Trip Report It's a Great Big Beautiful California- COMPLETED

OK...I would like to first apologize for all of the trip reports I have neglected. Work was chaos, the holidays consumed my world, and well...life happened...a lot. But...I will do my best to do more reading and commenting in the near future.

I also have a trip report of my own to bring you...a trip that I still can't believe has come and gone. The reporting is also going to take a little bit longer since I'm doing something a bit different this time. I'm going to be posting on here as well as another forum (I know...such a traitor), so it's going to be a more time consuming process.

Now, for those of you who don't know me and aren't familiar with my trip reports...I'm Sandy ... aka HouCuseChickie (and also TiggerTrigger in a few other places). Obviously, I'm the one with the hat and glasses!

Sorry, huge pictures. I borrowed them from my Facebook galleries.

And another huge picture, but these are our girls (younger one pictured with me above)...

That's Kendall (age 9) on the left and Sammie (age 7 and very toothless) on the right. It's hard to believe these two were just 4 and 2 on my first trip report.

Finally, we've got DH...who will be referred to as such throughout, unless I slip up. LOL. He probably wouldn't be too happy that I'm using this pic, but this was him at the end of "Movember" after growing out his moustache. We're all happy that he shaved it off on December 1st.

So, that's us...but it's been a while since I did anything with my PTR, so some refreshers and updates on the details of the trip...especially the final details. And for those of you who have seen my previous reports, I promise you tons and tons of pics- and even a few videos, but let's recap a bit with the plan and get up to date on some things.

This all started as a "Let's go to Disneyland for the 60th anniversary festivities" trip, which spiraled into so much more. DH reminded me (aka- total guilt trip) that I'd promised him a ski trip. Well, the only way I could get this to work with Disneyland and not have it get too crazy with the budget (or so I thought) was to ski in California. So, the Big Bear- Mammoth-Tahoe debate was started and Mammoth won. All my CA friends said it was better skiing than Big Bear and it's closer and a smidge cheaper than Tahoe.

Plans and costs started to get crazy as dates and transportation started to factor in. We were planning on Disneyland from December 27th-31st and Mammoth on December 31st-January 3rd. In fact, this is what we had the girls believing were our vacay dates until the very end (more on that in a bit). But...I remembered how my parents saved a ton flying on Christmas last year and the dog's boarding facility would take her no later than December 23rd, so leaving on Christmas day started to sound like the better plan. In fact, the one-way cost of our Christmas day flights was something like $150 cheaper per person than the flight I was eyeing for the 27th. So, a Christmas day departure became a reality...and the trip grew by 2 days. But before all was said and done, the trip grew by 1 more day. January 3rd was a Sunday and flights were much more expensive than January 4th. The kids were still off from school on the 4th, so we extended the trip 1 more day. We also decided the extended trip would be the kids' big Christmas present. More on that coming up.

Somewhere in the process of this, as I was planning details of our drive to Mammoth, I found out that California has really strict tire chain laws during winter. Couple that with the taxes that can double the cost of your rental and I decided to bite the bullet and fly from LA to Mammoth. I waited and waited for prices to drop back to the lows I'd seen earlier in the year and by late September, it finally happened. Or so I thought. Just days before the trip, I realized I booked our air in reverse. Instead of LA to Mammoth, I booked Mammoth to LA. I was under a lot of stress at work at the time of this booking and even though I checked things at least 5 or 6 times, I misread all of it. It would have cost more than twice the price of those flights to change everything, so we just ate the cost, booked a rental, came up with a plan for the tire chains, and nervously prayed we wouldn't need to use our plan. There are a couple of silver linings with this that will come at the end of the report.

Now here's where some of the biggest fun came in during the pre-trip time. In late November/early December, it hit me that I really needed a plan to give the girls all of their trip gifts as well as the big gift. We'd be leaving for the airport before 7am on Christmas morning, so there was no time for anything but the big gift that day. Now, we're a dual religion household and between me celebrating Hanukkah and DH celebrating Christmas...I figured we could work it all out with that. Before looking at the calendar, I decided we'd do gifts for the 8 nights of Hanukkah and the 12 days of Christmas. I just didn't realize that it would all match up perfectly so we'd have 20 straight days of gifts. It may sound like a lot, but it was all trip related stuff...stuff to show the girls that $ goes into the fun stuff and the necessities... and that it can be just as fun (if not more) to have it all be part of amazing experiences. Sammie still believes in Santa, so I also had to make it believable. So, I wrote a rhyming letter from Santa talking about how the Christmas gift is so big that DH and I would need to play elves for 11 of the 12 days of Christmas. It even had Santa's signature and the North Pole seal.

During Hanukkah, the kids got things like snow boots, Disney Vans, ski bibs, winter gear, clothes, etc. The 12 days of Christmas were a bit more fun. We started out with character hats for autographs like they requested when we were at the GF back in August, a whale watching cruise, made with the magic wands, a GoPro style camera to record their adventures, stockings full of pins/new lanyards/lip balms/etc., and one of my fave days- Star Wars tickets. We gifted them Star Wars tickets for the trip on the day the movie opened, but it's how we did it that made it a ton of fun. Back in 2014, we built lightsabers for them in DHS and they've held up really well. So, on Dec 18th, while the girls were eating breakfast, I came out of the bedroom wearing one of those audio Chewbacca mask and challenged DH to a lightsaber battle with Sammie's purple lightsaber. DH had Kendall's red one hidden under the couch and we battled it out in the living room. It would eventually hit the kids that they were seeing the movie, but initially, they were more interested in the mask. In fact, here's Sammie (as Chewbacca) wishing everyone a very merry Christmas.

My MIL almost ruined the surprise on Christmas Eve, but thankfully the kids didn't hear and they went to bed totally clueless. Before they woke up, I modified the countdown calendar they'd been using to show the 25th instead of the 27th as our departure day, had a new letter from Santa revealing the surprise, and put the packed bags around the tree- with bows on their packed carry ons. What's really amazing is that when the focus for gifts was shifted away from toys, the only thing the girls were really wishing for this Christmas was for the trip to get here sooner. So, they actually received their Christmas wish.

