Is This Still Used?

Maybe this has to do with the doves they used to release at the end of Beauty and the Beast since they would fly out to EPCOT after the show. Maybe they didn't want tem too far into the park...but they don't seem to work from what I've seen!

I would bet that the recording is more to keep the troublesome birds out (like the sea gulls and such). I had heard that the doves were trained to fly behind the castle to their area behind fantasyland (that is where their cages are). But, they stopped releasing them because I heard too many were getting eaten by hawks while en route to their "home".

So...anyone have a copy of the bird recording? Please? I need an owl and recording to scare away the birds here. I HATE birds! If I could, I'd go bird hunting. They sit on my car mirrors and poo down the side of my car. I just washed it yesterday and it's already so bad that I don't want to touch my car. They also constantly fly into our house's windows. Stupid birds.

I've heard it, its pretty annoying if you're trying to eat and relax outside of the Electric Umbrella. Probably the same reason those moving spirals are around that same area, to keep birds away. ?

Tell me about it! I ate there a few days ago and I managed to sit right under the speaker.

Hmmm...interesting. My source at Disney says they went to EPCOT and that they stopped releasing them because Disney was incurring too much costs due to the birds...ah...relieving themselves upon guests' clothing.

New Nests for WDW Pigeons
By Robert Johnson and Todd Pack

September 23, 2002

Disney World says it has found homes for the last of the roughly 200 pigeons it once released with a flourish during shows and weddings at the park.

It stopped releasing the birds in July after employees realized they had become targets for hawks that had taken up residency in the woodlands around its parks and resorts.

Disney got a few calls and e-mails from pigeon fanciers who wanted a feathered souvenir, but spokeswoman Rena Callahan said the birds are going to reputable organizations the company has dealt with before.

She said about half the birds have already been shipped and that the rest would be delivered to their new owners in October.

Well I can actually say I was attacked by a Very angry bird years ago while staying at what was Dixie Landings ( now Riverside ). Although they had signs warning that birds could be agressive...for what for I can't remember...I was minding my own buisness going walking on one of the main paths, when one decended on me and chased me damn near all the way to my room....pecking me in the head the whole way just about. I wasn't seriously injured or anything ( surprised yes, good thing I pack a lot of underwear on vacation:lol: ) But it definately got my attention....not to mention probably the highlight of day for my family. Because as we all know it's always funnier when it happens to somebody else!

The first time I heard the bird sound coming out of the bushes I thought "Now why in the world would Disney do that?" I mean it is not the most pleasesant sound. Guess now I know. I will get a recording of them next time I am there so you all can download it and enjoy the sounds of Epcot! Just as a side note if they actually worked, they should put about 500 of those in Frontierland. I have to dodge bird ________ everytime I walk thru there.

I am doing a paper on WDW, and in a WDW trivia book, I read the following...

A recording of a bird in distress is played (quietly) in Future World at Epcot, to keep other birds out of FW.

If this is still used, then WHY ISN'T THERE 5,000 of these recordings at MK? I have noticed that during bird season, the MK seems to be hit harder than any other park...?

I actually have a live recording of that sound that I made during a recent research trip. I'll try and locate it and post it in the Downloads section of my site for you.

I dont know about Disney but i can assure you that having lived 23 years of my life on air bases that they do use bird distress calls to disperse birds.

they also use longer grass, sudden noises, pyro etc. I would have thought however that to have it playing in one area constantly would diminish the effect.

Pigeons by the way are just flying rats, that can cover a greater area with their Richards.

I was eating w/ my family in Epcot two months ago & that stupid recording would not SHUT UP! It got really annoying. It sounds like a bird giving out a distress call, and then you hear a hawk screech. They played it every ten seconds. And it doesn't seem to work. The place is still overrun w/ birds.

About every half an hour by Pecos, those sounds play. Usually around 11-3 in the fall. Coming from Chicago, they sound almost like the same sounds and system that the Chicago Cubs put in place at Wrigley Field to keep birds out of there. The difference? It works at Wrigley!

There are so many really nice looking birds on disney property and then you have pigeons and gulls..... flying doody machines. really annoying machines.

I had noticed at Sea World that they had put little motorized propellers on top of all of the patio umbrellers. They turned slowly and the gulls and pigeons were nowhere near the eating areas. They were still around the show areas but we were able to eat in peace.
I don't know if they still have them.... I haven't been in years.
