Hey guys. This is my first post, but I come here almost everyday. I was there too for opening day on the 15th. Me and the family first got four Fastpasses and then me and my dad fell in line at the gift shop (at 10 am) for what we thought was a line to buy an M:S litho as well as get the artist's autograph. It wasn't. The line turned out to be for the commemorative opening day pin. Two cast members came by and slapped a white wristband on us with green happy faces all over them. They told us each person with a band is only entitled to two pins. My Pops and I thought, "Oh what the heck," so we stayed in line and finally got in after 2 hours. We got two M:S pins (It's square in shape with Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy w/a space shuttle blasting off as well as the ride name and opening day 2003) and limited edition Mickey and Minnie beanie thingies in their orange ISTC garb. I counted and only one man bought that expensive as heck litho (unframed) and got it signed by the artist. That artist dude was pretty bored though cause practically everyone who asked about the price of the litho immediately turned away in shock. There was no line for the lithos btw. You just had to go up to the table and purchase it. Hey, Patrick....I'm pretty familiar with how you look like, but I didn't see you there:) So sorry about the all out M:S puke fest.

Anywho, me, my dad and my sis went back for the ride @ 1:30. Saw the news cameras too as well as Mickey and Goofy. We got fuge Gold, group 3. I was disappointed cause people here have said it was less intense. We were so close to getting fuge Blue. The ride was awesome, but I was kinda disappointed that I didn't really feel weightless after blastoff. My sis and my dad didn't feel much of it either. It was a great ride though and it was intense! I was Commander. Btw, when we first entered the pods, my dad had this huge pocket full of change. Think of my dad as an Ozzy without the slurred speach;) Anyway, I saw him take handfuls of coins and just throw them into the storage compartments so that in his words, "So they won't float up into space." When the ride was over and everyone was collecting their stuff, we see my dad frantically grabbing the change he had strewn all around. The cast member told him to hurry cause others were in line. It took about 2 mins. for him to gather all his change. Then the cast member turns around and tells the people waiting, "Sorry. You have to wait for this guy. He's picking up his change." Soooooooo embarrassing. Me and my dad were pretty dizzy after the ride and we proceeded to bump into things. My sis was a little dizzy, but fine. The dizziness went away after 4 mins.

I went with my sis on Saturday to ride M:S again. How ironic. We got fuge Gold again. We got group number 3 again. Once again, I was Commander. I was kinda angry at this point. I had my sis switch with me so that she was the Pilot again and I got Navigator. Didn't feel weightless this time either. Are all the fuges really equal? Am I not really supposed to feel weightless? Getting off the ride, we saw a CM in the hall with a lady sitting keeping her head down. Two Fire Rescue guys came in to tend to her.

On a final note, we picked up the M:S ad pamphlet from the Polynesian and today after arriving in Miami yesterday, I saw two huge billboards with the same ad of the person screaming (freaks me out) as I was driving to my school (The U).

Yea, welcome to the boards, and thank you for not starting another whole thread on it. As for the weightlessness issue, its not your butt that gets lifted off the seat, but its your back. They kinda ruined that on the ride, cause after liftoff, you tilt forward, and when your back comes off the seat, it looks like your just tilting forward then being pushed out of your seat. Imo, the greatest sensation of weightlessness I feel on the ride, is right after the Engineer is told to extend the wings for gliding, and you kinda bounce down. If you keep your eyes on the screen, you do get the tickle in your stomach:lol: (thats one thing TOT has beaten MS at)

Does anyone know if Disney even considered the inclusion of Emergency Sickness Bags on M:S?

Welcome to WDWMAGIC! Hope you have a great time on MS, and I hope we can hear your comments when you get back! :)

I have not heard of any discussion at all about providing sickness bags. I believe that WDI are relatively happy with the degree of comfort they have with the ride system, and sickness is not a problem for the vast majority of guests. Remember that people get sick on everything from the teacups to Tower of Terror at WDW, so having a few people get sick on MS is all par for the course of operating an attraction. Having said all that, I see no reason why they could not be provided, there is certainly space inside the capsules to do that.

Yes all the ride bays have the exact same ride profile and performance levels.

There is a simulation of weightlessness, when coming from the high G parts of the profile to the low G parts. It is not true weightlesness (as that is very hard to achive here on Earth). It is a pretty good effect in my opinion, but may not live up to some peoples expectations if they are expecting to be floating around the cabin.

Oh Steve.... thanks for that mental image I did not need! ;)

I'll be happy to share. I should say that your site has been a frequent stop as you tracked the development of M:S. Yours certainly lead the pack in providing information.

I first learned of M:S when I was contacted by Disney in 2001 to help research part of the [planned] post-show. From what I can tell, the section I worked on did not make it into the final attraction.

I could see them as a free souvenir. The bags could say "I survived a trip to Mars and back on M:S!" (obviously, if you didn't "survive" you'd be sans-bag :animwink: ).

Well, I don't think I would speaking out of turn if I said that initially Disney had planned a post-show focused more on telling the history of space flight. Think less arcade and more mini-museum. Based on the descriptions I heard from various people connected with Disney, it would have been similar to the NASA-themed display at Disneyland in Tomorrowland (which I also had a small hand in).