The girls were so tired when we woke up them up and were reading without really comprehending when they first read Santa's note, but they read it a second time- it all clicked- and we had some utterly giddy girls.

Coming up...Christmas Day- Travel Day

We're inside now, but it's such a strange feeling with how different it all looks from the WDW version...

23830104589_631a74f0f1_z.jpg

I know...a chandelier doesn't fully convey this...but it just felt strange to be in a garden district feeling structure when you're used to it feeling like the WDW style.

I got sort of blurry pic in the stretching room...

24115314371_13715c8f07_z.jpg

We also had a ride stoppage right near Zero's bone area...

23571093483_5bdcb8bfeb_z.jpg

We had another stop in front of Leota, but it started back up just as I was snapping the pic.

24197882655_da197e7b57_z.jpg

By the time we got to the graveyard, I was really missing the traditional Haunted Mansion. I was happy to have the chance to see the holiday version and Sammie loved it, but I was over it before it even ended. By the time we got to Little Sally...I was drowning her out with Little Leota in my head. At least they had a few cute Zero moments that helped it for me, but never again will I be jealous of DL for this one. Now, I don't want you to think this is all negative. Disneyland made sure to leave one very special ghost on display during the holiday overlay. Yes, the Hatbox Ghost was left in his spot in the mansion in all his glory. And I may or may not have squealed "HATBOX GHOST!" as we passed him.

Coming up...playing in the castle, a wild ride to nowhere in particular, cats and dynamite, and downtime before dinner

Really enjoying your trip report so far! I knew the façade of Small World got a holiday overlay, but I guess I didn't realize that the inside does too, so pretty. We were there about 5 years ago, and I also really like the addition of the characters on the ride. I think its subtle enough that it works.

Also - just dying over the new Small World Dooney. I've never been crazy for those bags, there are a couple I've kind of liked, but that one is fabulous.

Looking forward to reading more . . .

Thanks! They change over the song a bit as well. I was worried I'd miss the standard decor and song, but this just really enhanced the whole attraction/experience. I know people initially balked at the addition of the characters, but it worked for me and the kids really enjoyed this aspect. They were talking about how they wished WDW would do this to theirs.

What's funny is the Beauty and the Beast bag below is the one that really has people drooling. I am not really into princesses, so I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that I can get a Small World one. I have a handful of the Disney Dooney bags, but as you can tell from the TR, I really try to limit myself to bags I love. There are some ladies in some of my Facebook groups that take pictures of their Dooney bag families...with like 60+ bags. I just don't like enough of them to do that + I'd rather have more $ for vacation! :D

Dec 28th continued...

At this point we have no real plans, but we head off to find some new things to do and explore. I tried to convince DH to go to the Tiki Room because it only had a 5 minute wait and he kept trying to tell me that's not right because he saw a long line. I kept telling him that was the line for Dole Whips, but go on...don't trust the knowledge of the person who is the Disney fanatic and does all of the planning and research. So, we start walking away from Adventureland...

24115293571_fbbbae53bb_z.jpg
[

Pass by the Golden Horseshoe...

23830071029_1fe4ca784d_z.jpg

And then we hit a snag in our walking plans. We were rerouted back into the front part of Adventureland as sort of a crowd management plan. It may have also been parade related as parts of the hub were completely roped off from entry, but we could hear a CM yelling that it's faster this way.

24197862865_9d740d3ee1_z.jpg

We make our way back towards the castle and realize the roping was really all about crowds, but I'm still not sure how much it helped. Oh well, we were heading to the castle...something we'd only seen from afar at this point.

I think this is my favorite castle pic of the trip...

23830032459_506720446f_z.jpg

I get everyone to slow down a bit because the reality is that wherever we're heading is going to have a wait, so there's no reason to rush to avoid a building line. So, I take more pics around the castle.

The whole thing is actually pretty neat and some of the animated scenes are cool. My fave was where the good fairies are putting everyone to sleep and putting out the lights (candles).

And we're back out...

23902127340_d49c112be2_z.jpg

The girls noticed BBB. While Kendall still likes princesses, neither one has any desire to do the whole dress up thing...so, I'm glad I got it in a few times when they were younger. I also noticed at DL that not as many girls were walking around all done up from BBB. In fact, I just didn't see a ton of princess dresses on kids in general. In some ways it was sad, but in others...it was nice to not see a sea of Elsas like we did at WDW in 2014.

23570911703_7cae356c0f_z.jpg

We start walking through Fantasyland because I have a plan.

And no, it's not to get in the crazy long line for Peter Pan. Nope, we're going to ride the original Mr. Toad.

23570890633_d4cab25b84_z.jpg

I think the wait was listed at either 40 or 45 minutes when we got in line. Considering the carousel was something like a 35 minute wait, this seemed like the best plan. Plus, I'm the only one in our family who had ever ridden WDW's Mr. Toad before it was removed. While I think the wait time was accurate, it is an old school line that winds around in a very small space with very little going on. So, aside from joking about where Mr. Toad goes in this ride (no particular place...ahem), I just took pics of whatever I could to pass the time.

Like crowds and Dumbo...

These are also really good examples of what they mean when they tell you DL is smaller and there's not as much space between things. We have only moved through a very small area and look at all we can see from this spot.

Can also see Snow White...

All of the Disneyland attractions have these signs. I'm guessing it's some kind of CA law and it's a compliance matter to post this, but I have seen blogs where people have gone to City Hall in the park to see an attraction certificate.

Blurry...but you can kind of make out the flames on the right of the nowhere in particular that we'll be heading...

23569349804_4720a9e583_z.jpg

Thankfully, the line doesn't pull that bait and switch and snake you around inside. Once you're in, there's very little waiting before riding. I don't think DH cared for it, but the kids were amused.

Once we're out, I check the app and it looks like BTMRR recently opened and the wait was 'only' about 45 minutes. Hey, in these crowds...45 min is nothing. So, we walk briskly towards that area and I attempt to take pics on the way.

We considered fast passes, but the return time was just too late...so we got in line and I started taking pics...

All of this was while looking into Rancho del Zocalo, but now we're getting into the actual queue area...

