It’s been 14 years since Tomorrowland has gotten any real additions so why do we keep feeding into rumors of an updated land?

We all are aware of the sad state of Tomorrowland and the basically non existent need to update the land. Throughout Tomorrowland’s history, it has gotten updated about every ten years or so but not anymore. Here is a history of updates to the land along with my reasoning as to why I don’t see much reason to get out hopes up on any announcements of real change.

In addition to the land getting some update in 1959 and throughout the early 60’s, it was completely updated in 1967. In the mid to late 70’s, Space Mountain, Starcade, Space Place restaurant, an updated PeopleMover, America Sings and Mission to Mars were all introduced.

In the mid to late 80’s, Captain EO, Star Tours, Circle-Vision added Wonders of China and American Journey, a new Monorail debuted, Star Traders store were all introduced. The Subs and PeopleMover were both repainted as well. In 1998, the land got a somewhat complete refresh along with a new Autopia in 2000.

The damage done to the land in 1998 was touched upon in the mid 2000’s with the additions and a refresh to the land. This included a new Space Mountain, Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, a new Monorail, Tomorrowland Terrace got a renovated stage with Jedi training show, a new store under the PeopleMover station was created and the land was completely repainted.

We now arrive at the last 14 years of Tomorrowland, the only real addition has been Star Tours: The Adventures continue. This was an addition in 2011 that had been in talks for a long time and I think Disney only really did it so they could have a huge announcement for Disneyland during the parks panel at the very first D23 Expo event. Other things that have been added were purely for specific reasons. In 2015, Season of the Force’s Star Wars Launch Bay and Hyperspace Mountain were only added to promote the new Star Wars film that was debuting the same year. The Autopia was also remodeled in 2016 but only because Disney had ended their sponsorship with Chevron and Honda was fitting the bill for the renovation of the ride.

Disney did begin to clean up and renovate the entrance to Tomorrowland, only to give up on it later. Is there really any hope that the land will get updated? There’s no real motivation to even add a couple of new additions to the land like they have regularly have done in the past.

IMO, I really don’t see anything happening within the next 10 years or more. Regardless of the land’s current state due to the PeopleMover tracks and all these rumors that keep popping up suggesting that we will get some kind of announcement, I don’t think Disney cares at all about it because they seem pretty comfortable with the way the park is operating currently. I think Disney management’s current justification of this is as follows: Why fix something that’s clearly not possible to fix unless we close the land entirely. There are still rides, people are still flooding the land, so why fix it when it’s not truly broken. And furthermore, why add any new rides or attractions today because it may be a short term investment if at some point, future Disney management will change their mind.

And there lies the problem, if the future keeps getting pushed back and back and back because you think someone else will find fixing the land to be a priority then the future will never come.

May I also remind us (again) that the following theaters, attractions, and large buildings and interior spaces have all been sitting empty and abandoned for years now? In no particular order;
  • Carousel Theater/Innoventions (except for the windowless time share lounge upstairs with free soda pop)
  • Tomorrowland 3D Theater
  • Starcade

We do it because it's fun to speculate and it doesn't hurt anything to rumor monger about something so inconsequential.

I eagerly look forward to any and all 2025 PeopleMover rumors. I will read and share them ad nauseum.
I see you’re point and I understand but when rumors are never fulfilled like they haven’t been for the last 25 years (yes it’s been 25 years since the PeopleMover track has not been used), it begins to take a toll on many park fans and instead of fun rumor mill roundup time, it’s utter disappointment when it doesn’t come to fruition, especially when the Expo comes around. The PeopleMover track is the killer of a new Tomorrowland because you can’t do anything without it as well as the buildings it travels through all gone and to hear rumors for 25 years of something possibly happening, it’s rough. I know many on this forum see the upside in rumors when it comes to a new Tomorrowland but for me, I just don’t because when it comes to us vs. that rumor, the rumor is 25-0.

Why? Because eventually it will be done, its not a matter of if, its a matter of when. So why wouldn't we discuss it whenever there is rumors abound about a potential overhaul of the land.

