Island

I purchased a copy of "A Dream Called Walt Disney World", from 1981 and was noticing all the stuff that has changed since that video. One of which was some Island...I can't remember what it was called. But there was a boat that would take you to this Island where you could see certain birds and animals. I don't recall any such place, which leads me to conclude that this attraction must be long gone. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and what they did with it?

It was called Discovery Island and I guess ever since Animal Kingdom was built and opened a handful of years back, a new "Discovery Island" inside DAK was added.

The old "Discovery Island" you are talking about is just an abandoned island. There is more on this topic if you do a search.

Presently the old island is sitting in the middle of the Seven Seas Lagoon collectingd dust.

Is the seven seas lagoon the one right by the Magic Kingdom, that you cross on the ferry boat to get to the park?

nope thats not discovery island. discovery island is in between the contemporary, wilderness lodge, and fort wilderness. the nets for the animals are still up, but the paths there are overgrown and is mainly habited by snakes, occasionaly gators, and some birds. other than that the island is pointless now and is slowly being washed away due to the rise/lowering in the sea.

Hmm... This prompts two questions I've been considering for a year or so... In MN it's a common pasttime for teens and 20 somethings to explore the thousands of islands around. Usually beer or some form of a "smokable plant" is involved. Regardless...

1. Is there anything stopping someone from renting a boat and going on DI?

2. Is this enough to get a CM fired?

1. They specifically watch for that. I've heard of people sneaking on... but refer back to the first sentence. There really isn't much to see other than decaying cages and buildings.

2. Yes.

Yes, Seven Seas Lagoon is the large body of water directly south of the Magic Kingdom. Discovery Island, however, is located in what they call "Bay Lake." Which is east of Seven Seas Lagoon and accessible via a water bridge south of the Contemporary Resort.

Thanks. Interestingly, I noticed when looking in Biernbaum's Disney World book that "Discovery Island" is now the name of that part of the Animal Kingdom where the Tree of Life is located.