23829652149_5124f066de_z.jpg

As we're in the early phases of the queue, I spot something I wasn't sure that we'd get to see while at DL.

Some of you may know that Disneyland has a population of cats that's allowed to live there as sort of a natural pest control method for the park. There are quite a few cats in the park, but since we've been back, I've found a number of pics of this particular cat - ALWAYS in the BTMRR area and per the Cats of Disneyland group on Instagram, she's been named Becky. And it's funny because everyone was going nuts taking pics of this cat since it's a treat to spot one of the cats of Disneyland.

So, we keep making our way through the queue...

24114850821_749ffba847_z.jpg

(In case you were wondering what the official acronym is...the BTMRR on this clock kind of seals it)

A little late, but they finally have a CM out there with a line sign. Sadly, they need these in A LOT of areas of the park.

Looks like we're getting there...but not even close...

The only thing that really sets this apart from the WDW version is the dynamite scene. Beyond that...it's pretty much an even playing field; however, I give an edge to the one at WDW because of the views of Cinderella Castle from their BTMRR.

So, it's time to start walking and dealing with crowds again...

We still had around an hour and half until our dinner reservations at Blue Bayou, but DH had done something to his ankle and I was really concerned that we'd be too tired to watch Disneyland Forever at 9:30 and the 10:45 Paint the Night if we didn't get some rest. So, we found a table down along the water at the Hungry Bear and just relaxed. It was getting dark and we were in a covered area that was already a bit cooler, so I also had everyone layer up a bit while we were down there. I only took one pic as we relaxed because we mainly just took turns closing our eyes.

23901631320_28694fb45c_z.jpg

I was also kind of frustrated because DH started asking why we weren't going to see Fantasmic. MONTHS and MONTHS ago I had asked him about this. I told him we could shift Blue Bayou to our third night and do the package, but he said he had no desire to see it back then. We are not fans of the WDW version, but I did tell him that DL's is supposed to be amazing and loved by many who share our feelings about WDW's. Nope...didn't want to see it. So, I didn't book it. But now here we are and he's got an idea of where it all goes down and how cool it looked like it could be just based on the Rivers of America area and he was now having second thoughts. I told him not tonight, but maybe on Wednesday if we have the energy. And then I closed my eyes and tried to forget all about it!

Coming up...NOLA in CA, Blue Bayou Blues, and Claiming the Curb

Thanks for the Mr. Toad pictures, and I really like your picture of the wreath swag of Rancho del Zocalo. We didn't do Mr. Toad at all this time, so I liked seeing a little something of it. I hope you did get to do Fantasmic at DL, it is so much better than WDW's (although I like the seating better at WDW). I haven't seen myself in any of your pictures yet! :)

Lovin' all your pictures, especially the lights! That Beauty and the Beast Dooney is cute, but I agree - it must be total love before I spend any more money on them. One from WDW, one from DL and one from DCL is enough for me.

We enjoyed the Grotto. The song from the wishing well and the fish rising were over-the-top cool.

I laughed when you quoted the CMs saying that going through Adventureland was the quickest way. Well, when there are no other alternatives, yep, that's the quickest way.

Urg to the hubby! I totally empathize!

We never saw any cats. :( But then again, we didn't know exactly where to look.

December 25th continued...

So, we were all dressed, car packed up, and out the door before 7am central time. As we approached Houston Hobby, I saw the EcoPark was full, so I was really grateful for the news making a big deal about this and the crazy parking situation over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Not only did it push me to make a parking reservation at the Parking Spot to avoid any travel day parking nightmares, it made me discover that the airport economy lot was significantly more expensive.

We had a bit of an issue when checking our luggage. DH decided to check the bag with the girls' boosters (instead of gate check) and neglected to put a tag with our info on that bag. It caused me to keep better track of our baggage claim tickets, which would be an omen for other reasons once we were in LA. But for now, I was just happy that our flight was on time...

23553948204_a92b3193a7_z.jpg

Security, which is usually a crazy long line at Hobby, was very light and we wound up at our gate with a ton of time to spare. Of course, better early than late in these cases.

In my boredom, I amused myself in a variety of stupid ways...including taking a pic of my carry on next to my purse, just to illustrate how silly it is that my purge was bigger than my carry on. I mean, the darn thing didn't even fit in the frame!

24074098782_172d9ed6fb_z.jpg

It was time to board, but we were nearly halfway into boarding group B...even though I checked in right at 24 hours on the dot. The Southwest guy at the gate told us to pre-board because of Sammie, so I wasn't going to argue that she was a year older than their 6 and under policy. We decided to split, so DH sat with Kendall and I got to sit with Sams.

24182120075_852528d7b6_z.jpg

After singing Christmas carols with the crew and getting candy canes. we played Candy Crush for a chunk of the time. We started spending more time looking out the window as we flew over the massive wind farm in west Texas. It was also around this time that Sammie complained she was dizzy. I thought maybe she was hungry, possibly a bit tired, and even recovering from the excitement of an unexpected travel day, but no...she was just air sick and the worst happened just as we were prepping to land for our stop in Albuquerque. Fun. Actually, she had the bag and did what she needed to do without fuss. So we were good.

We had other drama in Albuquerque. Kendall lost her Donald Duck Tsum Tsum hair tie from Japan and there were a lot of tears. Not a major issue, but I was ticked because we've had so many issues like this of late. I know...she's 9.

So, I swapped seats with Sammie, put my phone into airplane mode, and started snapping pics.

Albuquerque from the airport gate...

As we continued flying west, I started seeing areas that may or may not have been around Vegas, but as soon as I saw the terrain look like this...

23814355449_a53cff2bed_z.jpg

23555398733_f6b8a47243_z.jpg

...I knew we were getting closer to LA. Back on our 2003 CA trip, we actually drove from Vegas to LA and back. We also used to go to Vegas every year. So, you kind of get a good feel for the looks of things after you've driven and flown a route a number of times.

It also wasn't long until the sprawl of LA was in view. Now, I grew up in NJ (NY metro area), so I've seen my fair share of large city urban sprawl and Houston isn't exactly tiny, but LA's suburbia just goes on and on. Downtown LA came into view shortly after this...

