, I think it would be a good thing if they did what they did in CA and added in the Disney characters.

Of course, this draws the instant ire of some of the more vocal "fans", but the truth is that is works very elegantly and feels completely organic to the experience. In no way are the characters intrusive, and they are done in IASW style. Although a few are obvious, many of them you have to actually look for to get.

I do hope it happens sometime in the next few years, after FLE is completed.

IASW is a work of modern pop art by the brilliant Mary Blair. It was a tragedy that her creations were intruded upon by disney characters. Many disney characters are works of art in their own right, but shouldn't be forcefed into someone elses creation.

Anyone for adding huck finn to the mona lisa?

I rarely post often on this site, but even I have to dust off the old screen name to say how short-sighted your vision is on this one. Great care was taken to ensure the addition of the characters COMPLIMENTED Mary Blair's wonderful art. There's absolutely nothing obtrusive about it - and in some cases, it may take a few rides to even spot a few of them. It's very, very well done.

Is it safe to assume you have not been on the HDKL or new-ish-ly refurbished Disneyland ride in person yet?

Are you honestly comparing a single work of art to an entire attraction? You do realize how absurd that sounds, right?

While the dolls are Blair creations, the entire attraction is not. Moreover, Blair was an employee/independent contractor of TWDC employed to create these dolls to be placed within an attraction. The dolls that Blair created don't stand alone as anything significant. The entire attraction does. Moreover, given the very nature of attractions (fluid) versus single paintings (non-fluid), the analogy is faulty.

The dolls fit and work well and breathe some new life into the attraction. Not that it was stale before, but they ensure it won't be anytime soon.
