Coasterguy, i'm hoping you hold in all this negativity during your M:S shifts and keep it away from paying guests. Nevertheless, this negativity isn't really welcome on these boards, imo.

I don't think whatever ISTCrew20 told those folks about the ride prevented them from making the decision that this may not be the ride for them.

Given this ride's relative intensity from what i've read(over and over) on these boards, i'd guess that there are a few permanent signs displayed leading up to the queue and throughout the queue to weed out those who are totally oblivious to the ride experience and may be prone to motion sickness.

That dad, the :hurl:-er, wasn't kidnapped onto the ride by ISTCrew20. ISTCrew20 said he was paired with those 3 once it got to that point.

It sounds like you have a decent amount of angst towards ISTCrew20, and i don't think a public message board is the best place to hash it out.
:D

:D

I dont think that was the point he was making.

The final flight briefing contains important information about looking straight ahead, not looking to the left and right etc. If you were to miss those details, the side effects are as described above by ISTCrew's experience. The moral of the story there is not to distract anyone during that briefing so that they hear every word and follow the directions exactly.

He isnt being negative, he is just presenting some reasons for why things happen.

Guest Relations are getting people complaining this attraction is making them sick, so I would imagine that the CMs are becomming aware of that fact, and trying to point out to people why this happens. When stories of people becomming sick appear online, it is only fair for any CMs to mention what may have happened to contribute to the situation, and in this case, it seems that the riders might have missed some important information about looking ahead and not moving their heads.

I am sure CoasterGuy doesnt have anything against ISTCREW, he is just providing some valuable information which is appreciated here (just like ISTCREWs info is).

Your story is amusing, but tell the whole story!! There is always a flip side to every coin and I know that other side in this case. I was there. Hopefully this is a lesson for you to not talk to the guests while the preflight breifing is on. You can't deny that you were distracting the others. We both know what really happened, but it was convenient to leave those vital details out. You talked to the guests, distracted them from the safety spiel, and got a little gift fom them in return. Ironic coming from the guy who knows so much about the ride. Just thought I should help complete your story.

Fair enough, I was talking to them. Im trying to remember who it was that came around and told us to stop  ...Anyway, I shouldnt have been talking to them, but, they kept asking me what it was, is it scary ect...And they did keep there head back, and looking straight, cause that was one thing that I told them to make sure to do, so they had to freak over it. Who ever caused it, whatever the guy ate, it was gross either way. If that was you who asked if it was me on the way out, Yep, thats me, but I didnt wanna talk cause I was tad bit mad:lol:

Walt Disney World guests talking during a preshow so that you cannot even hear what is going on...hmmm...isn't that the case on every preshow on Disney property? I can't even hear the Tower of Terror or Haunted Mansion ones anymore. Does that make it right? No. But, it'll never end, just the same. If this guy ate right before going on Mission: SPACE, there probably was nothing a preshow video could have prevented. He should not have ridden after eating. Preshow or no preshow, there will always be guests puking on this ride, just like Dumbo or Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, and if this guy wasn't willing to listen to the warning from the outside set-up at the entrance, the warning sign at the entrance, the warnings from Cast Members, the warnings over the sound system every couple minutes while guests are in the queue, the visuals in Mission Control, and whatever parts of the preshows he could actually hear, then I'm not sure anything Patrick could have done would have changed anything. The guy simply should not have ridden--people make mistakes, and that will be an even bigger factor on this ride because unlike RnR, a "roller coaster", people don't really know what Mission: SPACE is until they ride it--Disney needs to find a way to really explain it in their commercials, which will be tough in any 30-second spot. Most guests still have no idea what to expect when they enter Planetary Plaza. Maybe if they didn't consider the top G-forces or top speed proprietary, and actually shared them w/ guests (at least the top G-Forces), people would get a better idea of what condition they need to be in before boarding. Like, on RnR, Disney explicitely tells us we will be launched from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, so guests know it will be intense, and they probably shouldn't eat at Rosie's before getting in the RnRn queue. These are probably issues that Disney's huge advertising campaign for Mission SPACE will fix, or at least greatly diminish. I must ask, did Disney every REALLY expect after cramming 40 people into those claustrophobic ready rooms (definitely claustrophobic when they are full...), there would be complete silence? I think they have realized that is not going to be the case, so all of the warnings from that video are now played over the main sound system in the queue, and presented at the entryway. It's those warnings in the 2nd preshow that guests only see once, and from what I have heard, Patrick made completely sure they knew to keep their heads against the headrests and to stare directly forward.

If those guests were asking Patrick how the ride was, you didn't expect him to ignore them, did you?

Those preshows you mention are not giving critical safety information. While its annoying to have the ToT audio drowndd out by talking, it isnt going to affect guest comfort in the attraction. The second briefing in Mission Space is directly affecting comfort, so it is very important that everyone hears that. I think WDI did a good job of separating out the guests into the small groups prior to the second briefing. With only 4 guests per briefing, there should be no problem with people talking over the audio.

If guests are told that its a multi-armed centrifuge that delivers sustained 2.5G, with rotatation of 32mph, can you really see that making much sense to the majority? I dont think its a case of Disney withholding information, I think its a case that most people are just not going to understand how those details will actually feel in the ride.

*sigh*...Here we go again.....Yes Steve, the preshow does offer one line of safety instructions, but it is also said by a CM before the preshow starts, and over the intercom while in the queue. Besides, the people could barely understand me, let alone the horrible accent lady....

~shivers~ AHHHHH!! Keep her away! "Remember the team number you're standing on" AHHHHHH!!!! She creeps me out!