24156080846_519564325c_z.jpg

I felt bad because one of Kendall's big wishes was to see the Hollywood sign. We'll make that wish come true in the coming days, but she was on the wrong side of the plane to see it as we were landing...

24099579131_2dbac4923f_z.jpg

And we're on the ground.

23555405243_2138d83237_z.jpg

We had moved up to the front rows of the plane when in Albuquerque, so it we didn't have to wait long to get off the plane and make our way to baggage. Baggage was interesting.

As we were trying to figure out which carousel would have our bags, DH yelled to me, "Aren't those some of our bags?" Unfortunately, he wasn't looking at a baggage carousel. Three of our six bags were sitting in a roped off area for unclaimed bags from recent flights. The man working in the area had a heavy Caribbean accent, but was very pleasant and said this was all he had and that half of our bags probably flew ahead of us. Thankfully, I had those claim tickets saved in a good spot b/c of DH not labeling the booster seat bag. We waited for a while, but the same man called our flight for the carousel directly in front of us and our other three bags came out.

After finding the correct rental car reservation info (I had a lot of paperwork), we dragged our 6 checked bags, 4 carry ons, and my purse to the shuttle. This became a theme everywhere we went on a travel day...our parade of luggage. I have a no laundry on vacation rule and we were gone for close to 2 weeks, so we had a lot of stuff.

On the bus to the rental place, I heard several people telling stories of them being out of cars. My anxiety kicked up and I started to think that my idea of driving into Hollywood after hotel check in wasn't going to happen. When we arrived, the line was insanely long and slow moving. Now, some of the issue was people without reservations and some was people without insurance that didn't like the rental co's insurance terms, but others were just slow. And poor DH was stuck with the stir crazy girls this whole time.

To add insult to injury, when I got to the front of the line, I was told to go to a video kiosk for service...and it was glitchy. When it did start working, I was helped by a guy who reminded me a bit of Jake from State Farm. Still, he was good and told us to just head out to the lot and pick a car from the category I booked. OK...seems simple enough.

So, we drag all of our bags outside, but there are only 2 cars out there...and while they were full sized cars...they were both circa 1995. I know it's silly, but I actually tried to open one of them just in case this was really what they meant. Yeah- it was locked and after closer inspection, it as full of someone's personal items. So, we went inside and after making 3 separate demands to talk to a manager, we were told that our best chance of getting a car was to stand in the middle of the lot, wait for them to be pulled in, and run to the one that seems good. Really!?!?!? Back in line, we had joked about the Seinfeld bit on car rentals and how they could make the reservation, but didn't know how to keep the reservation. It was now feeling like a really sick joke! But we needed a car, so we dragged our bags out and I got ready to run at the first sight of a full sized car.

After about 5-10 minutes, 3 full sized cars pulled in at the same time and we were one of 5 families waiting that made a run for them. We were very civilized...going in order of arrival, but we were one of two families needing a lot of trunk space...so selection was key. We picked a Camry. DH hated the car and I wasn't a huge fan, but we made it work. I came pretty close to picking up the back end of the car by trying to force in the bags, but we needed to make it work. While I normally drive a larger mid-sized SUV and DH has a truck (i.e. space at home is never an issue) I have tested our bags in other mid sized vehicles before and they've fit (even though it was a tight squeeze). In this case, we wound up having to put a couple of the checked bags in the back with the girls. Oh well, this would be our car until it was time to head up to Mammoth.

Our hotel for our first two nights was actually pretty close to LAX. We wasted so much time with the baggage and stupid car that it was nearly dinner time, so at least we had a quick drive. I had the toughest time with lodging for this portion of the trip. Queen beds are a must for us and the only option I could find that wasn't insane in price or location was a Residence Inn in Manhattan Beach. I had considered the Beverly Hilton as prices weren't too bad and it would be a cool place to stay, but everything they were showing had double beds. If I refuse to stay at WDW value resorts because of the double bed situation, I couldn't push that aside because it's a well known spot in Beverly Hills. Yeah- I know...it still would have been cool, but I wanted to sleep!

By the time we got settled in the room, it was past dinner time...so in other words, we were starving. With it being Christmas night, our options were beyond limited. I mean, I couldn't even go to the grocery store to make food in our room's kitchen. I was hoping to go to In N Out Burger as I'm the only one who has eaten there, but those were closed too. The only thing we could find was an IHOP, so that would be our Christmas dinner. It was packed, but they had all kinds of decorations, they were blasting the Christmas music, and we were just happy to be there safely and have a place to eat. And while they don't spike them, the special hot cocoa they were serving really hit the spot.

24182175335_9d9779d997_z.jpg

We got back to the room, waited for housekeeping to fix a situation with bedding, and got the girls to sleep. While we gained two hours, it would still be an early start the next day (next week really) and the kids were still on Central time, so they were out.

It felt strange to be away on Christmas, but I did bring one little piece of Christmas decor from home to make it feel more festive while we were on vacation...

Coming up: December 26th: Wind vs. Whales, PCH Trends, In search of the Hollywood Sign, and a mixed evening...oh yea, and the start of A LOT more pictures.

I was kind of shocked that some of the people on our cruise had been feeding gulls back at the dock. I mean, nothing like attracting a bunch of birds that are likely to poop all over your heads.

So, we still weren't seeing any whales or dolphins, so I took more pics of the coast. At least the cave was pretty cool and I'm pretty sure there are more sea lions sunning themselves on rocks in some of these.

Unfortunately, they were all business. They were in search of food and had no desire to play with us. Now, I've been in the gulf and the Atlantic and had playful dolphins follow our boat. I guess with their boat, when the dolphins are playing, they really respond to the kids in the glass pontoons and they turn on their various devices so you can hear the dolphins.

I know it's hard to tell, but this is a sea lion we also saw swimming out there...

Probably too late to see whales in the LA coastal area. By this time of the year, they should have already made it to Baja to winter. Point Loma in San Diego is one of the best whale watching sites along the Southern CA coast - we didn't see any when we where there late in December.

