I think it was TomFitzgerald who was behind both of the...umm....inferior versions of the ride.
Pretty sure...but I could be wrong.

Kevin Rafferty was involved, too.

(I'm not using initials, since most of these guys are fairly well known.)

Wasn't a young Tom Fitzferald the imagineer welding and talking on the video phone in Horizons?

Maybe thats all it is, hopefully :lookaroun

FYI, I picked up the "It's a Small World" app if for no other reason than my 3 year old absolutely loves the ride, so I knew it would be a hit with her.

There are basically two different things you can do in the app:

1. You can listen to the song, and read along with the words across the bottom. While the song plays, there's a graphic of a handful of kids laying on a hill, staring up at the sky. Wherever you touch in the sky, a firework explodes.

2. This one is sort of weird. You can travel between scenes that slowly scroll across. The scenes are definitely modeled after the different rooms on the ride, but not exactly. For example, there's a rainforest room with a hippo and so forth, but it's not THE hippo. In these different scenes, virtually everything you touch reacts. Touch the hippo, for example, and he comes out of the water a bit and spits water in front of him. Touch a doll holding a trumpet and he blows the horn. The odd thing is... The song isn't sung in this mode. An instrumental version plays in the background, but there are no words... And even more oddly, each time you enter a room, one single line from the song is SPOKEN... Not sung. And it's not timed in connection with the music at all. So for example, when you enter the rainforest room, it might say "There's so much that we share." in a child's voice. That's all it says. Then if you play around in the room for 5 minutes, and go to another, it'll be another line, SPOKEN, from the song. You move between rooms in a hot air balloon.

Those are the two things you can do on the app. That's it. No building a doll, nothing like that.

For $3.99, I was disappointed. That's expensive for what you get. My 3 year old that LOVES the ride was bored after about 8 or 9 minutes and switched over to Monkey Lunchbox.

EDIT TO ADD: Looking at the leaked concept art, the app is DEFINITELY NOT RELATED. Not at all, not one bit.

Yep. He's come quite a ways since then, career wise at WDI.

If you're using an iPad and haven't downloaded it yet, I highly recommend the Disneyland Explorer app. There's a fun little interactive element with Small World, as well as some other really fun little games and videos, etc. And the Explorer app is free (a definite improvement over $3.99).

"Whenever I go on a ride, I'm always thinking of what's wrong with the thing and how it can be improved." - Walt Disney

And maybe, just maybe, that's what they plan on doing to Small World. It could turn out tremendous, or it could completely fail. Remember - all changes can be reversible (Enchanted Tiki Room)

Problem is, if it is a complete fail, we will be stuck with it for YEARS before they change it, see Tiki Room, Imagination......

So you would rather them not take the risk for possibly a better ride and leave it as the semi-stale ride it's been for the past 40 years? I see your point but maybe it's time for change.

Not what I was saying.. i was saying if they try to update the ride, they have to do it right... or else we are stuck with a giant mistake in a classic ride for 10 or more years... So the change you said they can always do won't be done right away and we then are stuck with garbage..

And we need to face it, the Tiki Room wouldn't have been changed if there wasn't a fire... We'd still have Under New Management or a closed Tiki Room...

Fact is though, there isn't any announcement on Small World... We are going off concept art on SK... The art looks like garbage, but it is only just art right now... IF they do something with Small World, let's see what they do... Hopefully they do it right, but track records lately is they will screw it up...