Steve, I know there is a difference in the preshows, I was just pointing out that guests will never stop talking during preshows--I see what you mean about the 2nd preshow, with smaller groups. However, it wasn't as though Patrick was talking about random stuff like what the other guy ate for lunch--he was reiterating that they need to keep their heads back and look forward.

That preshow lady is so scary...makes me shiver just thinking about her! "Remember the team number..." Ahhhhh!

Ahhhhhh! Stop it! She's looking at me! "Capshule"...scary, man...scary. Gary is great, but she makes me shiver. Even the way she says "simulators, spinning" in the first preshow with no break between the two. Everything she says is awkward with a forced accent that I'm sure makes it hard for some first time riders to understand what she is saying.

You're not the only one who made fun of her. You should have seen me with my friends. We would do a huge song a dance when they announced: "HYERPSLEEP ACTIVATED". It was fun.

I'm new to this board, so excuse me if this is too off-topic, but that said...

Does anyone know if Disney even considered the inclusion of Emergency Sickness Bags on M:S?

I've participated in real space training (both the affectionally titled "Vomit Comet" parabolic zero-g flight and on training centrifuge) and on both I was either given or advised to bring a bag. It wasn't as if they were expecting me to be sick but just in case. It makes everyone else's enjoyment of the experience that much better when your unpleasantness is contained.

It seems Disney could incorporate this idea in a lighthearted manner that wouldn't be offensive to guests. Heck, the airline they rode to come to WDW has the bags at every seat...

I am going to Epcot this weekend to compare M:S with the real thing, in part to review it for our site. From what I have read here, it sounds quite good.

(BTW, I'll pass along a secret tip that's shared among the astronauts. If you are the type that are concerned about getting sick on M:S than carry a cherry (not lime, lemon, or pineapple) lifesaver with you on the ride (don't eat it during though, as that's a danger of choking). Immediately after getting off the ride, pop the cherry sucker in your mouth. Astronauts from the Apollo days onwards say that it does away with any feeling of nausea.)

Wierd.... but cool.

But I think the problem is that people would fear if they had sickness bags and get hyped up about what could happen. Also, a large pannel comes down infront of you, so it would be hard to place a sickness bag infront of you that wouldn't block out part of the ride.

Hey guys. This is my first post, but I come here almost everyday. I was there too for opening day on the 15th. Me and the family first got four Fastpasses and then me and my dad fell in line at the gift shop (at 10 am) for what we thought was a line to buy an M:S litho as well as get the artist's autograph. It wasn't. The line turned out to be for the commemorative opening day pin. Two cast members came by and slapped a white wristband on us with green happy faces all over them. They told us each person with a band is only entitled to two pins. My Pops and I thought, "Oh what the heck," so we stayed in line and finally got in after 2 hours. We got two M:S pins (It's square in shape with Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy w/a space shuttle blasting off as well as the ride name and opening day 2003) and limited edition Mickey and Minnie beanie thingies in their orange ISTC garb. I counted and only one man bought that expensive as heck litho (unframed) and got it signed by the artist. That artist dude was pretty bored though cause practically everyone who asked about the price of the litho immediately turned away in shock. There was no line for the lithos btw. You just had to go up to the table and purchase it. Hey, Patrick....I'm pretty familiar with how you look like, but I didn't see you there:) So sorry about the all out M:S puke fest.

Anywho, me, my dad and my sis went back for the ride @ 1:30. Saw the news cameras too as well as Mickey and Goofy. We got fuge Gold, group 3. I was disappointed cause people here have said it was less intense. We were so close to getting fuge Blue. The ride was awesome, but I was kinda disappointed that I didn't really feel weightless after blastoff. My sis and my dad didn't feel much of it either. It was a great ride though and it was intense! I was Commander. Btw, when we first entered the pods, my dad had this huge pocket full of change. Think of my dad as an Ozzy without the slurred speach;) Anyway, I saw him take handfuls of coins and just throw them into the storage compartments so that in his words, "So they won't float up into space." When the ride was over and everyone was collecting their stuff, we see my dad frantically grabbing the change he had strewn all around. The cast member told him to hurry cause others were in line. It took about 2 mins. for him to gather all his change. Then the cast member turns around and tells the people waiting, "Sorry. You have to wait for this guy. He's picking up his change." Soooooooo embarrassing. Me and my dad were pretty dizzy after the ride and we proceeded to bump into things. My sis was a little dizzy, but fine. The dizziness went away after 4 mins.

I went with my sis on Saturday to ride M:S again. How ironic. We got fuge Gold again. We got group number 3 again. Once again, I was Commander. I was kinda angry at this point. I had my sis switch with me so that she was the Pilot again and I got Navigator. Didn't feel weightless this time either. Are all the fuges really equal? Am I not really supposed to feel weightless? Getting off the ride, we saw a CM in the hall with a lady sitting keeping her head down. Two Fire Rescue guys came in to tend to her.

On a final note, we picked up the M:S ad pamphlet from the Polynesian and today after arriving in Miami yesterday, I saw two huge billboards with the same ad of the person screaming (freaks me out) as I was driving to my school (The U).

Hey ISTCrew.....I just got back and was there (Mission:Space) on the 16th. I appreciate your updates and your info help keep my fiance from getting sick. I warned her way before we rode what happened, to look forward, not close her eyes, and well it worked! She was a bit nervous in the briefing part and did not catch the entire briefing.

I love the effect on the ride where they tell you your job title and the light above your head shines down on you...what a great effect!

This ride is great!