But love your photos - they are making me homesick. :(

Thanks! I really wanted them to ride it since I don't know when we'll be back to DL and obviously, there are no opportunities for them to experience it at WDW (anymore). I really liked Rancho del Zocalo's decorations and decor. I know I took more pics later on in the trip.

Seating does give the WDW Fantasmic some of an advantage. I think you guys arrived on the 29th, so you might not be there yet at this stage of my pics. I know I was looking in yours, but last time I checked ... you were on NYE and we were on our way up to Mammoth at that point. We were only in DL briefly on the 29th, but were there all day on the 30th, so there's still the chance.

THNX for the Mr. Toad pics it was so sad when ours left
 Mr. Toad getting the ax gives me mixed feelings - torn between him and Pooh. With limited space, given the choice, Pooh wins for me.

I have odd feelings about the Mr. Toad situation. It wasn't one of our must do rides when I was a kid, but we did ride it a couple of times...so it had that nostalgia factor for me. HOWEVER...the last time I rode Mr. Toad is burned in my memory. It was 1996, I was living in FL and had started seeing this guy who decided to take me to WDW for the weekend for our 3rd date. He was also a big Disney fan, but he lied about staying at the Contemporary to get free parking (before they really cracked down on this), he didn't get my aversion to turkey legs- trying to force one on me for lunch, he came off as strange during character M&Gs, and he was utterly gaga over Mr. Toad. DH and I went in 1998, before Mr. Toad closed, and I know we didn't ride it. It was tainted by memories of "Strange Mike." Still, the DL one is an opening day attraction (even though it had a major redo in the 80s), so it's one of those rides that has some Walt DNA so to speak.

Lovin' all your pictures, especially the lights! That Beauty and the Beast Dooney is cute, but I agree - it must be total love before I spend any more money on them. One from WDW, one from DL and one from DCL is enough for me.

Urg to the hubby! I totally empathize!

We never saw any cats. :( But then again, we didn't know exactly where to look.

I even have a favorite light from this trip...but not there yet!

Which ones did you get at DL and on DCL?

Sadly, that pic is about as close as we got. That's the funny thing about all of those little details...you get caught up in some and then miss others.

Yeah...no choices, so I guess they were right. The only way is the fastest way! I did feel for them. It was so horribly crowded. On one hand, DL's size is great because you can easily get from pt A to pt B with very little walking, but you start missing the space in WDW when you see lines with no place to go but into the crushing crowds in the area.

I tried not to get on his case too much, but we had this big discussion before the trip how he's become too sedentary and how he should at least do something to prep for skiing. Who knew just plain old walking would take its toll.

Spotting this cat was a total surprise. I honestly was thinking we wouldn't see a single cat. I think DH and the kids thought I was nuts for getting so excited over a cat, but it was a good story for the girls.

RE: LA sprawl. The standing joke is that LA is a bunch of suburbs trying to be a city (so said the kid who grew up in one of them). Brave of you to fly into LAX; I would have chosen John Wayne. Anything to avoid LAX.

But love your photos - they are making me homesick. :(

I had considered John Wayne, but there was a significant price difference. LAX really wasn't that bad. I mean, I flew in and out of Newark for a chunk of my life and did a lot of flying through Atlanta and O'Hare, so I figured we could handle it. I can't really fault LAX for our bags being split as that was done in Houston.

I searched pics on Flickr of Sedona and what we saw in the air looked a lot like that...so, I'm just going to assume we were around that area. If not...whatever it was is very pretty :D

They had said the gray whale migration season for that area goes from about mid Dec to mid Jan, but obviously, I have no prior experience with this. I know my coworker, who was in the area around the same time, spotted a whale off of some point in Laguna ... but no clue what kind. We started out south of that point, but you just never know with these things. Oh well, it was still a really nice cruise along the coast :)

Sorry I'm making you homesick. I guess that's one of the differences with visiting Disneyland vs. WDW. With WDW, we often will make that the entire trip, but with DL...there's just so much in the area that it's hard not to go out and explore beyond the parks. I told DH I wouldn't mind living out there if things like taxes, cost of living, drought, and gas prices weren't issues.

@bettyrose you've got to check out this TR it's great and by a very nice person

Thanks @figmentfan423 :)

Dec 28th continued...

We had a 6:30pm reservation at Blue Bayou and it was getting close to 6pm. With DH's ankle still giving him issues, we decided to head there a little bit early so he could take a slower pace. Along the way, we saw HMH at night.

We get into the New Olreans Square area and it's nicely lit and festive feeling...

As we're standing there deciding what to do before checking in...I realize I'm next to a very special doorway.

Earlier in the day, we had seen an older woman (possibly mid to late 70s) being escorted by a DL guide from this area and she was clutching something bearing Club 33 logos. I'm guessing she had just dined there, but this would be the closest we're going to get.

I had overheard them telling people in front of me that they were not taking any walk ups and that due to volumes, they weren't letting people wait for water seats. So, I just checked in without any fanfare or requests. I was still feeling drained, so I decided to sit inside and wait with the buzzer while DH and the girls wandered off. 23829211589_4337973e1b_z.jpg

The buzzer goes off, I call out to them to come in and we're shown to our table.

OK, I know they said they weren't taking requests for waterfront tables (which may not have been totally true since I'd later hear someone passing saying it was worth the wait), but our table was about as far from the water as possible. We were literally on the last row of tables right by the doors leading in from the waiting area. It was also very chilly in there, which may or may not have had something to do with table location. We kept feeling a breeze coming from the entry to the waiting area, but I imagine it would have been chilly over near the water since I know from videos that you can see the load area for PotC from up there and that does have some outdoor exposure as well.

I'll tell ya right now that none of my pics really turned out, but for what it's worth, this is what I captured of Blue Bayou...

I think this may have been the best one I took...

23901378020_08eda69ecd_z.jpg

I did actually take some video in there just to illustrate how dark it is. I'll share it, but I'm annoying myself just listening to me. I mean, how many times do I say the word Bayou???

We sat for a while, but eventually they took our drink order. We waited a while longer for bread.

23568785674_a724387c07_z.jpg

The sourdough rolls were rock hard, but the other bread (supposedly sweet potato biscuits) was very tasty and wouldn't cause you to chip a tooth.