How long has the rumor about Disco Yeti being fixed been out there and discussed? That has almost no chance of happening and yet it continues to be discussed to this day. At least with DL TL that is 100% going to happen eventually.

Besides Joe Rhode’s wishful thinking of the animatronic being fixed, rumors of a new working Yeti is at this point are just a joke brought on unnecessarily and has been no more then a funny meme for Disney park fans for years.

Yes but this is whole land vs an effect on a ride. Besides Joe Rhode’s wishful thinking of the animatronic being fixed, rumors of a new working Yeti is at this point just a joke brought on unnecessarily and has been no more then a funny meme for Disney park fans for years.
The point being is its still being discussed today many many many many years later whenever a new rumor comes around or a new comment from Rhode happens. If it was such a joke then no one would even give it a second thought and just ignore it, but no its discussed for many pages on here and other fan forums because that is what Disney Parks fans do. Call it being glutton for punishment if you will.

As for DL TL, if you don't want to participate in the discussion on the next latest rumors when they happen due to not wanting to be disappointed again, then don't as only you can make that choice. But that isn't going to prevent others from discussing them in the future for many pages.

I don't think these are people feeding into rumors necessarily. I do believe in 2019 Walt Disney Imagineering was considering a demolition of Tomorrowland, and we even have some proof from Episode 4 of the Imagineering Story, with Joe Rhode looking at a scaled down version of Tomorrowland and removing the Launch Bay building and re-analyzing the space it left. Bob Iger even mentioned once how the Imagineers were looking at different ideas and concepts for Tomorrowland's future and to be on the lookout for more Tomorrowland action in the near future.

So yeah, no wonder why people have been discussing this, even if the rumors aren't becoming confirmed announcements at D23. In my own unprofessional opinion, I think right now why nothing has been announced is because Disney knows they need to get this right. A renovation of Tomorrowland isn't worth a cheap re-skin because Tomorrowland would be back in the same problem in a few short years we currently are in now. The land is outdated, there's underutilized buildings, some of which are in terrible condition, the PeopleMover tracks continue to rot away, and so many more problems.

The only way to fix the land is to demolish it and start from the ground up again. Normally, this isn't the case, but the PeopleMover tracks are so intertwined with the buildings. If they were to put in a New PeopleMover, they cannot do so without destroying the buildings that house the remaining Rocket Rods tracks today. And frankly as dumb as some of the leadership is within the company, they know there is zero chance a successful New Tomorrowland comes without bringing back the PeopleMover. Especially in a locals park. And to do so, you have to demolish Tomorrowland and start with a clean slate, which I think most people would be okay with.

This is why Disney hasn't done anything, yet. In 2019, a total demolition of the land was rumored by multiple sources, but obviously it was never announced at D23 that year, perhaps due to the lackluster response that Galaxy's Edge had gotten. Then Covid hit, and perhaps killed all the momentum going forward. Joe Rhode, the rumored leader for New Tomorrowland, retired, too. WDI has probably had to start over due to all of these setbacks. And now, we are here. And maybe we have reasons to be optimistic.

I'm still confident some announcement is coming sooner rather than later the next couple of years. If we don't hear an official announcement this year of Autopia actually going electric by 2026, then my guess is as good as a Tomorrowland renovation happening sooner rather than later, perhaps opening by the 75th anniversary of Disneyland. Of course, maybe I'm too optimistic here, but it never hurts to speculate.

The important thing is that we can say confidently Imagineering is working on it, and at least is thinking about it.

Will no one mention the addition (and removal of) the New House of the Digital Picture Frames Future? 🤣

Brickey is correct to call it Sorrowland.

This is further speculation, but I don't think Disney wants to move forward with a New Tomorrowland until they figure out what exactly they are doing with Fantasyland. I believe this is another instance of Imagineering trying to figure out what exactly will replace the old Motor Boat Cruise area and beyond. It might have been two and a half years ago, but that tweet by Scott Trowbridge had to have been hinting at future plans for that area.