They wrote with some very, very specific questions about which animals had flown in space. These weren't your typical suspects, such as the dog Laika or chimps Ham and Enos, but some really exotic creatures. Though I never knew what specifically they were planning, I had this mental image of an animatronic menagerie of space-flown animals. :)

Well, you could never achieve true zero-g w/ a ride system like the centrifuges, where you don't change elevation at all. NASA, as we know from the preshow, simulates it be either sending planes into nosedives or dropping astronauts in water tanks...without either changing elevation or dropping guests in water, they couldn't really do anything...it's still a kewl effect, I think, but nothing like the LOI and the MOI.:)

Hey ISTCrew20, thanks for the report. I rode M:S this weekend, too, on Sunday. It was great fun. I didn't get sick, although I was a little scared. Those take-off type rides (like RNR) have a similar effect on me. I think it is just as much mental, though, as it is actually physically sickening for me. I automatically tense-up out of fear right before take-off on those rides and it doesn't stop until the "release" at the end of acceleration. It is a great rush, but I could see how people could get sick.

My only concern about your post, was that you said continually that you were "mad," as opposed to "grossed-out" or "frustrated." I mean, this is a new experience for most people, and rides give warnings all the time yet do not make people sick. So, since he could not have reasonably been assumed to have gotten sick ON PURPOSE, then how could you be "mad" at him?

Anyway, I am sorry it happened. I'm glad I didn't know about it before my ride, as I might have been scared to go... :animwink:

One more thing for others (maybe the CM online) to answer: have many people gotten sick? And what do the cast members do? (Shut off the fuge, clean it up right then, or what? And do you have that drying stuff ready to pour on it for easy cleanup? Do you give guests a new shirt to wear home, etc.????) Just wondered. (Sorry if it was too gross. :hurl: :animwink: )

P.S.: Hey, collectspace: Where in Virginia are you from? And how did you get involved with helping design the NASA stuff?

Wow....I still have a dated thread that has survived four days:p ...Um, your comment is ridiculous, I mean, if I get VOMITED on, especially by someone else, am I not allowed to be mad? I wasnt really mad at him, (even though he was the cause), but I was just mad I had to walk around for two more hours like that. I wasnt going to come off, with a smile on my face, just a tad disapointed, cause I got someone else's junk all on me

I live in Arlington, VA, near DC, though its a relatively recent move.

I've crossed paths with Disney both when I worked at the headquarters of the National Space Society and while as a producer at SPACE.com. It was while I was at SPACE that the M:S request was received.

For the past couple of years I have been a director with Space Adventures, who you may know as the company that launched the world's first space tourists to the International Space Station. Its with SA that I was able to travel to Russia and train in zero-G as well as participate in some of the other cosmonaut activities.

(That's probably more than you'd like to know, but I'm always happy to share my passion for space with others.)

I agree with you, I dont think I could come off a ride, with puke on me... being all happy. I would have been mad also. :dazzle:

I dont really like puke all that much :hurl:

No, that was great. It helps me understand where you were coming from, and it helps lend credibility to your comments here.

I have two college friends who worked for NASA (one on payroll at Goddard and the other as a Ford Aerospace contractor in the DC area also), and I have always had an interest in this.

As for the other subject ( :hurl: ), I was just saying that, while it is gross and terrible to be puked on (even thinking about it is gross), I didn't think that it made sense to get literally mad at someone for something like that, which they can't usually help. But your response cleared up that you were not really mad at him. You generally only can get mad if the person had a choice in the matter. I understand now, but I think you would have been better off using a different word (like frustrated or grossed out and totally irritated). Anyhoo... no biggie.

Thanks for the welcomes, guys! Well, I'm not very technologically savy, but I guess reading of all the hype before of how guests would feel a few seconds of weightlessness stuck in my head. I didn't know that centrifuges didn't allow for true weightlessness. I guess the image of Tom Hanks in the vomit comet in Apollo 13 just automatically popped into my head, lol (See......vomit comet...centrifuges.....they're not the same.....very technologically unsavy!). Great ride nonetheless. I've never felt g-forces like those before. Feels like a sumo wrestler sitting on your face (Not that I would know:)

:) You are highly qualified for riding Mission Space then! LOL. It will probably be all routine for you! ;) Its going to be great to hear your comments.

He did have a choice. Based on the fact that Patrick could tell the man had just eaten before riding (he could tell what the man had eaten by the fact that he was wearing it after the ride), the man should have known better than to ride this attraction after eating. Despite countless warnings, he decided to ride anyway. I think I would be mad at someone for doing that--no one in their right mind would ride Mission: SPACE for the first time right after eating. He was just asking for trouble.

Right...plus I told him it spins, but NOOOO.... dont listen to the guy who has been on it....Anyway guys, it was just a little incident, and it doesnt need to be argued over. It seems everything I post lately has been the subject of ridicule and the like. Let me get this out right now, if you dont like me, thats your own fault, cause your losing out on not knowing a cool person, but I just dont know why you have to PM me and post it here...If you dont like me, please keep your coments to yourself:) ...Btw, I think this post has had its share of fame, and the next update should be up on saturday night, as Im planning on that being my next time over there (with a girl that is interested in me I might add:animwink: )