We had the hardest time ordering...a problem I expected. This was one of those meals that I had to do just to say we did it. I know some people say it's amazing while many others say it's the most overrated restaurant in all of Disney. I had perused the menu options on Allears several times before travel and never really saw anything that jumped out at me...so I knew it would be a game time decision. I was also a bit bothered that it didn't have appetizer options and that so little of the menu actually had traditonal NOLA food. Like I said, I knew this going in and I know they keep things more basic in the parks, but things like etouffee, red beans and rice, and crawfish au gratin are mainstream enough to me to be served in a park and mild enough to appeal to many people. But hey...what do I know?

The kid starter was a veggie crudite with ranch...

24170868216_c93afe80c3_z.jpg

DH and I each had a cup of gumbo...

23829147409_19c987013d_z.jpg

The gumbo at least had decent flavor. Not the best I've ever had, but nobody burned the roux either, so it had a nice richness to it.

For entrees, DH had the salmon...

No, I didn't have a mint julep because I don't see the point if there's no alcohol. It's just not a fave of mine, but the alcohol at least helps cut the sweetness in a traditional one.

All in all, I think my food was the best of the group, but nothing was amazing nor did I have anything that would inspire me to make a return trip to Blue Bayou. I still think people should try it once since the atmosphere is cool, even if you're seated under the balcony section like we were. Plus, when it comes to iconic things like this...best to say you did it and form your own opinions. We also had some people seated near us, which made our seating issues an even bigger problem. I can handle being cold, but we had a family of 8 seated (split) in front of us and next to us. The parents sat at the table in front of us with an infant and preschool age daugther, and then the rest of their kids (4 boys) were at the table next to us. The kids really weren't awful or anything, but there was a lot of back and forth which sometimes made me feel like we were the table in the way. You know when you hear something like "mom, he's not sharing this" and you have already heard your own kids have their moments of "she's not giving me the crayons" to just not want to be in the middle of it with someone else's kids. If they weren't seated there halfway through our meal, I would have asked to swap tables with the parents so they could just be side by side. Ultimately, the meal felt a bit rushed, but I guess that helped us out some with relief from being family in the middle. In fact, it would help us out a lot more than just getting us out of an uncomfortable seating situation.

Finding a spot to watch Paint the Night and also see Disneyland Forever was our next big goal. Yes, it was only 7:30 at this point and fireworks weren't for another 2 hours and the second showing of Paint the Night wasn't for another 3.25 hours, but Paint the Night is drawing crowds hours and hours in advance. I was warned before this trip that people are staking out spots for the parade 3-5 hours ahead and that we'd likely miss out on curb space or standing room if we didn't do the same. We make our way back to Main Street and it's looking CROWDED!!!

23568743914_7b982172c2_z.jpg

I start going into a panic because everywhere I look on Main Street is already taken. I'm starting to get a bit worked up because I really hoped 3 hours in advance would be enough time to snag a curb spot for the second parade. Sure, there are other areas to watch it, but I also wanted to see the projections and inflatables on Main Street during Disneyland Forever and we wanted an easy exit after Paint the Night concluded. So, we walked towards the park entrance and spotted a few areas that were still unclaimed. I remember pulling out the blanket as I power walked to the spot. Yeah...I was told a blanket was a must (reasonable size). I spread out Sammie's turquoise Ariel throw blanket along the stretch of curb, take a seat, and look up at the clock and wonder how we're going to pass the time.

A few side notes before ending tonight's post.

1. It crossed my mind that I failed to share my issues on the AstroBlasters. No, I'm really not ashamed of my poor performance, but there was a reason behind some of it. We were in a constant spinning state for the first 3/4 of the ride. I remember thinking, "Wow, they make it really challenging at DL." No, Kendall was positioned in a way that was keeping us in a constant spin. By the time I shifted her and regained control of the vehicle, the ride was close to over. When you consider that, I think I did pretty well!

2. There were a handful of pics I knew I took on my phone that were lost somewhere in the shuffle. I just got a new phone and kind of forgot about them, but for whatever reason, they uploaded after my cellular service cut off from my old phone.

- I can tell from the pants that this is our DTD day. The girls were showing off their Vans.
24483503002_9c8a47cce3_z.jpg

- I think this was the same day and I think both pics were taken before we left Manhattan Beach. I'm pretty sure they were just showing off that they're Disney from head to toe (minus their pants).

- And this one should be obvious...in the movies before the start of Star Wars.
24296314880_767d0caf9f_z.jpg

There were a few others, but I think these were the only ones worth sharing.

3. I wanted to thank @ajrwdwgirl for reminding me about the scents. I completely forgot about the smell of gingerbread as you went through the ballroom. When she mentioned it and the gingerbread house of cards, it all clicked for me, but I know I was focused so much on Zero that I think I blocked it from memory. I really like Zero and I was just a teensie bit distracted!

Finally, while it's a bit shaky, I wanted to share this pic from my dad. They were staying at the Swan at WDW the last few nights (Swan and Dolphin offer excellent FL resident rates). This was part of the view from their room.

Coming up...pics to pass the time, RUDENESS!!!, protecting our place, autographs for Minnie, Disneyland Forever and Paint the Night

Dec 28th continued...

So, we're now sitting on the curb on main street and while we have a good deal of time before anything is scheduled to take place, I am beyond happy. You see, before this trip, we made a list of must do's. We ranked them and resorted them and such. And while we accomplished quite a bit for a day with such high crowds, one of my biggest MUSTS was seeing Paint the Night. I'll be honest, aside from seeing the projections and inflatables, I really didn't care that much about seeing Disneyland Forever....but PTN...I knew it was going to be big for me. Sure, Sammie and I LOVE Owl City's "When Can I See You Again" and have been known to dance and sing to it at the end of Wreck it Ralph + it's no secret that I'm an MSEP fan and there are clear tributes to it in PTN. Still, I remember watching live streaming video of the parade premiering at the 24-hour event back in May...a sleepover even going on in our house...and I was in tears watching this parade. I'd watch the vidoes on YouTube countless times after that and hope that the in person energy was even somewhere close to opening night crowds. So, needless to say...I'm giddy.

I did have to suppress some of that giddy glee and play defense. I don't like to be ugly in the parks, but I've seen too many stories of people trying to bump others out of their curb spots for PTN that I was on alert but also wanted to let people in to the free space around us. First a family came up, asked if they could squeeze in behind us but wa hoping I'd be OK if their son squashed in between me and the group to my left. Sure. They seemed nice enough and I'm always more receptive if it's a child. A group of four girls came in to claim the little bit of space left to our right. They positioned themselves 2 on the curb and 2 behind. This was also not their first time and they did a lot of my spot defending for me. Every time DH and the girls got up (bathroom breaks mainly), they spread out enough to help block the empty areas of my blanket. Thankfully, most times I could easily just tell the people trying to jump into our space that my husband just took our kids to the restroom and that those spots were taken.

So, while I'm sitting there...I do what I usually do and take pictures of the nearby decor...

I always like to try and spread the magic before parades and fireworks, if possible. So, one of the girls' gifts was a pack of 100 glow sticks. I sat them down on the curb and had them make a bunch to hand out. And this was them as they started trying to spread the magic.

24099630171_daee64c302_z.jpg

The only problem...they don't really know how to do it. I demonstrated a few times ... approaching people with kids and asking if they'd like some glow bracelets...and just wishing them a Merry Christmas. When I did it, it went over so well. But Kendall...she wanted to change it up and she told people she was "selling free glow bracelets." I kept tell her she's not selling anything...that you just ask people if they want one. She seemed to be grabbing the attention of a CM, and not in the good way, so I just shut it down. We did give several to the little boy sitting next to us. Hey- we tried!

Around this time, I got up and left DH and the girls on the blanket. I wanted to just move a bit and maybe take some pics.

23570071683_129fbb7890_z.jpg

As you can tell, I was standing in the middle of main street. Things had cleared out quite a bit in this area...enough for vendors with glow goodies and balloons to stake out spots in the middle of the street. So, when I went out there, I waited for an opening in "traffic" and picked a spot for pics in the center that was wide open. It's no different than anyone else taking pics of the castle from main street...and I was at least mindful of not stopping right in front of anyone or anything like that. Well, after I had been standing out there for a few minutes, I had turned to face the tree and was happily observing and taking pics in the center when someone dug their fingers into my left butt cheek and shoved me out of the way along with elbowing me. The strange thing is that it all happened kind of slowly. And as soon as I could turn, I see that it's an older woman on her scooter who decided I was in her way and did this. I do usually keep my cool at Disney, but this was no accident and I certainly did not jump out in front of her. So, I instinctively yelled "YOU BI%&H!!!!" She did nothing in response and I shouldn't have said it, but I got the attention of a man who was crossing the street right in front of her. I apologized to him, but I was shocked...still am. I try to give people in scooters a lot of room and I know it's not easy if you have to tour the park that way. But I certainly don't think that gives anyone the right to grab me, elbow me and shove me. I was only about 5-7 feet back from the nearest cart selling glow stuff in the middle of the street, so I guess she thought it was better to push me than the cart? Sorry...don't always like sharing the ugly moments, but it was so deliberate and shocked me so much that I thought I needed share. I also think when you read the next few parts, it makes it clear that while ugly things can happen, there is still so much good going on around you that there's no reason something like this has to ruin your experience.

I sat down, now feeling very unmagical, and was wondering if it was all worth it. It was about this point, a man came by - just another park guest - holding his made with the magic paint brush. Sammie and Kendall had out their wands and he was just so happy to come by and change the colors on their wands. The girls haven't mastered doing it, so I got to change his paintbrush. I don't think he spoke English, which added to the magic. I hate sounding cheesy, but awesome stuff like this transcends language barriers. It also made me start to forget about the rude woman.

Just after this, a small cluster of CMs came by and wanted to talk to us, although one girl in the group did all of the talking. I think she said she's normally a photopass photographer, but tonight she had the task of taking Minnie's autograph book around the park. She asked the girls to sign Minnie's book with whatever they liked...

She also wondered if Elsa was my fave after seeing my pants...well, until I uncovered the leg that had some yellow in the pattern. Nope, these are not Frozen pants. I'm a Donald Duck girl!

24170743396_81078f8106_z.jpg

She stayed to talk to us for a while about any number of things. She was defintely one of the CMs who stood out during this trip. In fact, (jumping ahead a tad) she came by to say good bye to us after fireworks. She had some other stuff she had to do outside of the park, but she and her fellow CMs just wanted to thank us and told us we were their fave guests of the day. We know they see tons of people and while I'm sure they had several faves, it definitely gives you that amazing Disney feeling when you interact with CMs who truly love what they do.

And finally, it's almost time for Disneyland Forever...

23568649444_b19fae03a1_z.jpg

"The voice" comes on and we know it's almost go time. I already was concerned that this spot would be better for PTN vs. fireworks, but there was nothing I could do. And in those last couple of minutes before the start of fireworks, people crowded in all around us. Now, I know it's the norm for fireworks...it's not our first time seeing Disney fireworks. Still, something about the height at which they set them off in DL in correlation with th size of the castle would make it very hard for the kids to see a lot. Sammie didn't mind so much and was OK with the the higher ones she could see as well as the projections and such, but Kendall was really bothered. I tried repositioning her a little farther into the street, but everyone around was just too tall. She's too heavy to pick up, so that wasn't an option. I ended up having her stand on the curb so she was elevated a bit, but she was ticked off. I still took a lot of pics, but not in love with any of them...but I'll share some.

So, let's talk about this...

Inflatables and projections...these are cool...VERY COOL! The buildings on WDW's MSUSA are taller and the inflatables might not be a good option, but the projections would totally work if WDW wanted something like this. And they could even do what DL does and have projections in different areas so that maybe people will want to try watching from BOG or something like that. That being said...the Nemo and Little Mermaid portions are the coolest for these effects IMO.

Fireworks themselves...pretty, but again...I think there's some truth to DL not being able to use the same kinds as WDW due to Anaheim ordinances. I will say the coolest part is in the Lion King section. If you haven't seen it...the fireworks in question (at the start of this portion) are similar to the fan pattern you see at the end of Wishes Go the Distance section....BUT in DL Forever, it's done to that very beginning portion of Circle of Life. In both cases, they are to symbolize the sun....but with DL forever...you also have projections going with the sunrise on main street. It's cool...very cool. But beyond that, they were fireworks.

Things that fly...in WDW, there's Tink who basically ziplines from the castle. In DL, they also have Tink, but the way it's structured...she looks more like she's flying around the castle. This particular show also has Nemo come out and fly in a similar way.

Other special touches...During the Frozen Let it Go portion it snows. Yes, it's that snoap stuff, but for whatever reason...it really got me choked up. We've already established that I'm not a Frozen super fan (even though I don't hate it), but something about the snow, and the song and the moment...and I was in tears.

Music...OK, I'm about to combo music geek out and go diva on you all at once. For those that don't know, in addition to working and being a mom and a crazy Disney lady...I sing. I started college as a voice performance major and even sang with our city's symphony for several years. So, music is REALLY important. Unlike Wishes, which gets me 5 or 6 times before the finale, this DF's music doesn't do this for me. I hoped it would be different in person, but nope. The only part that had a chance was the end...in fact, that finald chord. When I first saw DL forever during the 24 hour livestream, I thought maybe it was just bad audio due to all of the people watching...but it felt like that last chord was missing the high notes. When I saw better videos go up on YouTube, I thought I might hear something better...but if the high notes are there...they are really faint. Now, they also used this music to debut the changes being made to Soarin' during D23. There are live performers on stages and when they get to the end of the music...high notes...loud and clear. And it produced chills and tears all at once. So, I'm pretty sure the DL Forever soundtrack has them too, but they just failed to amplify them during sound editing. I've attached vids of both and hopefully you can hear what I mean and see how big of a difference it could make, at least for some like me. Not saying the highest tones should drown out the others, but they should be clearly audible.

D23 Soarin'

Disneyland Forever

(you can also see the mouse ear fireworks I photographed the previous night launch at the beginning of the video + you'll hear the kiss goodnight music they play after the fireworks at the end)

OK- I'll step down from my musical soap box. Please don't get me wrong...it's a nice show, but I felt like it could be so much more.

One last thing...the sparkly blue lights they use on the castle on and off during the fireworks are so pretty. I just wish they utilized them a bit more at night...like the dreamlights in WDW.

We did like how they kept the spotlights after the fireworks...

23567981744_82ffb8f32b_z.jpg

The ladies sitting next to us warned us to sit down as soon as the fireworks ended or people might try and step in onto our blanket. Kendall was standing in one of the spots so we were partially good and I kept one foot on the curb for my spot at all times, but I recall Sammie and DH having to reclaim their spots. It was nothing ugly...just wound up sitting on someone's feet who was standing on their part of our blanket. It's a small blanket...we were squashed hip to hip...so it's not like they can claim we were taking up too much space. Oh well. What's funny...the family who asked earlier to have their son sit next to me decide to skip Paint the Night. They were really sweet and funny too...Minnie loving people. They thanked us before going and we'd even see them a couple of times over the next couple of days.

So, we still have about an hour until PTN, and we're clearly going a bit crazy from living in curb land...

23569346193_35a792a933_z.jpg

I know I took this pic because they were starting to prep everyone for PTN, but I have no idea what I was actually photographing.

24088103232_46bcb64684_z.jpg

They had a few CMs going up and down mainstreet with a PTN sign in case we wanted to take pics with it...they had other CMs prepping everyone that in x # of minutes, they'd be telling everyone on the curb to sit and stay seated + that anyone in the rope behind those right on the curb must stand and stay standing. It's also a MUCH narrower space than you get on MSUSA in WDW, so if you weren't in curb row 1 or standing row 2, that was it. No PTN in this area for you.

OK...so I'm now getting really excited, but I'm wondering if it's going to be as amazing in person. I mean, part of the greatness of the livestreaming events and videos I'd seen was that those were opening night crowds. Of course people are pumped on opening night, but months later? I remember in 2010, back when MSEP had returned to MK, and while opening night crowds in the YouTube vids sounded so pumped, when we saw it in December...the crowd was more like, yeah...it's a parade. And then it happened...

The CM came back and gave us instructions to sit or stand based on our location, and then he started getting the crowd pumped up. There was some chanting and clapping and then all of a sudden...he stopped...turned towards the huge Disneyland Christmas tree...gestured to the tree...and all of the lights went out! And the street erupted in cheers! And of course, the intro to PTN started!!!!!!!

Now, I'm going to share my pics...and there are a lot...some pretty decent IMO, but in case you haven't seen this parade...it's worth seeing the video. I adore MSEP and was wondering how I'd really feel about PTN in person since it definitely pays tribute to it in spots...from the synth voice to start and bits of Baroque Hoedown blended in to the score.

In the beginning of the video below, they pan across the street and you can see the clock that's been showing up in all of my pics...just to give you some perspective on where I'm sitting. The only other big difference is that the 2nd parade runs in the other direction. As I was told, PTN 'lives' down by IASW, so the first parade comes from that direction and then the second parade starts from the main street area and heads back to IASW. So, the parade was going in the other direction for us.

I can tell you, as soon as the synth voice comes on...I'm getting choked up...as soon as I can hear "When Can I See you Again" starting - the tears are streaming down my face...and as soon as the singing starts I realize Sammie is singing and sort of dancing in her spot and we start singing and dancing along together. No more tears! And it's cool becasue everyone on both sides of the street seems to be having similar reactions. It's like everyone was in awe, but also wanting to dance and cheer and sing at the same time. I guess this is why people on the curb are told to stay seated. LOL What's also nice, that you should be able to tell from the video, is that it's timed so you don't have very much lag time from when your section of the route goes dark/music starts to when the parade is in your area. MSEP has some painfully long lags before it gets to you, but this...it was just like the video...I looked up and the fiber fairies and Tink were approaching just as the vocals started. I'm going to give some notes with some pics, but I'll hold the rest of my comments until the end of my pics.
